Ceroxylon amazonicum
Hillizard replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Sorry to learn yours didn't live! The Bay Area is more in line with this species climate preferences than interior NorCal. In my case it was likely more just luck than horticultural skill that allowed it to survive. -

Sorry to bring this up again. Tim, please find a local Borassodendron machadonis located at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, approximately three (3) miles due east of Mounts. This photo was taken today and I could not find any "cold stress".

Gracias por su comentario, bonita palmera. Dónde podría conseguir plántulas o semillas de palmera ekmanni?

Ceroxylon amazonicum

I ordered two from likely the same source, but they both dried out and died despite copious watering. I was pretty disappointed, it sounds like you gave them better artificial respiration when they arrived -
New Chambeyronia - acclimate or not?
Harry’s Palms replied to Foggy Paul's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
This should be a good time to plant one . I don’t have the experience with them like Jim does but mine grows year round down here. They do burn a bit in full sun but lots of water helps . Mine is in full sun and it can get very warm here , about 20 miles inland . Since being on this forum and learning from the folks who grow them , mine doesn’t burn near as bad as it used to. Harry -
New Chambeyronia - acclimate or not?
PlantMorePalms replied to Foggy Paul's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I have two that I planted in pretty much full day sun as 1 gallons. It is going to burn, especially coming out of a greenhouse. Despite generally cool temperatures and decent humidity, the UV index gets pretty high here. Mine have been in the ground for close to three years and grow at a decent pace, but the leaves still eventually burn, though each new leaf is holding staying green longer than the last so it's getting closer to being fully sun-hardened I think. As Jim said, mine open new leaves at any time of year and in winter the red stays around for a few weeks which is nice. -
Ceroxylon amazonicum
Hillizard replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
This little Ceroxylon amazonicum endured a lot of stress to get to California eventually! I ordered it in 2025 directly from an Ecuadorian nursery. It ended up in Florida quarantine for weeks, then arrived in California bare-root, half-dead and bone-dry! I tented it in plastic and kept it in standing water for weeks. It's now putting out its second leaf. I've not had much success with this species in the past, but I'm trying again. This palm hates heat waves, so I'll probably keep it indoors in a pot for the future. Eventually it may end up at a Bay Area botanical garden like the C. sasaimae seedlings I grew in the past. -
Hints of Spring ..Part 2?..
Silas_Sancona replied to Silas_Sancona's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Checking out all of them today.. Yepp, it's going to be a BIG year for all the G. coulteri.. While the shyer, potted specimen will be the first to throw -any- flowers this year, even the taller, shy-er to flower so far specimen in the ground is full of buds atm.. Sidewalk - shorty too .. And the bigger, potted specimen quickly sliding flower buds out from it's branches, under the radar ( There were none, that i could see on it a few days ago ) Deep water, 2x a week once the heat kicks in = flowers ..every time.. Rudbeckia / Dracopsis amplexicaulis ..I know guy, ..it's tough being the lone Lawn - Bonnet ( Lupinus texanus ) out there this year.. Sacred Datura, spring flowering cycle gearing up.. One step closer to figuring out just which white - flowering Oenothera species this is... Desert Willow gearing up.. Delonix ..pumila.. with the spring season, coppery flush With Plumeria x Slaughter Pink on the way, looks like the next to to produce inflos this year will be... TLD ( Thornton's Lemon Drop ) ..All fuzzy ..like a Basenji.. Celadine ..Note the pubescent leaves on TLD, vs the ..essentially nekked.. developing leaves, with a rosy blush hint to them on Celadine.. Divine, J -105, Ellen, and Chablis may be the next to join the others in inflo production this year ..fingers crossed.. Ken's White quickly comin back from tip damage / Sulfur powder treatment. Only the most disappointing of humans dislike ..and disrespect.. Milkweeds ( Asclepias subulata in this case ) ...TIS" the Season... -

More general update of what things are looking like. C. macrocarpa is looking rough but is alive. Will cut its crispy fronds once it opens a spear. -

Update on my coconuts: finally went ahead and trimmed the fried stuff off my smaller one. My larger one is always harder to get pictures of because it is in a C. lutescens jungle. I was able to get a bit of a picture today because I’ve been trimming a lot of stuff near the house because it is getting painted a week from now. -

...Out in the Jungle, at a mini Oasis... No chair / bench flipping / tossing Leopards out today, thankfully, lol. Nice Hong Kong Orchid across the street though.. Approach the homeowner w/ a couple free for them Plumeria in the future? ..maybe.. Green skin IS pretty.. ....Back at the Lab... ..That didn't take long.. A little water last night = some high clouds holding back the worst of the heat today = happy Sunflowers.. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> -
First blooms on my Greyia sutherlandii. It was purchased a few year ago from a Bay Area nursery. Tends to drop all its leaves each winter where I live. Hope it will attract hummingbirds.

New Chambeyronia - acclimate or not?
Foggy Paul replied to Foggy Paul's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Thanks @Jim in Los Altos . I should have mentioned, my understanding is that it was grown in an unheated greenhouse, but of course I haven’t seen it. Would that change your recommendation any?
