  2. How stiff are those spines? I’ve held back for years planting anything with spines for maintenance reasons but if they are on the softer side I might try one after flplantguy figures out which one can take the hell of the summers here.
  3. I see several lovely Vanda orchids on that wall.

Can someone tell me what this is...

Thanks! I've had them about 2 years. They've been through 2 winters each one bottoming out at 27°F unprotected with no damage. They started flowering last year but only got two fruits. Looks like this year will be more productive!

Can someone tell me what this is...

Apologies. I was actually responding to the OP's post. 🤣 I should have quoted the post with my reply. However, those are some very nice looking Chamaedorea seifrizii. How long have you been growing them.

Honestly, extended foggy periods are rather unusual. I have seen them, but typically a few days and we're done. These occur mainly in the earlier part of Autumn, but can occur at other times less frequently. None of those events or worse have ever affected my xeriscape plantings. Hoping you and others have a great growing season. 👍

    Transplanting Older Sabal

Yea 2 years it should be decent. I would put 2 cups of osmocote plus outdoor or florikan around it and water well and see what gives. That way it would have all nutrients slow release for a few months

    Transplanting Older Sabal

Hopefully, someone in Central Florida like @Merlyn will answer. To me, it looks bad. It should have 8 to 10 fronds given the climate there. Perhaps drying out initially is the problem or lack of watering.
  15. I have finally been able to bring the three main species of Beccariophoenix together in my Oakland CA garden. B. Alfredii has been growing well from 1 gallon and has really picked up speed this past year (prob close to 4 ft or so of frond length. B. fenestralis has been slow but solid from a 1 gallon as well for the past 3 years (hard to see this palm as its protected and covered by other plants). B. madagascariensis has proven to be very hard for me to track down until this past week in San Clemente! I was able to get a masterfully grown 15 gallon and drove it back to Oakland in my car with palm fronds slapping my son in the face in the passenger seat! B. fenestralis with nice windows! 3 years in the ground. B. madagascariensis with Acanthophoenix rubra in the ground for 2 days lol. Looking good with the recent rains! B. alfredii with beautiful purple petioles and fast growth.

  16. Thanks, from what I can gather they love water and the slightest sign of no water they die. Good luck finding them they are rare!!!!
  17. Hello, Unfortunately this atrovirens has died away (it never looked as solid as I would have wanted but I only had access to two palms from the internet). I plan to get more Geonoma's into the garden as soon as I can get my dirty little hands on them! Good luck with yours and talk to you soon! Jadd
  18. Mine came from the same FB batch as Kim's. It went into the ground in March 2019 from a 1 gallon pot. After seven years, it is now about 15 ft (4 m) tall overall with about 4 ft of bare trunk. The color of the trunk is a dull red-orange. Totally carefree. I had never noticed any spines on the crownshaft, but when I looked closely today, I do see very widely separated short spines about a half inch (1 cm) long. Much more conspicuous are the white hairs on the leaflets. I have not noticed these on any other palm species growing in the garden. Could this be a reliable diagnostic character in addition to the coloration? Mine has developed a swollen base.

    Hints of Spring ..Part 2?..

...At the old house.. Sidewalk Shorty.. Remember, Desert is a dry, boring place with nothing interesting to see or grow.. ...So don't move here 🤣
  20. Me too, Alfredii
  21. We have extremes but the averages aren't too bad, and my well water is very good for all of them so far (and the orchids don't brown tip on roots), so I'm hopeful. Biggest issue so far was overcare (water and frequency) on other species causing fungus, so I need to leave them alone somewhat lol
  22. I don't think so...the leaf plane is all wrong...agree with B. Alfredii.

    Bromeliads 2026

It's quite amazing really, but makes it very difficult to ID species or varieties if they're unknown! I can't think of another group of plants, off hand, that respond so dramatically to growing conditions?
  24. Orchid House at ANSG:
  25. I want irrigation for my palms so bad, hand watering sucks because it takes so long to make sure each palm is getting what it needs. I would to encourage more growth especially before winter to make sure they have a lot of leaves ready to go

lol we haven't had a long stretch like that in a while! Usually we'll get a few days of fog before it burns up and things dry up. Long stretches of it cause havoc with a lot of stuff - the tropical stuff stops growing/begin to die off, cacti (which have no issue with the temps) start to have fungal issues and rot. I had a couple of astrophytums just melt - despite being in bone-dry soil. They developed rot and it spread almost immediately throughout the plant. Same thing happened to a big Lophocereus. Luckily I caught it in time and was able to salvage a small piece which I'm now going to root. The whole inside became a stinky, gelatinous mess.

    Transplanting Older Sabal

2 years later.... It has yet to recover a full frond spread. The initial fronds that were cut down to the cigar shape did grow out but died shortly after. It still grows green fronds, but slowly. Hoping this summer will be it's year to come back with a full spread.
  28. Nice find! I agree with Beccariophoenix, I would specifically say it looks like B. alfredii to me.
