Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

When you were at tree land, you may have noticed the central oasis display at the rear of the retail area of the nursery. Large examples of Sabal blackburniana and a Cuban royal (Roystonea regia) are planted in that area, and have been there over 25 years. The sabal would be a bomb proof planting in Chandler. The royal is doable, but should be sited with some protection from our summer afternoon sun to get established. Planted on the east side of a house, or with shade producing trees to the west, it will survive unless you get a freeze below 25F. aztropic Mesa, Arizona

Yes sure I will take a look in fall. It's the one at the Rivercenter Mall. There are more spread out along the Riverwalk, mature species.
  7. Thank you for your quick response. Is there a specific scientific species of the Sabal? Have you heard of the Sabal Blackburniana? I’m not versed on scientific names but know types make a big difference?

Sabals do great in Phoenix! Royals are good but hard to find! Mules would be a better replacement than queens!

Super nice looking palm . They would probably not be happy here . Our dry winds would not be favorable , they look like they enjoy humidity . Like Licuala , most are hard to keep happy. That variegated one is very special , I’ll bring my shovel! “ dig fast , run like you stole it” Harry😂🌴

  11. Hello! I am hoping to get some information regarding a few palms. I was at Treeland recently and saw a sabal blackburniana. Is this palm worth planting in chandler? I believe in previous postings that Sabals do well in Phoenix? If so, is this the “type” that can be successful? Also, is there a Royal type (scientific name) that I should be on the hunt for? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! We have two 20 year old queens that have managed to stay alive and still look decent but we’ve lost some trees and I’d like to replace with palms. I will probably use a few queens as a temporary filler (if I can keep them alive on drips) to provide a privacy in the background, but would eventually like to have a focal palm that takes up the center space. Thank you in advance!

Just some queens left to fend for themselves at the Port of Houston next to the cargo terminals (Bayport). Still growing despite neglect and a very cold winter 😊

  14. Flplantguy, A merrillii or Archontophoenix?
  15. Hi Michael, It's very nice to hear from you. I only have heliconias subulata, spissa, bourgaeana, tortuosa, schiedeana, angusta cv Red Christmas and hybrid nutans X tortuosa in my gardens in my home by Karaka Road, Thames. I been trying to get fresh seeds of white heliconia bourgaeana (See photo) from few people in Facebook, but all people were scammers and I were disappointed about I contacted scammers instead of honest seed suppliers as I really wanted fresh seeds of white heliconia bourgaeana, and now I am very sad and I did not know how to get fresh seeds of white heliconia bourgaeana....Can you please help me ??? I readily contacted Bruce Dunstan in Facebook, but he had never replied at all...useless man. I tried Ann Cains in Facebook, but no luck, with 5 people with same names. I joined Tropical Plant society in Sydney in Facebook, and I will wait to be accepted. I contacted Plant Group Hawai'i and I am waiting for answer.
  16. Thanks so much for taking the time to look over the guide. This is very helpful. I’ll look into fixing this if I get time to do the next revision

I would agree with the others by guessing Archontophoenix. The lack of the high arc petioles was what I noticed.

Semi shade not dense shade like my Chambyronia!!
  19. I have one here that, when kept brutally dry, seems to have survived a drop to 24.6 with nothing more than a weed matt cover. I think they survive cold better when super dry but that remains to be seen. It's very small still too, and I expected death last year, so to survive hard freezes two years in a row is impressive. It does look the worst out of everything but the chrysalidocarpus basilongus though lol.

    Geonoma undata Seedling Question

Richard I germinated a batch a couple of years ago. I can say even 25C was too warm. They only started sprouting when I removed them from heat completely. Indoors over winter about 15 sprouted at around 18-22C. Wish I had’ve read this thread before giving them a go. I’ve got a couple left hanging onto life, but I’ve figured out along the way and possibly too late that they like it constantly damp. Even with the bottom of the pots sitting in standard water. @Jonathan this thread is worth a read.

Absolutely beautiful, keep looking for more single stem beauties I say. I just managed to germinate a stack of them, I will keep an eye for the elusive single stem!
  25. If you’re after a beautiful easy growing palm, look no further than the dasyantha. They seem to love whatever iam doing to them. A beautiful understory palm. I have a few in dappled light to deep shade to morning sun and they all seem to love growing in these conditions. They will drink as much water as you give them and a little tolerance to mild dry conditions if you miss a watering. I love them super easy to grow and not too bad on the eye, the poor man’s mapu is definitely worth growing. I even lucked up with a variegated variety from a seed batch I germinated.

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

Another old frond removal today. This one is particularly special as it's the only solitary maroon leaf, red vestiaria I've ever been able to find. And believe me I've looked.
  27. One of the world’s most beautiful palms imo. But they won’t really grow here, so I can only admire them while traveling. In the tropics, their success is their downfall, as, like Cocos, they’re everywhere. Kind of like P. robellini out here.
