Howdy, I recently acquired a fairly large S. uresana. I am pretty confident it was owned by a member of this forum at some point in time. I can’t find much info on growing uresana in 8b wet winter environments other than it grows slow. The one I have is green. It’s hard to know if it will get some blue coloration in full sun (it looks nursery or green house grown.. really long upright petioles). I’ve also read about experiences where people have seen their uresana lose the blue coloration, only for it to come back several years later when the plant was much more mature. Time will tell if this is truly a green form or not. The newest leaf is more blue but not dramatically so. it’s about 9 to 10 feet tall to the tip of the tallest fronds and I’ve planted it on a mound with steep sides in a full sun location in the middle of my yard. I’m wanting to give it the best chance to shrub off winter rains here in 8b Oregon. Either way this will be an interesting experiment. The fact that it’s so large gives me hope that it might grow at a reasonable pace once it’s fully established after a few years in the ground but we will see. I imagine the new leaves will be smaller and on much shorter petioles while it focuses on root development over the next couple years. I planted the root ball about 90% intact without much disturbance or damage to the roots. Anyone have any insights to share on this sabal or how it handles cold/wet winters? I’ll post updates along the way, wish me me luck!

Same here in Australia very common. Now you only see archontophoenix, Bismarckia, rhapis, golden canes and Howea. The chain stores have a lot to answer for in wiping out those nurseries that once had a lot more variety of plants! Richard

Hello :), I would say it was shocked, maybe the palm doesn't used to it. If you say the center spear is healthy then soon it will be alright, just cut out all the dead fronds and remained the good ones! Water it regularly but don't overwatering it, because it will get use to it over time.

Thought I’d bump this thread again. One of the advantages of garden tours here on Hawaii Island, you are sometimes gifted with seedling by the host. Such is the case with these two Pelagodoxa from a Palm Society event about ten years ago. They have grown well despite lack of soil and have obviously found fractures in the lava rock. The one is starting to seed, but the other one is taking its time. In another recent post, a thread about Anthurium, these palms are located in the same area, but are taller than surrounding plantings and do suffer a bit with wind gusts. Tim

Hi Ya Tracy. We are lucky to live in a location where the topography limits the amount of wind we are exposed to. Other than a major tropical event, we rarely see the damaging wind that areas close to us experience. The structures and plantings do dampen gusts somewhat. The leaves, especially on the A. cupulispathum, are very susceptible to tearing and having them stay intact is a real bonus. Tim

Get a pure *Jubaea chilensis*; they are more majestic. They are unique gems for a botanical garden or a collector.

I have some possible pink rot on one of my Archontophoenix cunninghamiana trunks. I noticed it when watering an orchid I have attached to it's trunk. Does this look like pink rot?

I was doing about 2-3x of slow pencil thin water from a hose for about 30 minutes. I just looked at the soil and it’s pretty wet. AI said that the fronds may be dying to give the two née fronds energy to grow. I cut about 3 fronds off last week because they looked they were dying, but I think that was a mistake since the other two started to dry out within a few days. The center spear and fronds look healthy. So I guess thats good news. Just a little disappointed because this is right in front of my house. The flame thrower and teddy bear palm look perfect. Temperatures have been higher but relatively mild for what we’re used to, today it hit 100 degrees. Maybe its shock from the heat?

I like being under cover better also. It’s more relaxing than being out in the open.

One of my unknown Prtichardias has a spadix with flowers emerging from it's spathe for the first time. The spathe is an interesting cluster of bulbuous shaped heads that individually open. I don't have Don Hodel's book on Pritchardia species to help identify the species. Thoughts are always welcome.

My Hydriastele beguinii Obi Island seems to be losing it's entire leaf characteristics as it grow bigger and taller, My yucca is flowering. and Nymphaea wanvisa red also flowered in the pond. Finally, a branch of the Ficus benjamina came down from thirty feet above, landed only about 2' from where I was standing. I don't think I would be making this post if it landed on my head.

If you don't look at the shovel, it is easy to get lulled into not recognizing the size. Looking at your shovel in the shot really gives proportion, probably more so than in some of the palm photos you share. Those Anthurium leaves look like they never see any wind. I am guessing that is due to all the protection from higher palms and trees in your garden.

109 with a Dew point reading of 60, yields a real feel of 119F at 3:27PM as we wait to see what the rest of the afternoon and evening will bring here in the valley.. Since GOES East imagery is down atm, a different look at the afternoon Sat. picture across the area.. Aside from things being pretty quiet across CA atm, much different story across the Rim and high country in northern and eastern AZ where storms are off to the races.. Will any of it make it into the valley?? ..Tough to say atm but, ..We're out of the " hangover " in the wake of Monday night's storms.. Traditionally, during the season, N.Easter'ly steering flow ( off the mountains ) can deliver pretty strong storms to the valley ...if.. outflows rolling off the mountains survive the ride down hill, and the atmosphere overhead is ideal for outflows generating lift as they move through. Adding to this, if storm activity over southern AZ is strong enough at the same time, it can help enhance valley - area rain / storm chances by directing outflows north, up the I -10, that collide w/ southward moving boundaries over ..or close to.. the valley. Whether or not that occurs at some point today ..we'll see what happens. Some suggestion it could, while other model -related thoughts keep the significant, convection inducing outflow boundary collisions just to our south or southwest ..with just some widely scattered activity around the immediate area this evening.. All that said, this afternoon / evening is just the start of what could be quite a wet stretch here over the next few days as the easterly wave / inverted trough unloading on central TX atm, slides westward toward AZ. Wasn't sure if what has been forecast would be enough for the local NWS offices to hoist them but, Flood - related watches are now up for a good chunk of the state for both tomorrow, Friday ..and possibly Saturday, ..depending on whether or not the easterly wave hangs around longer than just through Friday.. SPC also has the area under the Slight Risk area for excessive rainfall for the next couple days as well.. A pretty decent hint that we may see some significant rain across a larger area, rather than just a good storm or two, here and there. As far as how much rain could fall locally.. Good luck betting on that, lol.. Thunderstorm - generated rainfall = always random / can't be predicted with 100% accuracy. That said, All the major model thoughts generate ...-at the very least... decent totals are possible.. Decent =' ing over .25" -.30" for many areas around town.. More bullish thoughts? ..potentially up to... ..or over... 1", ...even at Sky Harbor / in downtown itself. Obviously, while we'll be going from " Hot, soupy, n' sweaty humid " to " heavy coat of air, you can wear " kind of weather, all that extra moisture / clouds = temps getting cut down to the upper 90s ..perhaps even less if it stays really cloudy / drippy tomorrow, Friday, and / or Saturday.. If this easterly wave moves out by the weekend, best rain chances may retreat back into the mountains / closer to the borderlands but, ...we may not be done with the heavy rain threat. ..Too far out to know exactly what it may do yet but, hints in the extended models of another easterly wave approaching the area by the Tuesday - Thursday timeframe next week.. For now, let's see just how wet things get over the next few days.. Remember.... Don't do sumpthin' so dumb that you end up being added to the uneducated moron board of shame. ...Don't make the ...expensive...... assumption that your big ol' truck can cross a flooding wash.. First responders have more important things to attend to than rescuing intentional idiots.

Complete opposite this morning to yesterday mornings -0.5C. Yesterday rose to 22.4C which surprised me. Lastnight by midnight it dropped to 10C but by 2.30am it had risen to 19.6C!! It topped at 19.8C and it’s just before sun rise and hovering around 19C. A cold front will come through later. What a contrast of minimums in two days.
