Trio ID
by Gileno Machado- 18 replies
- 1.8k views
I bought a few palm seedlings more than a year ago, at a specialty nursery here and they were all labeled as Veitchias, but some of them may be also something else. The owner of the nursery didn't know the species, and they came from another State, in the south. I decided to plant them in the ground as a trio some time ago, using as the third the tallest one from a different species, just to break the monotony... Now I've germinated from seed other species of Veitchias but they are still small...I plan to keep planting these palms here because they are doing great...Can anyone please ID these ?

by BobbyinNY- 13 replies
- 1.9k views
I have this little chipmunk (chipmunks) that is diggin little trenches in my potted palms..... It started out with one of them and is now getting more frequent.... Does anyone have experience with this??.... How do I get rid of them??... I would set a trap, but my wife would never speak to me again - she loves them.... So If I can "Relocate" them somehow, that would be good.

Cocos nucifera at Asda
by Neofolis- 12 replies
- 1.8k views
I went into a local Asda (supermarket) today and on my way out saw a bunch of Cocos nucifera for sale. They were still seedlings, but had bifid leaves maybe 1.5m/5' tall. I can't believe they would actually try to sell them here. How long is anyone likely to be able to keep them, before they grow too large to stay indoors?

Palm ID's
by Neofolis- 22 replies
- 1.8k views
Having visited Kew a couple of days ago, I now find I have about 200 pictures with highly informative names like P1030503.jpg. I have managed to ID many of them from memory and some that I managed to get the name tag in the shot, but I still have loads about which I am totally clueless. Does anyone else ever get this problem and is there an easy solution. My wife suggested writing them down in the order that I take the photo's, but I noticed that not every photo was saved, maybe that was my fault though. Here are some that I would appreciate help with, I dare say there will be more, but I'll try to spread them out over time, so as not to be too much of a burden. …

I spent a few hours at Bobby's on Long Island last night. Bobby, the burgers, chicken and beer were great. The hospitality was the best of all. The garden looks phenomenal. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to seeing you at the Cen Fla meeting in December.

Variation within a species
by RainForestt Robert- 4 replies

I have a community pot (can 3 plants make a com pot?) with some Dypsis sp. I noticed that a red coloration on two of the petioles while the other is green. Same batch of seed, plants grown under the same conditions (benign neglect?). I can't tell which Dypsis it is though. It is was purchased from rarepalmseeds.com. Actually I have quite a few seedlings that I can't identify because the tags are missing or have faded out.

Johannesteijmannia altifrons
by Tyrone- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
Some references say that J altifrons is surprisingly cool tolerant, but that can mean different things to different people I spose. RPS website say this has grown in S Spain, S Cal etc. I'm just wondering what the boards experience is with this beautiful and exciting species. I've heard of one guy in my area, getting one as a seedling many years ago and now it's in the ground and about 1.5m tall doing well under canopy, although he's never let me see it. I've managed to keep 3 alive so far thru winter here inside my cold frame with one opening a small but healthy leaf in winter. So the question is, Where is everyone growing these? I'm especially interested if you're…

First time success! ... and with Co2 ???
by Logolight- 4 replies
- 1.3k views
Some of my my Queen palms sprouted yesterday after only 35 days with the bag method. I experimented with different soil mixes between bags. Also, I don't know if anyone has tried this yet but before I sealed one of the bags I breathed into it to introduce Co2 to the seeds. This bag was the first and most successful to germinate so I'm not sure if breathing into the bag actually had any influence.

Queens in Sicily
by Usufruct- 8 replies
- 2.6k views
I observed some Queens along the coast of northern Sicily this spring and noted that first, despite the high average winter minimums (50 F) and the presence of more tender plant species (Ficus elastica, benjimina, etc.) they are few in number and second, those I did observe were in decidedly poor condition with small, open crowns, untidy fronds, and thin trunks. This description applies not only to those near the Tyrannean Seacoast, but also those further inland. The only Queens I saw in all of Italy that looked healthy were one or two I observed near the rail line south of Salerno. Given that Queens do so well in Southern California, I wonder why they don't seem to th…

by Dypsisdean- 5 replies

Does anyone know if the mealy bugs you see on roots when you take a plant out of a pot are different than the ones you see on the leaves? Also, how much damage do the ones on the roots cause? And, how would one know if there are still mealy bugs on the roots after you plant it in the ground?

Yesterday I bought a 5 gal Adonidia Veitchia from HD for $33. There were 3 plants in the pot. The tallest is about 3-3.5 ft. Is this a good deal? I had to remove it from the rack as soon as I saw it because it was the only one.

I have three Kentias about 5' tall in morning sun that look like I could bale them and feed them to livestock. Same with some 1 gal Rhopies and Hedyscepes. On the other hand, my Copernicias think they are home again and are quite perky. Also my Dypsis, Roystonias and Braheas seem to be enjoying themselves... How about any other socalians???

Can you ID these fruiters ?

Three months ago I planted what appeared to be a healthy 5 gallon Sabal Tamaulipas in my yard. The photo of the plant prior to planting is attached. I have been careful to keep it watered every two or three days. I have also used a weaker organic liquid fertilizer once or twice. In the next post below, I have attached a photo of what the plant looks like now. The leaves have shriveled considerably (folding inward, like an accordion). Have I done something wrong? Is there something I can do to nurse this plant back to health???
