Fertilising Program for Zone 10a
by chris.oz- 8 replies
- 1.3k views
Palm wisdom says dont fertilise your palms in winter. I have many palms that actually grow during our winter...so its not that bad. Has anyone in zones like "cool" 10a... here in Melbourne tried slow release over winter? I hardly fertilise my palms at all. I am on a poor quality sandy soil, fertiliser tends to leach out very quickly and I am a bit afraid of burning the roots with excessive applications in spring. I think I may have to start fertilising a lot more to get the growth and to correct nutrient deficiencies . Question is, would l all year round slow release in moderate quantities with extra spring fertilising be a good strategy? If not, wh…

I'll be receiving a batch of new seeds tomorrow, amongst them Jubea chilensis. I've read a few comments about how stubborn they can be. Does anyone have germination experience recently, or have a method they think is a winning technique?

Not 2 miles from my house is a yachting community development called Cape Harbor. It has 2 restaurants and a few shops, but above all of those is an amazing collection of palms. For starters, I counted 6 nice sized Coccothrinax Crinita and other Coccothrinax that maybe you can identify for me. Also what look like 4 Kentiopsis Oliformis, again please verify. This place is not very old any most of these palms were bought very large and I cant even begin to guess how much they spent on palms. On to the pics. Anyone visiting Ft Myers Cape Coral,Fl, its worth a stop. While taking pics, I happen to run into the director of landscaping and picked his brain a bit and most…

Looks like saw palmetto on steroids--What is it?
by fastfeat- 7 replies

This palm is growing in the lowlands (Caribbean) section at Fairchild, though I don't know if it pre-dated the area's theme. No tag I could find. Inflorescences are very large (about 5'/1.7m) for the size of the palm. Petioles are unarmed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Need Heterospathe expert
by NatureGirl- 2 replies
I bought a palm labeled as Heterospathe scitula. After reading (what little) info there is on the palm, I'm not convinced. Here's what it looks like. I does not have a 'heel', the leaves have a twist to them and tend to be erect, the new leaf is a deep wine color. Any ideas? If it is H. scitula, does anyone have any info on this palm? Sun, shade, how tall, etc. Thanks

Hello...I joined this forum to try and find a simple answer that I am needing. We are debating with the city as to whether or not we can plant our Queen Palms in the ground and they are looking for information on how deep and how wide Queen roots typically grow. If anyone can answer that for me I would be grateful. Thanks!

Creating a palm lover
by Palm Guy- 5 replies

Hi all, My girlfriend came down for a visit in February and I must say, I think I converted her to a palm lover. See the video link below. She is the one filming while I drive past a group of palms at a local hotel. I started with mentioning common names...scientific names tend to be well...too scientific. Using common names is definitely the way to go. Anyways, she now knows many palms by common name and is so enthused that she even named the Tahina seed she planted herself! Her favorite is Pritchardia Pacifica which is in the video (Fiji Fan Palm). Now, go and convert another person and post how you do it by videos, pictures, writing, however you want! Palm Fa…

Tall Palm Pots
by Kathryn- 3 replies
I have hundreds of palms in the Stuewe and Sons tall pots that need to be potted up. These pots are 14" (36 cm) tall. Regular three or five gallon pots are too short. In the past I just smashed the roots to make them fit, but this was with species that are very root hardy. I have some more sensitive ones and don't want to disturb the roots so I need some taller pots. Stuewe and Sons has some nice ones that are tall enough, but they are over a dollar each. Where can I get some for less?

Trouble with Cocos nucifera palms
by geonomaDude- 10 replies

Hi all, My father planted 2 coconut palms about 10 years ago. When they started flowering, the flowers always dropped and no fruit was formed. In the recent years, both of them produce fruits but drop when still immature. We want them to give some edible coconuts but don't know what to do about it. The soil in which they're planted is rocky and rich in saltpeter and clay. The altitude is aprox. 1000 m. Below I'll post some photos.

Humm, I just wrote this thread, and got a note from Patrick who will be in my area this weekend. Sure Patrick, I'll be around so feel free to drop by. The note mysteriously appeared on my thread before I posted it, and when I tried to post it.....it vanished into never, never land. I'll try again. I have a Parajubaea T V T that has been in the ground for about 2.5 years. The tips of the two newest fronds are higher than my head and the base is about 7" in diamater. It's about the same size as some of the others that have been posted on different threads here. With warmer weather it's growing at a good rate, and it's nice and dark green with no brown tips. I've been giv…

No doubt this palm survived the freezes of the 1980's (single digits and low double digits) these were taken about 2 months ago on 12/23/07 It was hard to photograph as it was on an overgrown lot where only remnants of an old house. comapared to the tall pines me looking straight into it (im 6'2") last shot looking up there were no remnants of seeds or seedlings anywhere to be found. Probably didnt have a mate

So what am I doing in Miami? 1 2

Some people were probably wondering why I shut down shop suddenly to move to Miami. I realized that palms are a lot more fun when you don't have to worry about making a living by selling them. I was offered a job at Fairchild, and finally was able to take it. I am currently the nursery manager and have to say from my first few days on the job that they are the greatest group of people I have worked with. They all have the plant bug in one form or another! I will try and post a few pictures of the garden from time to time to entice travelers to come! If anyone needs directions, has questions, or will be in the area, feel free to send me a PM or email.
