Hello to zone-pushing palm enthusiasts, I saw this article in this week's Dave's Garden Newsletter: The Cutting Edge - A Spray to Change Your Hardiness Zone? By LariAnn Garner (LariAnn) March 14, 2009 One of the banes of gardeners worldwide is cold temperatures. We even have zone designations to tell us if our area is too cold for certain kinds of plants to grow in. But what if you could change your hardiness zone without moving and without a greenhouse? This revolutionary idea is actually a breakthrough on the verge of coming on the market - read on for a BIG surprise . . . Science Tackles Zone Envy? As a scientist, I am always on the lookout fo…

Hello everybody, I have bought this little Trithrinax without name of species. It was placed in a shadowed greenhouse (so quite soft) but I find the leaves too slim and elongated to be a T. campestris. What do you think about it ???

I visited the Lakeside Palmetum in Oakland, California, today, and saw my first blooming Ceroxylon -- C. vogelianum. Pretty momentous. Glen from Modesto and Richard Quiroz were busy doing a spring cleaning of the garden while I was there.

About two and a half months ago I separated a bunch of Washingtonia's. Thread still can be found here: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=15929 This is the result, are they dead? Of the 5 only 2 still look alive, although I have my doubts about the first one. The other 3 all look like this, should I just throw them away? This is how they used to look like..before I experimented on them.

What are these bugs?
by Tyrone- 3 replies
Does anyone know what these bugs are? I think one of them is the larval stage of the one with wings. I've watched these bugs a bit and they seem to signal each other with there big antenna. The ones without wings jump and they can jump a great distance and are quite difficult to catch. I've had these bugs for the last couple of years but this year I have heaps of them. What do you guys reckon. Does anyone know what these are? Best regards Tyrone

New Lows Of The Economy 1 2
by Johnny Palmseed- 48 replies

It seems that things must be as bad as can be for growers these days. I see now that HD has the 15 gallon palms specials for $49!!! These were the ones that were a good deal at $88. I saw areca, majesty, coconut, adonidia, roebelinii, bottle, queens and sagos in the Melbourne and Merritt Island stores. Southern stores might even have more unusual stuff. I can't see how growers will be able to survive at these price points. I mean, how much could the wholesale price have been? $30? $35?

Mature width
by iwan- 7 replies

Anyone have links to a site(s) that has reasonable data on the mature spread of palm trees? The NorCal IPS site has some good information, but in a lot of cases they note smaller canopies than I have seen or would expect. Mature height is readily available at various sites including Dave's Garden, but width appears to be much harder to find in a consolidated source. I have a lot of palms to put in the ground and trying to get propper spacing for group plantings.

Brahea decumbens in a tropical climate
by Al in Kona- 9 replies
Approximately 8 or 9 years ago I donated a very small 1-gallon size plant of Brahea decumbens to the Kona Outdoor Circle where it was planted (by Garrett Webb and myself) in their small but well cared for botanical garden in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is on the leeward coastal area at an elevation of about 120m or 400 ft., therefore the climate is quite warm with minimal winds (mountains cut off the trade winds). Most mornings will be bright and sunny followed by afternoon cloud cover build up. Despite this being the drier, sunnier side of the island, humidity levels usually always stay quite high. Under these conditions grows the below pictured …

save my dypsis decaryi
by CromulentKevin- 36 replies

This was planted fairly large, so it never really became fully established. . .so there wasn't a point where I'd say it was totally healthy and thriving. . .the photos should show the issue. Fairly extensive necrosis. . .even recently opened fronds are already starting to get weird, showing red spots and premature decline. I am unsure what might cause these type of symptoms. I'm thinking perhaps rot/overwatering issue just because a lot of people seem to say to keep this fairly dry. I don't have this mulched around the base and it is on a slope, so I'm surprised it would be overwatered that much - though it has been abnormally rainy in california lately. I do have some pe…

Couple of questions, i am potentially in a year going to be selling out and moving to the Canary Islands, I am trying to figure out whether it would be possible to bring the palms that I have grown with me ( I really hate to let go of some <read all> of my palms. that I have been growing from seed for the last ten or so years. I would also like to purchase some of the great big stuff that the Nursery people grow so beautifully to take with me too before I go.. I haven't seen too many growers of the exotic more unusual stuff in Europe, so I don't know if I would have to start from seed or if there are any growers there etc. Anyone know? Anyone?

I'm about to recieve a mule palm and I live in DFW, I hear from people in the DFW area that they do great here and haven't run in to any issues with them, what are some of the places people have succesfully grown mule palms, and if you've got any after winter pictures that would be great to see the performance of the mules after winter.

So-Callians! Who's going to the PSSC meeting?

It's Saturday, March 21, 2009, the vernal equinox (or VE Eve) and the featured garden is Ralph Velez's place, one of the few gardens that overdoes my overdone-paradise-in-training. Mr. V is a one man institution, and his garden, though I've seen it before, I want to see again, PLUS a tete-a-tete at nearby Mile Square Park, and its Palmetum. I can even take the bus there!
