Cecropia obtusifolia planting spot
Silas_Sancona replied to idontknowhatnametuse's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsUsing your pictures, shot #1 specifically.. Obviously, orange dashed line represents where the stem has died back.. Cecropia tend to have hollow stems, so some deg. of die back is expected when a stem is cut. Question now is: how far down does the die back go? ..is it like Bamboo ....in the sense that any die back from a cut stem is restricted to the stem section above a node ( At the top where the first potential bud might emerge from = dark blue line ) ..Or will die back extend further down before currently dormant nodes located along the stem ( light blue lines ) start throwing new growth ( Circled Yellow Orange area ) Green circled area of the stem / node along the stem = what i'd imagine is older wood that should be old enough to resist any die back creeping toward it ....better than the tender -est newer growth toward the top. Might be where new growth emerges, if it doesn't further up. Shot 2: Is the line i see on the far left side of the stem a wrinkle, or just a shadow? Can see what likes a new bud starting to swell along the node in the center of the shot. Wrinkle could mean that part of the stem is damaged.. You'll know for sure if it starts turning brown / wrinkles even more. In that case, < Hopefully not > new growth may end up emerging from the base.. -
Easy growing palms for the garden
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSSome classic winners in there , Chambeyronias I just plant them like Bangalows so easy. It’s only been in the last 6 years since i turned my attention towards my garden again, I never really even watered much in the past. It’s strange how an injury changes the mind set after a certain age, men was a hernia and a divorce that sat me flat, only now iam getting back into life to its fullest. And a good lady makes all the difference! -

What is your current yard temperature?
Silas_Sancona replied to GottmitAlex's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEHot, breezy, ...and a bit gross out there at 5:16PM. 111F right now, after hitting 115F, with a few 117 -120F neighborhood level readings around 3PM.. With that said, ..what is this i see lurking above the horizon to my east and south? ..Could it be the season's first storms? Afternoon T.C. Satellite view confirms it.. Yes, indeed, weak as they might be, Eastern and southern AZ is lighting up today, with storms knocking on Tucson's doorstep, and some sort of outflow - looking feature trying to set up in the mountains just east of Superior.. Storms nearby = storms for the valley tonight? ..Probably not.. 112+ heat + current position of the 4C High = lots of CIN ( Convective INhibition over the valley atm ) Essentially, when it is this hot, it takes big storms to break through any cap that keeps outflow generated clouds from forming into storms as the outflow moves through. While Dew Points have been rising over the last couple days, they're still below 50 ..Right now at least. That will change shortly. While it isn't in any of the current forecasts, ..and is quite remote, there have been some HRRR runs that have suggested the possibility of isolated brief and weak activity being generated close to the valley / near Casa Grande as outflows from storms to our south ..and/or east.. roll west out of the mountains. At best? ..maybe someone, somewhere on this side of town ...or in C.G. sees a sprinkle / bolt or two. For most? = probably just some breeziness out of the east /south, with maybe some dust and debris clouds in the mix.. As mentioned, it's already been an interesting start to the season ..so.... we'll see whether or not the next couple days yields a couple late night surprises. Similar story for both tomorrow and Thursday ..Gross 112+ heat, some breezes, ..and rising Dew Points ..making gross feel gross -err ..With mainly dry storms roaming the mountains /deserts to our east and south. Headed forward? ..current forecast thoughts offer more optimism ..and actually may be a bit conservative as we reach the start of next week. One thing is for sure. While the 110+ heat should moderate by the weekend as the 4C high starts shifting to our north and east, Dew points will be heading for ...the 60s, if not a bit higher. ..That should help get the ball rolling, storm / rain -wise. -

John posting palm content!!!!!
JohnAndSancho posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEhttps://www.instagram.com/reel/DagrwJmtUCE/?igsh=MTZtemU1dmpnZnllbA== Been a while since I've posted any palm content. TL:DR I bought a Bottle Palm. Now story time. I had to take Sancho back to the vet for bloodwork. Welp they changed the times they go to lunch and I didn't wanna find out he needed more pills after I went home, so we went to Laurel and went to Lowes again. Great luck there, found a pink banana there and it's already more than paid for itself selling pups and it's got 3 more on the way. These Bottles had been there for a while, and were still at full price. I figured I'd just do what I normally do and buy the smallest crappiest one and rehab like I do with philodendrons and pothos etc. So I ask about a markdown and I had Sancho on my shoulder. Bless this woman. She pulled out the biggest, nicest one and marked it down to $19. Did it suck getting it in and out of the car? Yep. Did I still have a $240 grocery pickup to squeeze in there? Yep. Tbf $240 feels like it buys 3 days of food now. Anyway the first thing I did when i got it home was basically drown it in neem maxx. I've also been using SNS209 as a soil drench on my indoor plants, and combining that with cutting off any leaves where I see webbing has been pretty damn effective for me. Anyway yeah it's a little crispy and yeah it's got spider mites but a 5 ft 5 gallon bottle palm in this part of the country for less than the clearance price? Aight. Bet. - Yesterday

Etlingera mangayi
Cindy Adair posted a topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsFirst time bloomer for me and so interesting. Doing a good job on a slope likely discouraging landslides and care free except cutting off a few leaves to better display the flowers. Anybody growing this one? -

Two veitchia palms fronds collapsed
cocopalmgirl posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI have two twenty year old veitchia palms (possibly arecinas). They are planted about 15 feet apart. I went out a few mornings ago and all the fronds had collapsed but the center spike was still intact on one. Then three days later all the fronds and the center spike collapsed on the other one. These have been healthy looking palms and are about 25 feet tall. Isn't it odd that they would do this at pretty much the same time.? I see no signs of ganoderma and they are too tall for me to check the crown. I am assuming they are goners. I was hoping for input. Thank you.

