I was at a friend's house this afternoon talking about her landscaping, when she said she wanted to put in a Queen because she liked the one across the street. She pointed to her neighbor's house. And what to wondering eyes did appears? A beautiful Adonidia merrilii about 20 ft. tall. It was on the South side of the house, in a corner with house walls on two sides of it, under an oak canopy. I have no idea how long it has been there, although I do not think more than a year since I never noticed it before. Even with all that protection, it has to have a short life expectancy. I hope they take care of it. Likewise, just a few blocks from me, a neighbor planted tw…

Why are we so addicted?

Is it just sheer beauty? Their difficulty in growing or obtaining? Iconism and symbolism of paradise? Is this even something that is explainable or do you even know why you have such a strong affection for this plant? What are your opinions? Why are you so stuck on palms?

JUBAEA Discussion
by PalmGuyWC- 3 replies

This has been an unusually cool spring in N. Calif, and only in the past week have my night time minimums crawled above 50 F (10C). I have 4 large Jubaeas and one has been blooming for several years. I noticed about a week ago that the blooming one is pushing out two bloom spathes, and they are about half emerged now. I'm curious to know at what stage the Jubaeas are in bloom growing in San Diego along Mission Bay? Since you have warmer temps. in S. Calif., I'm wondering if the flowering is ahead of or about the same stage as mine. Normally, I would have Butias blooming by this time of the year, but only a few are pushing out their first bloom spathe. I used to think i…

Need someone to watch palms in TAMPA
by surgeon83- 4 replies
I'm sorry I have to post this here, but I am moving to south Tampa soon and I have to keep my stuff in storage there for 2 weeks prior to moving into my new house. The palms won't live in storage, so I am hoping that someone in the Tampa area would be willing to store and water my potted palms for 2 weeks (6/2-6/16) until I can move into my house. I will think of some way to reimburse you, whether we agree on palms, labor planting palms or weeding, or cash. They are mostly 5 gallons and smaller, with the exception of a 15 gallon bottle and 15 gallon majesty. All of the pots combined would probably need a 10x10 foot area at least to fit, maybe slightly larger. I …

A couple of Washingtonias(?) somewhere in Los Angeles. Perhaps they now stand majestically over the entrance to a park, or maybe they were concreted over long ago. Does anyone know?

Newest Leaves Completely Brown
by JimR- 23 replies

On one of my V. arecinas, the two most recent fronds have gone comletely brown. The older fronds are still green, though. This is a palm approx. 7 ft. tall overall. Perhaps 1 ft. of actual trunk. It has been in the ground since 2004. It is within 4 ft. of 2 other arecinas and within 10 ft. of a Ravenea rivularis. All of which are doing fine and do not show similar symptoms. What might be going on here? This palm is the closest to the salt water, and, during some recent freakishly high tides we had, the water would have been up on the grass about 3 ft. from the palm for a short period of time. That is the only idea I have had. If it is a reaction to the saltwater…

I lurk around here often and have been taking in info but rarely post. I thought I'd share some photos of my palms from last spring (I havent taken photos since then so they are much bigger) with you guys, although they are pretty common for the most part I like um:) In the first is my butyagrus (I think thats how its spelled) from Moultrie Palms in St. Augustine, they have more then doubled in size since this shot. The second are my oldest planted (we have a large sabal that came with the lot) palms (queens) that are about four years from a 3 gallon pot, they have never skipped a beat even when the weather was supposedly 22F overnight. Also there are some robellinis and …

Ravenea rivularis
by southlatropical- 26 replies

After seeing the pictures of Keith Thibideaux's mother's majesty palm growing hapily outdoors in Baton Rouge I was thinking of buying one to try out. So I was at Lowe's and there was a neglected 7gal marked down for clearance. There is a queen palm planted nearby that should have a good canopy developed within the next 2yrs. A neighbor down the street left theirs out on the north facing side of the house and it has recovered surprisingly well so far. Mine is on the south facing side of the house and the spot only got a couple very light frost last year, so maybe I can wrap it up and keep it alive long enough for the queen to grow out over it. So, I need to get this thing…

Skinny trunk Howea?
by MattyB- 3 replies
Here's a pic of my neighbor Bob, hugging a beloved Howea forsteriana. This is a beautiful plant with the droopy H. forsteriana leaves and green trunk. But it's very skinny. Also another thing I've noticed is that the leaf base scars or rings on the trunk are very straight for a Howea. Howeas usually have bulky trunks with wavy rings. Surferjr mentioned in passing about a skinny trunk variety of Howea forsteriana and I was wondering if this is it. It's not stunted or lacking water. It's always been under canopy and well fed and watered. Anyone know of this variety?

New leaf spear growth rates
by Logolight- 1 reply
Right now my Spindle is growing like gangbusters. A new spear started growing even before the previous spear had finished completely opening it's leaves, and the new spear is growing at a rate of about 3 inches per week. I call that fast. However, being a new owner of Areca vestiaria and Carpoxylon macrospermum, they are healthy so far but each has yet to start a new spear since the previous leaves have opened. ( about 1 month ago) Does anyone know about how long it takes for a new leaf spear to appear on these palms in a healthy environment after the previous leaf has opened? Thanks. Dave

I need a suggestion or two
by Crownshafter- 8 replies

I have this open area here to plant a palm or palms. There is nothing there now except a dead Buccaneer palm and a rat mangled Buccaneer Palm. This is FULL sun, nonstop pounding sun from 9 to 6. I don't want something that gets too tall that it would eventually shade my pool too much. I'm a sissy Floridian and will only venture into 83 degree or warmer water. I am open to tall ones but then the coverage has to be minimal like a MacArthur Palm. I already have plenty of Bottles and Spindles too. I also don't want it to spread too wide and be too thick that it would obstruct my view out of the pool area to my other landscape on far side of yard. Any ideas would be appreci…

My Zombie needs help

This is my first post, so be gentle. I picked up a couple of juvenile palmates at the Mounts Botanical Garden Spring Sale last weekend: A very young Coccothrinax crinita, and a very young Zombia antillarum. I've always had a thing for these two and I finally splurged on them. My intent is to keep them in some nice pots on the back patio and display them much like museum specimens (name tags and all), and then put them in the yard in the near future. Well, I thought I was taking fine care of them this week, but the Z. antillarum just kept declining in condition. Drought Stress!! When I took it out of the pot that I bought it in, in order to repot it, I discovered how roo…
