California winter is here 1 2 3

Look at this... a little too early for this to be happening. Once we get into an el nino pattern and storms come from the Pacific, it should be more mild. We won't have any freezing temps from this, but it will be chilly! brrr. Hopefully this pattern will change soon!

California: Are We Next? 1 2

There are strong indicators of a major pattern shift starting in about a week. The good news is that significant rainfall may occur. The bad news is that it could be accompanied by an arctic airmass. A combination similar to what has happened in Florida & the South. I am not a weather drama queen waiting for something interesting to finally happen & this "heads up" could easily not pan out either. But who knows? Here are excerpts of discussions among AMS_LA chapter meteorologists [also take a look of Kevin Martin's UJEAS model - the impression is that something wet is about to happen & maybe something "cold" "The strong El Niño (similar to 1992) th…

Californian's, are you watering?

I was out out weeding over the weekend and noticed that most of my beds were bone dry for the first couple of inches, even under canopy and mulch. I last watered last weekend before the big freeze to make sure everything was hydrated and to raise the humidity and soil temperatures a bit. These cold, dry winds with dew points in the teens combined with sunny skies have sucked the moisture out of the ground. If you are not watering, you might want to check your soil. I have never had to water in February before.

I thought I'd start a temp thread again like we did last year. It seemed to work pretty good for comparing microclimates and keeping tabs on each other's garden woes. Friday, December 19th, 2008 This was right about my coldest night yet at my new place. 40.5F. even though a light breeze was blowing...brrrrrrrrrrr. That surprised me that I could get that cold even though there was wind. But there was no frost even at the bottom of the hill or on rooftops. I think the humidity was too high to let any more radiational cooling happen. My parents place in lemon Grove was 39F. How about you guys. Tonights gonna be a cold one because I think it's getting drier.

http://raleighwx.easternuswx.com/models/gf...nomalyNA216.gif This is a model outlook West Coast meteorologists are looking at. A strong high pressure system sets up over Alaska & descending winds usher in a very cold airmass over Nevada. This is the type of dynamics that can bring us a serious freeze [comes in the "back door" without the benefit of the Pacific ocean to warm the air mass like in 1990 & 2007]. This model is well over a week away & things can change considerably so it is too early to panic. Ten days out is considered a "marginal" forecast. Stay tuned

Is there a city in California that has ever stayed above 70 for a full year?..that has never dropped below that temp for 365. The Beach Boys eternal summer for real. Historically has that happened? in modern times?..This year we never went below 50. A mini record for us in the eastbay.Unofficial-just me saying that....

Looks like there's a big storm coming down off Alaska, though it might not make it far enough south to make it possible to skip watering again this weekend . . . Any thoughts? dave

Calling Jim from San An - syersj

Hey Jim: Since I pretty much consider you the native weatherman on TX , what's your outlook on this weekend? ??? I hear of a front coming in with lots of rain here in Houston. Wasn't liking the sound of it since my folks are coming in from Baton Rouge and we were going to hang by the pool and enjoy Easter. And not to mention I've pulled some palms out of protection and might need to do some shuffling. Is it going to be as bad as this last storm? Thanks, Michael

Hello everyone! Its been a long time since my last posts here and given that we now have more than 7 years of meteorological data from the area of Lindos in SE Rhodes in Greece, we can see some very interesting things according to the National Observatory of Athens fan aspirated meteorological station in Lindos. It appears that it is by far the warmest area annually in geographical Europe beating even the warmest areas of the Canaries islands (which are not located in Europe anyways). Below Lindos data the past 7 years that the station is operating. By achieving an amazing 21.89C mean annual temperature it beats even Tenerife South AP station in the Canari…

Can Florida Close

Accuweather Dude Joe Bastardi predicted at some early time (?)that Florida should enjoy(?) December because Winter was over after that in Florida. In Southeast Florida, it is difficult to complain. Particularly, after last Jan.2-12, we have experienced an outstanding January. We have had a few cool days with highs in the 60'sF.but lows only in the mid 40'sF.Primarily, this has been highs in the mid 70's with lows around 60 F.to upper 50'sF. This is perfect weather for those of us, who sweat from Feb. to Nov. That stated, in 1899 armeggedon hit Florida, Texas and the entire South on Feb.13-14.Will armeggedon hit again this year? Is Bastardi for real? Does anyone know the…

I am reading about the weather out West and see predictions of a somewhat fierce Santa Ana wind event with gusts up to 55 MPH. It seems to have a relationship with cold air advection and interaction with the warmer Pacific. My understanding was that the Santa Ana was always hot air.

Can This Be Global Warming!!!

The summer rains that have been missing, atleast where I live, have come at last. Not only have they come but they have come with the tropical Northernly winds. And Iam talking about lots of rain, not the sprinkle we often get from the south which is anything but tropical . This is what it used to be like years ago. And what makes it even better, its not thunderstorms that ofter bring damaging hail, fortunately I seem to miss out on all the damage, touch wood. We all like pictures so here is one outside my dinning room window. Mike

Can you say

My Grandad use to always say: August 15- September 15 = Eye of the Tiger time in South Florida. Ironically, the Big MoMo struck here in the early evening hours of Sunday September 16, 1928. We got two Cape Verde Blows on the screen as we speak. One silly model shows 90L plowing right through South Florida. Atleast one full month of riding the side of your chair stuff. Fasten your seat-belts!

Canopy is key
by tropicalb- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
well...it seems Dr. Darian was right. Start with a big canopy. After going through all the threads concerning the damage done during this freezing weather, one fact rings true: Palms located underneath canopy for the most part escaped major damage, while those left out in the open were decimated. (I can already hear the "duh's!!!, but how many people actually heed what they already know to be true and plant the canopy trees first?) Had I known that the 80+ year old Pepper tree at my Dad's house with it's thin leaves would have provided SO much protection over the last few nights, I would have drug all the plants over to that area a LOT sooner. I really didn't …

Cape Coral Florida Tornado
by Palmaceae- 10 replies

I posted this in the "Rain in Florida" thread but thought I would create a new post as we had some wild weather in the Cape yesterday. El Nino is showing it's presence here in Florida. Here is some drone footage of the damage in Cape Coral. I am about 8 miles from this location, Meg is close than I am. It was an EF-2 tornado and damaged 178 stuctures. There was only about a couple minute warning before the tornado hit this area. "The tornado had an estimated peak wind of 132 mph and a path length of 3.4 miles, the National Weather Service said. About 178 structures were damaged: One home was destroyed, 14 had major damage and 163 suffered minor damage, the Natio…

Currently, there is the potential for a couple storms to form over the next week. Hopefully, we can get a gentle, nice, and cooperative tropical storm to sit over the state for a few days.

Just today, thankfully, I’ve finally been able to get my hands on some fairly priced coconut sprouts online. I came across a certain company that has a small coconut plantation in Broward County FL, and to my surprise were giving 5” coconut sprouts for 5 dollars each, minimum purchase of two sprouts. The shipping was the only downside: 23$ to get them to the RGV! But nonetheless, I realized that I pretty much wasn’t going to find anything cheaper online. And a total of 33$ for two palm sprouts that aren’t very common here wasn’t the end of the world either. So now I’ve got two Gold Malayan cocos on the way! However, taking into consideration that these will be the first c…

Watching CBS Evening News tonight and really sorry to hear that a Polar Vortex is due to head down the Midwest real soon and into the south. They said they are expecting it to last several days before retreating back into Canada. Hope the heads up allows you to make plans. Yikes it's only early November.
