Recommendation on thermometers
by chad2468emr- 2 replies

Hi all, Hope this isn't too off-topic for this section, but it seems to be the most appropriate area. Does anyone have any recommendations for an outdoor thermometer setup that will allow me to record daily highs + lows from two different sensors easily that are accurate and under $50 total? I feel like that's a reasonable price point, but let me know if I'm wrong. I've had a hard time finding anything online that reviewers seem to consistently state has been observed to be accurate. You all understand more than most that 33 degrees vs 32 degrees makes a large difference even if just for 1 hour between 5:00 am - 6:00 am, and I need to know that my thermometer …

NOAA’s Newest Satellite Will Soon Deliver Hi-Res Weather Porn 11/18/2016 TALKING ABOUT THE weather is, for many people, boring. Or maybe you used to feel electric discussing things like warm fronts and lightning strikes, but lately your weather conversations lack, shall we say, thermal convection. But talking about the weather is just like other interpersonal activities: You can spice it up by looking at nice pictures. The very best weather porn comes from geostationary satellites, and the very best geostationary satellite is launching today at 5:42pm ET. It is called GOES-R, and comes equipped with a 16 channel multispectral imager capable of delivering th…

Best website for historic low temperatures
by Cody Salem- 2 replies

I've been lurking at this website for years and decided that I should start doing some posting. I wanted to share what I have found to be the easiest place to find data historic low temperatures across the U.S. It's pretty obscure, so I doubt many of you have seen it before. https://wrcc.dri.edu/summary/sodusa.html First choose your state, then you will see a list view and map view of all the available stations. Some stations have more complete data than others, so you might have to check a few of them. Even though the website format is a little outdated, the data is auto-generated, so all of the stations that are a…

The Arctic blast blew in here just a little while ago with minor rains in the front of it. Local forcasters say: 23, 18, 18, 26 Weather channal says: 24, 23, 23, 23 I protected nothing, as is my motto. And we have already hit two nights with lows of 26 with heavy frost. A whole lof of palms and other tropicals are gonna get a real test. And I'll be documenting them all.

June 2018 was one to remember for RGV residents. For those who weren’t aware of what occurred in the RGV during late June, a huge deluge game and gave just about the whole region a measure of rainfall. Cities such as Los Fresnos, Harlingen, Mission, and Weslaco saw half a year’s worth of rainfall in a period of three days. While the rain was much needed, the usual of Valley rainfalls occurred, it came in torrents and without let up. Therefore, flooding occurred in areas where most residents felt as if they were reliving the days after Hurricane Dolly (2008) dropped large amounts of rain into their neighborhoods. Thankfully, the rain has brought drought levels to rock bott…

Drying palms

Hello all, I'm new around here and I started this topic because I have some little palm trees indoor and the look like they are either ill of affected by the weather conditions. I've got this little ones from a botanic garden in which of course weather conditions were optimal. In my apartment there is not the level of humidity required, I know that..but since I moved to Germany I managed to grow different types of plants originally from worm and wet weather. It is not the case with this palms, I do not have the name, but I'll get it soon. I have them under white light (9hs), we haven't seen the sun for weeks. I recently put some small containers with water arou…

Deciduous Trees in the South
by AnTonY- 2 replies

I've read through lots of discussions in another forum about how deciduous tree-heavy the South is compared to other subtropical regions. Just one of the many examples here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1789938-why-does-inland-us-south-look.html Such discussions inspired me to do my own research on the matter. As a result of such research, I am now coming to the conclusion that the presence of deciduous trees in the South has nothing to do with climate, but rather, is a result of geographic/geologic technicalities. For one, places in East Asia at similar latitudes to the South are entirely broad-leafed evergreen, even southern South Korea, which sees a…

New Record Set

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain! This is the first July 18th in history that measureable rain has fallen in the Bay Area. Only a few hundreths of an inch but enough to clean and brighten my taller palms. Rain ended by late afternoon and skies are, again, clear, cloudless ones that we typically experience in July and most of the summer here.

