    Secateur happy neighbour

    You thought a dog cost you money, I had two horses and they cost a fortune. And all I got in return was a heap of palms eaten and a pile of horses poo, that has no nutrient value.
  8. Now I'm curious too. @teddytn has some listed for sale right now, and he's in Zone 7b (as I am) and only even that under the updated 2023 zones. I wonder whether he grows them outdoors without regularly protecting them, outdoors with some protection from the worst cold or in pots that get moved in for the winter. A native cycad is enticing - but only on my radar if it's truly viable outdoors in this climate. Gentry is Zone 7a in practice (the maps only show it as 7b because the ridges are very narrow here and it ignored the temperature inversions seen around Cordell Hull Reservoir to the north), but Buffalo Valley is truly 7b, and some of our land does extend as much as 400 feet down into the valley south of the Caney Fork-Cumberland dividing ridge compared to the hilltops around here.

  10. At it again with a few more intresting varieties. This lot should keep me busy for a day or two.
  11. What got planted today. A couple of nice palms. A. Ive pacsoa purchase of a vonitra dransfeildia, a nice home grown licuala triphylla followed by a Merc psillakis cyphophoenix elegans. This should give the garden a bit more of a tropical look! Vonitra dransfeildia cyphophoenix elegans licuala triphylla

    Blue and bluer!

    I'd give the edge to the Nanorrhops.
  14. Unsolicited opinion but I lived in Asia for a while (N China)... F*** the law, please collect seeds. None of those countries value preservation of species over leveling an area and turning it into a factory or coin farm. Countless plants species we still have are because people with knowledge on them knew that for the greater good ones biodiversity, they had to have some interventionist who took material, studied them, and put that knowledge into practice through propagation. Just because our species may have caused pollinator extinction, doesn't mean those plants aren't worth keeping around. Plus, pollinators aren't always so exclusive. Where I live is practically the opposite side of the world as Stangeria, for example but we also have bugs here which pollinate them without human intervention. I grow a lot of Stapeliads too, Frerea indica is the most primitive, critically endangered in its native India due to extinct pollinator. I've had it be pollinated several times in California, by obviously totally different insects. Never say never with plants. As long as the species still exist, there is a potential for natural continuation. I the meantime we just have to keep them alive. Probably an unpopular opinion, but mindful poaching is necessary. Sorry, not sorry. I've seen too many extinctions in my life already to preach otherwise.
  15. I'm based in N San Diego area. Lots of Garcinia (and loads of other tropicals, for example I have a giant white sapote in the yard) survive here, but only last year did I try starting other Garcinia. This is batsh¡t crazy, but I sowed some Garcinia gardneriana literally over a year ago, while being caretaker for my ill grandparents out of state. I come back, and experience a bunch of medical issues that weren't related but laid me up. I couldn't visit my rented plant growing space for months. Mind you all, it's been preposterously dry and hot the last couple years in SD, the rain is practically non-existent and never heavy... Anyway, I just got back to my plant space as health improved and saw some amazing stuff. Most notably, the mangosteen actively flushing and zero sun/heat/drought damage. 😅 After like 8 months without water, at least. Seriously, I just abandoned this G. gard all that time and it's stronger than ever. Wild. I watered this this week, but the last time it got water was like mid-September.

    Sabal Lisa seedlings

    My 4 year old S Lisa. What do we think? Evidence that it will be true to form or still have to wait a bit longer? Older fronds are slightly cupped. Newest one strongly cupped.

    Patience = Reward

    Such a beautiful palm. I wish we could grow them here in California.
  19. @Skenny I can hardly see any green stuff, so keep in mind that the green needs to see the sun to generate new energy. Cutting dead ends off the fronds might help, if the brown stuff really is blocking the sun. For fertilizer I might use about 2-3 handfuls of the Sunniland 6-1-8 per clump. That's a highly scientific measure, obviously. I've used Sunniland 6-1-8 for years, and recently switched to their Pro 8-0-10 Tree/Shrub. It's actually slightly cheaper per pound of Nitrogen and Potassium. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sunniland-50-lb-All-Purpose-Fertilizer-8-0-10/1000007606
