    Remarkable palms of Tampa Bay

Since you said you moved around 2016, you'd be shocked if you drove around the area now. A ton of new development east of 75 and they actually have alot of fun landscaping. Some are more risky than others, but yeah, veitchias, archontophoenix, tabebuias, they're planting some of that stuff around the new neighborhoods. But most of the developments use alot of sabals, saw palmettos, and live oaks, which I think is really cool.. putting the native stuff back. And over on the western side of the county, they're putting in a few thousand more houses. Remember that area when you're driving out to Anna Maria Island from IMG area, just west of 75th St (not I-75), and south of Cortez Rd, well they're developing that whole area now all the way to the bay. I know it's been in the works for awhile, but they're actually building there now.
  3. I live on the east coast of Central Florida. My triple foxtail trees received frost damage this winter. The center spears are brown and dry. There has been no new growth in that area for three months. There is some visible green under some of the dead fronds. Are my trees dead?

  5. I completely missed the Rhopalostylis, we had to run ahead of the tour and leave fast, but still had a... Fun drive home in the storms. Some amazing survivors, and if anyone visits dont miss the old growth natural forest area in the back, it was also well worth seeing. We talked to someone there and he was telling us about the future plans, im looking forward to another visit some day.

    Hybridizing

Yes I have many robellini and rectillinata palms both male and female of each but I have heard that there is a certain time when the female flowers are receptive!! I tried last year and had no luck so was hoping for more information!!
  7. Most definitely not a palm in a windy area, but tuck them away out of the wind and you have a true masterpiece in the garden!
  8. Could not be otherwise!
  9. Ground is another, very different story...
  10. Looks so healthy as well!

    Licuala triphylla

Here’s one small palm I fell in love with straight away. These little understory palms are an absolute beauty of a palm. Just as good as any small chamaedorea in the garden!
  15. Nice one, I have been planting a few around the garden!
  16. I can never get my clump to look good, I love them, but for some reason they all fall over and the whole plant flops around. Only the other day I made the decision to remove it. As much as I want them in my garden it’s too unsightly.

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

This one is around 5years from a bare rooted mail order in a 140mm container. I also dug it up once due to a tree that had to be removed. So it’s just really starting to get a move on. Your temperatures won’t hurt the schefferii lows as 2 degrees celsius in my garden. They are tough and moderately paced growing habit.

How fast does it grow for you? I’ve read it can grow pretty fast in the ground. I purchased a Ptychosperma scheferri a year ago. It had 40 plants in one pot, so I separated them, now I have no idea what do with them all. 😂. They grow very well outside here in urban San Diego, though. How cold do you get in winter there? I have maybe 4 or 5 morning low temps of 43 degrees f or 6 degrees c during winter.

So What Caught Your Eye Today?

No, these were all planted in 2020 into this area. Here’s a not so good pic of the Bismarckia in the background. This pic was taken on November 15, 2020.

    Pritchardia hillebrandii maturing

Everyone get some close up shots of the underside of the fronds while they’re within reach! May not give a positive ID but could narrow down which species.

Dypsis pembana an easy one to grow.
  23. The trunk rings at the bottom will get larger when the base widens. Above the base, no. One thing you will need to expect (and not be alarmed at all when it happens) is just before the base widens, large cracks will appear in the base. Don't panic. When the expansion concludes, the trunk will be smooth again. It happenson a lot of palms but is quite noticeable on Archontos. I'll see if any mine are doing that right now and get a photo if any of them are.
  24. @Than can you observe medium?
  25. Lol planting a Pritchardia near the bucket, it is pretty reckless (or perhaps inevitable due to an an already crowded garden?). I see a leaning trunk, is a that a feature of certain obe or more spp?
  26. If ever there was an easy growing little understory dypsis, then confusa is a prime candidate for that one. Easy to germinate and grow. Cool tolerance down to 2 degrees celsius in the greenhouse. They look very promising for my climate!
