Blue fan palms
by GMann- 19 replies

Are there any blue fan palms that are smaller than Bismark, Brahea Armata, and Latania Loddigesii? I love those palms but they are all pretty big, I was hoping there is something with a similar look but that takes up less space.

Thanks to the City of Oakland, and an even bigger thanks to Darold Petty, we have successfully transplanted this unusual palm. It had fallen over (taken some trees with it) but was still growing, and had already turned its growth toward the sun. The first day was mostly futile, but the second day went much better, due mostly to Darolds expertise. Working away from the stability of cement paths made for some interesting moments. We lifted it with an engine hoist and a come-along anchored to a massive P. reclinata x canariensis....

Tale of Three Roystonea regia

Howdyall: Larry's post about royal growth rate at his place caused me to review my Royals, and well, the growth rate varies, sometimes a lot, based on particular growing conditions. In the fall of 2004, I bought three baby royals in 10" post from Home Despot. All were about two feet tall, with about an inch of caliper at the base more or less. Below is Spanky, the one in the middle, growth rate wise:

Hey everyone, I am sure a lot of you are familiar with these three infamous palm trees; they are from a good friend of mine's place--Mr. Steve Stern. As far as I know, his three and one at Fairchild are the only ones in cultivation! Well, I have some good news to report: for the first time since I have known about palms(and probably a lot longer than that), these three have begun to set ripe seed! What's even better news than that, is he and I have gotten them to sprout! Yes, that's right, I am happy to report that sooner rather than later, these amazing little palms will be available to procure. I know there are a lot of you that have been wanting this palm for a very l…

I'm reading an informative article published in The Botanical Review, 1982 by Harold Moore and Natalie Uhl that suggests palms may potentially have unlimited growth...and that palm death die to senescence was poorly understood. it got me wondering whether I've ever seen a palm die due to old age and I'm afraid I could not think of anything other than 2-3 candidates of doubtful character (two royals and one borassus). All the others I've seen dead as adults were due to structural reasons or sudden death presumably by disease or parasites. I cant think of a palm getting feebler and feebler with progressively worse fronds. I'm not counting monocarpic palms here. Has anyo…

Saribus rotundifolius in California?
by Geoff- 9 replies

I just ran across this relatively large plant at the Huntington that is labeled as Livistona rotundifolia… hard for me to believe, but it does have huge, round leaves… could it be? Even Livistona carinensis is nearly impossible to grow at the Huntington… is this one easier?? Not sure how I have missed this plant… been to this part of the garden over 100 times so far…. just not that observant I guess.

Here's a picture of what I think is a Roystonea oleracea. Put up your dukes! If you are going to deny, give a key. Otherwise, be prepared to be hee-hawed and laughed at. Or, I'll be. Full monty.

Hello all. I’m a longtime lurker but first time poster. This forum is a great resource, and I’m hoping the SoCal folks here can help me select some palms for their climate. My brother is purchasing a house in coastal San Diego (Sunset zone 24, USDA zone 10a-10b), and has recruited me to help him install a tropical-looking landscape. I’m very excited to get to grow palms, at least vicariously, in California. Here’s the thing: for a number of reasons, we don’t want to be using a ton of water for irrigation. Also, my brother is planning to move away after a few years and rent the property out. We are looking for palms that, once established, will grow reasonably well (not …

Happy Trails

The trails in our garden have been dangerous from day one. They are different widths and in many places dangerously narrow with uneven footing due to the outcrop of large boulders and steep and slippery slopes. When we were recently offered the opportunity to acquire some red cinder at a very reasonable price we decided it was time to drop our shovels and work on our trails. We didn’t anticipate the effect the cinder would have and are delighted with how much it has added to our garden. The red color, which will fade with time, has created interesting contrasts to the other colors in the garden. (The color variation in the cinder is a result of where the cinder was scoop…

value of a 9 foot tall beautifully vareigated Caryota mitis?
by cycadjungle- 2 replies

I was thinking about putting this in the for sale forum, but I'm not trying to sell this now. I have this 9 foot tall palm that next year, will be too tall for my 12 foot tall greenhouse. Any ideas on how much something like this should go for? I will probably put it outside next spring to get it even taller, but then, at the end of next year, it won't fit in the greenhouse and I'm not going to build a taller greenhouse just for this plant, even though it is my favorite palm right now. Just curious, Tom

I just ordered some Rhino Skin K Silicate concentrate. Im going to add this as a supplement to my fertilizing program. Has anyone tried this or any similar products on their palms? Silicon deposits in plant structures (grasses) make up to 10% of their dried weight (depending on species). this got me thinking. From some of the research articles I read it protects leaves from insect damage and is a natural fungicide. Do you suspect or does it have a benefit for palms? Everything I read.. agricultural studies to hydroponic sources indicate there are benefits to 'non-palms'.

Nacholandia 2.0

It took weeks of packing and a week of lifting and loading, not to mention a tree attack on Vista Way that poked a hole in the top of my 24 ft. Penske rental (but we won't talk about that) but we are here! Welcome to Nacholandia 2.0, home to over 30 queen palms, 20 fan palms, about 20 Sago's, 5 sickly majesty palms and 2 butias. I think it is safe to say that the landscape was provided by "big box" and is pretty much as common as you can get for Socal. It is nicely laid out and attractive but will definitely experience a major makeover as time goes on. I will probably leave a queen and washy (or two), and a few sago's but most will be taken out and/or provided as trad…
