One of those days
by Tyrone- 20 replies

Had one of those days today. I had a nice Nikau that I planted next to some Dendrocalamus latiflorus bamboo a few years back and it was OK when the bamboo was small. Anyway time went by and the Nikau kind of got smaller and smaller. Today I thought I'd move it, but the bamboo had totally engulfed the thing in roots and was threatening to strangle it to death. I spent two hours trying to excavate it, and when I'd finally heaved it out of the hole, to my shock and horror, I'd sliced through about 2/3 of the bottom of the saxophone root right where it starts turning back to the surface. It was a good 60cm down. What a waste. Onto the compost pile it went. I thought I'd …

Evapotranspiration
by Walter John- 16 replies
Evapotranspiration (ET) is a term used to describe the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the Earth's land surface to atmosphere. Evaporation accounts for the movement of water to the air from sources such as the soil, canopy interception, and waterbodies. Transpiration accounts for the movement of water within a plant and the subsequent loss of water as vapor through stomata in its leaves. Evapotranspiration is an important part of the water cycle. An element (such as a palm tree) that contributes to evapotranspiration can be called an evapotranspirator. Potential evapotranspiration (PET) is a representation of the environmental demand for evapotr…

USA SE Coast Bismark 1 2
by Central Floridave- 78 replies
- 8.9k views
I have a 3 year old seedling Bismark Palm growing at my parent-n-law place on Amelia Island. for those who may not know, Amelia borders Georgia on the Atlantic Ocean coast and is North of Jacksonville. This will be the 2nd winter for it since it was germinated much further South at my place. There is a lemon tree across the street that has been there for the past ten years and produces a lot of fruit. Thus, this gives me hope that maybe a Bismarck can do it. The spot is about 50 yards from the beach and under scrub oak canopy. I'm curious, is there a Bismark palm planted any further North than this one?

Last ditch effort to save

One of the most frustrating things about growing palms, for me, is what I'm about to show you. I've been growing this Veilonia/Cyphophoenix alba for 4 years from a 2 leaf seedling. It's slow but always been a trouble free plant. Just a few weeks ago I noticed some brown tipping on the oldest leaf. No prob, that happens. I marked the spear but it was still moving. But it just didn't look right to me. I've seen this before. It started on the next oldest leaf and so on. This is the precursor of the palm rotting off at the base. Phytophtera, maybe it's called? Not sure. But it sucks. I bare rooted the plant, soaked in Subdue for half an hour and repotted in a supe…

Palm Cottage Gardens 1 2 3
by Central Floridave- 84 replies

I'm going to attempt to get over to Orlando on Saturday and take some photos. But, Central Florida Palm and Cycad Society meeting Saturday, Oct 16, 2010 "Palm Cottage Gardens was Florida's first experimental botanical garden where Dr. Nehrling tested over 3,000 new and rare plants for the USDA. By the early 1900s it was a popular destination for thousands of tourists, nature lovers, and new Florida settlers. Many prominent people of the era, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Liberty Hyde Bailey, Theodore Mead and Dr. David Fairchild, marveled at the garden and celebrated Nehrling's extraordinary work." more info: http://www.palmtalk....showtopic=25388

Clumping Dypsis Palm in garden

Please view the below photos I just took of this unidentified Dypsis palm and see if you might be able to give it a species name. It was dug and moved to its present location a little over a year ago and seems to be well established now. Present height is 2.4m (8 ft.) with multiple trunks, the largest measuring about 3+cm (1.25") wide. Any and all comments appreciated.

SFPS Spring Garden Tour - Miami, Florida 1 2 3 4

South Florida Palm Society Spring Garden Tour Miami, Florida Saturday, March 27th, 2010 The South Florida Palm Society will organize and present a garden tour about twice a year. These tours will often include visits to private collections, residences and properties not often seen by outside eyes. The tours offer unique opportunities to see what palms and exotic plants certain veteran collectors have stashed away in behind their gates and walls. The four collections we were visiting today are located in the greater Miami area and included two that I had not seen before. In these instances, the yards you will see represent many years, if not, decades of hard work; gr…

Attack of the dweezle

Patrick gave me a 2 leaf seedling of trachycarpus princeps 4 years ago for a house warming present. I grew it up to a beautiful 5 gallon plant with tropical looking fan leaves and very silver undersides. I planted it out last Summer and it was looking good. Sometime over Winter it started not to look so hot. The leaves were appearing to sunburn and browntip, even though I knew this species loves the sun, and it stopped growing. I hit it wit some fungicide but it's leaves continued to brown, including the center spear. The past few weeks I've been looking at it thinking that I need to dig it out and get something else in there. Well, today I quickly dug down, ripped…

Hardiness zones?

I'm a little confused as to how to figure out my hardiness zone. I thought it was based off your record low ( in my case that would be 25) but now I'm not sure if it should be based off my avg coldest temp ( 40 in my case). Not to sure if it matters because odds are if I like something it's going in the ground anyway. What do you guys think?

You've probably heard me mention before, the clumping Dypsis that came in as Dypsis ambositrae but obviously isn't the real Dypsis ambositrae (we're talking about Jungle Music's stock specifically, not sure about other nurseries, but they had similar palms as well). It's another one of those Dypsis baronii/onilahensis types. But I have found this particular palm to be the fastest medium sized Dypsis clumper of all, and it takes full sun from a very small plant. Notice this: I planted this palm from a 6" pot (1/2 gallon) late last Summer. It came out of the greenhouse stretched and went right out into full sun, no acclimation, no shade cloth. Look at it now approx.…