Defying my Prediction

Not so [Datura] wrightii anymore?
Silas_Sancona replied to Hillizard's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsWhat i've noticed, here at least, as it relates to the Sphinx moth activity, They were most active in April / May, when my bigger plant was flowering. See only a few darting around / between streetlights this time of year. Once the rains start, esp. if things turn really wet / temps. become less hostile, i'll start seeing more again, esp. if the rain is enough to trigger another big flowering cycle. 2: Bigger the plant = lots of attention from the moths. Since i did get seed off of them, while i'm sure the smaller plants at the old house were visited, hard to miss them zipping between the flowers on the big specimen here when at peak bloom this year. Ton of seed produced on it this year afterwards too. -
Defying my Prediction
Cindy Adair posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEBack in October 2025 I discovered that a huge banana had made a direct hit falling on this Veitchia. No photo as the banana obscured the palm. It was a struggle to cut the giant banana and remove all the rotting fruit and I might have cut down the palm too. However it was far from a ladder and would have been dangerous to attempt without assistance so I let it be. I noticed as the months went by that the upside down leaves remained green and I had planted the palm where I needed something to hold on to along this slope so I figured I’d use the trunk as a hand rail as long as possible. Yet here it is growing again! -
Reverse Foxy Lady Palm (Lady Fox: Veitchia arecina x Wodyetia) Anyone Else Have One?
Jim in Los Altos posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI recently acquired this Veitchia arecina x Wodyetia (Lady Fox Palm) and am wondering if anyone else here is growing this reverse hybrid. I have a ten year old Foxy Lady (Wodyetia x Veitchia), as seen in third photo and I’m hoping the Lady Fox is a fast grower and hardy like the Foxy Lady. Wodyetia x Veitchia Foxy Lady -
Not so [Datura] wrightii anymore?
Hillizard replied to Hillizard's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThanks for the link and the info! I really like the plant, so if it's minimal risk to local honey production, I'll let it resprout each year! 😉 Not seen any moths this year in the evening, unfortunately. -
Not so [Datura] wrightii anymore?
Silas_Sancona replied to Hillizard's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThough they may briefly get " drunk " after sipping it, don't think the nectar is toxic to honeybees ( They're more of a threat than the plant, btw. ) Main pollinators for these and other white flowering things that flower at night are the various sps of " Sphinx " Months. Great summary, as it refers to any effect these have on honey production, here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Beekeeping/comments/1lb9bjt/will_sacred_datura_pollen_affect_safety_of_honey/ -
Not so [Datura] wrightii anymore?
Hillizard posted a topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsOn the one volunteer Datura wrightii I've allowed to grow in my garden I've noticed the native carpenter bees are now being outcompeted for pollen in its flowers by domestic honeybees. Since it's a beautiful but poisonous plant, I don't want to be a possible source of tainted honey, so I'll remove it soon. 20260706_202428.mp4 -
Photos of palms growing in Southern California - including a new coconut in Long Beach, CA!
Silas_Sancona replied to kylecawazafla's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHave a similar " Instant ID-ing " function on an old phone i'll use for photos and yeah, lol, not always a perfect match.. Been on a mission to resolve the same question.. Numerous specimens of D. regia in my neighborhood, most right at flowering age ( based on height / trunk caliper ) and ..as dry and warm < hot, lol > as this past winter was, thought i'd see ..at least.. 80% of them flowering this year. Only noted 2.. One a neighbor has, and another ( ..that is a monster. Possibly the largest in -at least- this part of the valley ) a mile or two away. Rest look great, ..but did not respond the way i ..and pretty much everyone else assumes they might after the " idealized " winter conditions during their dormant season. 2 that did flower? ..Neighbor occasionally gives theirs water during the winter. " Monster" ? Sits in a yard surrounded by other trees that i'm sure get some water as well. Rest are in yards where it appears they're on their own ..Don't see sprinkler heads / drip emitters anywhere near them at least. -

Easy growing palms for the garden
Harry’s Palms replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSThe ones you listed , some are in my garden , are very nice palms here in my climate . The Chambey you show is about the size I brought home from Maui . I stuck it in the ground , splashed water on it and it grew! Now , I take better care of it and give it a feeding now and then. For many years I just watered everything , no fussing at all . I like to fuss in the garden these days , since my broken hip kept me off my bicycle for so long. I came to appreciate the connection to gardening , I can’t believe I went over ten years without doing much. I even have a wee greenhouse now . Life is good , yes? Harry

Licuala orbicularis still germinating
Harry’s Palms replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSI learned a lot with the Decipiens seeds. I tried my normal methods and the only thing that worked to any great success (about 40% ) was the baggie method on my work bench . Normally the baggie is placed on top of the water heater for warmth but that didn’t work. Just normal garage temp worked. I spread at least 50 seeds in my garden and I may have only a few sprouts .
