I might be mistaken, but I think Greg Hammond had one growing in an enclosed courtyard entry area (complete with little running creek, large glass pane ceilings) in an office building that he either owned or managed. That was the better part of 20 years ago when I was just starting to get serious about this madness. I remember asking him about it & he mentioned that the area was climate-controlled year round at 68F. Even back then it looked as if it wasn't going to be long before it hit the ceiling of the two-story high room.

Standing at 8.49" for the month of May to date. With moderate to high rain chances to close out the month, this number should go up at least a little.

Perhaps the simplest solution is to just stop watering so frequently. If the soil is damp, don't add water! If you're unsure how much moisture the soil/pot is holding, you might poke a wooden dowel in to see how much comes back up moist. Terracotta is perfect outdoors but I haven't tried inside. Opt for whatever you can reasonably move in and out. A two wheel dolly / hand truck and a strap to secure the pot works really well. Consider slopes and steps.

rained again last night an hour before sunset and another burst after sunset too. I'd guess half an inch. Dew point at 73F and humidity in the air today at sunrise 94% RH. I dont care for this sticky weather but most of my palms are loving it.

Thank you for your input; this is very interesting! Do you do this in combination with other methods, i.e. sulfur pellets on the ground, humic acids...? Also, do you use the sodium bisulfate in every watering?

Been a nice month here also, way above average sun but without the below average temps that could bring this time of the year. Amongst many clear mornings, the coldest has been about 2C, no ice spotted yet even in the first places it shows, such as on roof. Last year June 18th was a record, the latest in the year for my weather station to first dip below 0C. Look to be starting June with a mild pattern so we'll see if that is challenged.

Still planting them though, safety in numbers plant enough of them and sooner or later I will have a good dozen of them growing!

Usually about 6 to 8 weeks, but the spear itself can take a couple of month to develop and usually about 3 leaves a year which is pretty good, but itโ€™s agony to watch, you just want that huge mega Joey. Itโ€™s more about the leaves getting bigger every new leaf. So with a time frame like that with months in between each new leaf in a subtropical climate no wonder they are slow to grow!

We need somewhere to post the brom flowers!

How long does it take to open a new frond, on average? Iโ€™m curious, because my little plant has a new frond emerging. How many fronds per year do you get, on average?

Wow! That is many years of experience. I have seen several pics of them growing in Singapore. They look excellent there! I have seen several in Hawaii (where Iโ€™m from originally) and they look terrific there, but are not very common, like in Malaysia where they are native. Iโ€™ll post a pic of of my single-leaf Johannesteijsmannia altifrons soon, which I paid $15.00 at Floribund Nursery in Hawaii about two weeks ago. I hope it will not be dead by fall! ๐Ÿ˜‚

So the remotifolia still stands as a mystery, only now a touch of red in the new leaf, its getting even more complicated!

Where exactly? In Palermo, even with the average temperature increase of recent years, there's no chance.

I wish you the best of luck! ๐Ÿ˜Ž. I know itโ€™s not an easy palm to grow outside the tropics. I do remember there was a very large one (~ 12 to 13 ft) at a very palmy house in Hillcrest on Robinson St. growing outside for two or three years. Then one winter it completely collapsed. I was actually shocked it lived so long outside, even in a climate as mild as in Hillcrest!

One reason I know joeys is after having them for 30 years in my collection. They survived lots of adverse conditions and still stood strong in the collection. I say they are easy after having grown them by the thousands, you soon learn about them, by making mistakes with them. The humidity rarely drops below 65 percent, even at times having 98 percent humidity but without the tropical heat feeling like Singapore where joeys are planted as street trees!

Iam learning towards my attempts at more of a catfish than a white whale. Heres my next attempt at killing another batch, only these ones are a variety that I got from Thailand with the name of black seed. May I suggest placing the palm in a shallow try of water in summer when in the greenhouse. And if indoors place it on a shallow tray sitting on top of some decorative stones for humidity.

Thank you so much for all the detailed information! I really appreciate it. ๐Ÿ˜Ž All your Joey palms look great! Of course, with the exception of the ones without water. You must receive a lot of humidity there, all year. Here in San Diego the humidity is relatively high for most of the year. However, in fall and winter we have the dreded hot, desiccating Santa Ana Winds! These winds can bring the humidity down into the single digits for several days, with temps from 90 to 110 degrees f ( 32 to 43 degrees c). Even very large trees can suffer from desiccation. Iโ€™m guessing Joey palms are as hardy as Carpoxylon macrospermum? I have Carpoxylon growing outside and it looks flawless!

Itโ€™s at least 30 years old, one day just one day it may flower and set seeds. Then it will be interesting if the seedlings will be variegated. Then the fun will begin. As you know I also worked in the Howea industry and yep I never saw one variegated plant. Truly one in a million this palm. I know if I ever get seeds what the demand will be them thatโ€™s for sure. The true home is lord Howe island, and the plants you see in Australia are some of the best in the world! Richard
