    Exciting find

I had read in the past that it may occur, but I knew it only as theory. Now I am experiencing it live in my garden: a Phoenix dactylifera up to now male, bearing this year also female flowers! Yes it is true. Only presignal was that it was belated in opening the spathes. Pretty much belated almost by three weeks. At first I thought it was caused by the weather but now I am starting thinking of hormonic causes because of the female flowers. Exciting!

    Chambeyronia Macrocarpa toast?

Yea, I believe this spot is perfect, it’s pretty much dappled sun in the early morning and full shade the rest of the day. Picked it up from Riverside, it’s been grown from seed in a similar climate. It was under queen palm canopy. This is morning sun and the damage to the leaflets 😢

    What’s getting planted @happypalms thread

Super nice ! A few of my favorites in there . Livistona are winners around here , I would love to see more of them. The L. Australis down on my hill is a super star. The Chambeyronia Pyroformis is very slow when young , probably faster for you . Rhopalostylus Bauri are fast here and my new Bauri/ Cheesmania is gonna be big in no time! Yours is almost exactly the size mine was a year and a half ago. Now it is almost double in size ! The fun will be in watching them grow , even the slower varieties . Harry
  11. My Ravenala has made it! It survived a 9b winter despite my upreparedness. It looks cr@p to the point that I'm wondering whether it's worth it, but it's pushing a new leaf (not clear in the photo yet). I am curious to see how many leaves it can push until November. I covered it on cold nights with fleece but a single layer. I added two containers with hot water inside around the base. Lowest temperature was 29F. Next winter I'll be better prepared with incandescent lights around it like a curtain. I actually did buy some but the shop sent me LED instead.

  12. It looks like the sap a cycad exudes when it’s taken in to much water. It won’t kill it but the conditions that caused it very likely could. So basically it needs less water than it’s getting.

    Arenga engleri in St Augustine

There are quite a few on this corner. I don't know if they were damaged by cold this past winter.
  14. I have no idea what disease has got this one, but iam assuming it’s not looking good.
  15. I agree. More money for the grower as singles, two, or threes for houseplants. I haven't seen Livistona for over ten years up my way. I have ONLY seen Spindles as singles. I wonder if one would survive outside in PHX near the house, under canopy.
  16. Double, ignore it please.
  17. This sp dioecious, I know nothing more about habit of dioecism, like whether there are organs of one only sex or from both but depending on sex some of them are not functional.

    RIP Pal Meir

A little late but here's my last surviving Lyto. I learned so much from him despite so little actual interaction, and his wealth of knowledge especially about soil mixtures and these palms made me into the plant dork I am today. Do I follow his attention to detail and scientific methods? No. But did he have a lasting impact on me? Absolutely. I've been so careful with this plant after losing my others, and even if it just sits in the corner getting nothing but light and water it'll always be special.

Yes, they both appear to be rostrata. Not all Yucca rostrata are silver, it’s just the preferred cultivar.

    Chambeyronia Macrocarpa toast?

@SCVpalmenthusiast I would give it shade where you are for sure . At least for a few years. Lots of water in the warmer months . Mine grew into the sun from deep shade and burned every summer until I figured out that it wanted more water. I now water every other day , spring through fall , and it helps a lot. Congratulations on your new palm. Harry

    Phoenix dactylifera

I like the Medjool palm. I have these palms, but they're protected indoors. And Theophrasti is great. I obtained pure RPS seeds.