Smoke in Palm Beach County 3/5/19
by NOT A TA- 2 replies

Smelled like a house in back of mine was on fire, an hour later it still smelled. You can see smoke in the air as cars with headlights on pass by. Started surfing around online looking for "news" about a fire in the area. Turns out there's a controlled burn south of Lake Okeechobee and abnormal wind pattern is sending it our way, I'm like 50 miles away. 22,000 acre burn seems big to me for a "controlled burn" considering the wind and time of year (our dry season). I'm curious how they can control a 22,000 acre fire in 13-14 MPH wind? News https://www.wpbf.com/article/concerns-over-smoke-in-palm-beach-county/26682517

Just walked out on the front porch. Its moving past chilly to cold. Its 48 on the way to a low of 44 degrees tonight. But the garden looks great, breathing a sigh of relief from the heat of summer. Too bad the cold won't stop here. First frost will change everything, and its only weeks away. Are you feeling the winds of change?

Why I got hammered
by osideterry- 2 replies

I'm not going to post photos of my sick collection of toasted palms. Plenty like them on this site. What's been bugging me is how I got hit so much harder than other yards in my own neighborhood. I decided to hit the topos, and then made this lil' show-and-tell map. The San Luis Rey River is at 90ft above sea level at it's closest point to my house. I filled in all land below 100ft above seal level in blue. My yard is the red dot near the center of the map. Imagine a river of cold air coming out of that narrow channel to the northeast, and then spreading west and south. After winter lows of 28F, 28F and now 26F, I'm conceding to Zone 9B. (By the way, my map is…

After a very warm December 2013 in Florida but a cooler than normal California, the roles flip/flopped this January. Air temperatures are one aspect. Ocean/Water temperatures are another issue. Here are some examples for Jan. 26, 2014: 1 Cape Canaveral, Fl.-65F. 2 Ft. Myers, Fl.-62F. 3 Pensacola, Fl.-52F. 4 Mobile, Ala.- 48F. 5 Grand Island, La.-52F. 6 Galveston, Tx.-50F. 7 Port Aransas, Tx.-53F. 8 Camp Pendleton, Ca.-60F. 9 Santa Monica, Ca.-60F. 10 Fernandina Beach, Fl,-50F. 11 Palm Beach Inlet, Fl.-75F. 12 Key West, Fl.-68F. Interesting to note that the Ocean at the Palm Beach Inlet is a full seven degrees warmer than Key West, which is over one hundred and fifty miles…

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/science/earth/25cold.html?_r=2&hp=&pagewanted=all Interesting article that points out how for the past 2 winters, Arctic air has descended well into the middle latitudes while the North Pole is experiencing record warmth. The AO [Arctic Oscillation] created unusual cold last winter and again this winter in the Southern U.S. and a summer that broke all-time records for coolness along the U.S. West Coast. Maybe this is something we will be dealing with year after year.

Cyclone Marcos, Darwin. Northern Territory.
by greysrigging- 2 replies

Back in March 2018 Darwin suffered a direct hit from a small ( Cat 2 ) Tropical Cyclone. Winds peaked at 140klm/h and really only blew for about 3 and half hours. Rain for the event at my place was less than 100mm. Whilst the City was spared from any major structural damage, the vegetation and trees copped a severe beating throughout the city and suburbs with literally thousands of mature trees felled and some suburbs were without power for nearly a week. My garden, which I have nurtured for nigh on 30 years was pretty well trashed.during the event and my bac kyard jungle is no longer a jungle....oh well, luckily plants grow fairly fast here in the Top End.... …

Over the years , I've had a few problems with WU , but they usually get it straightened out eventually. Beginning a week or so ago , using my long used Bookmark , It did not go to the usual , start page . The bookmark has been there for several years . Now it goes to a maps selection page . Formerly it went to a page with a large USA composite map , with smaller maps underneath that , and we could select maps for different data maps that we wanted . Each one of these had a button to select various area of the World etc to focus on . I like(d) it . I have tried various other addresses at WU to try to find that original page , but can't…
