    Coccothrinax expert please

Those are lovely . I can’t help with ID , I only have one here . Mine never really thrived here but plugs along slowly . It was purchased over 25 years ago from Phil at Jungle Music and he wasn’t sure which species it was . It was very small and I planted it out in the yard right away . I posted here and someone said it was Barbadensis due to the orange look to the hastula. I am in a 10a climate , no frost. Harry They just don’t look as good here in full sun . I don’t think we have the humidity they like.
  3. My golden Christmas ready to go in the ground caught my eye. Full sun for full yellow color.
  4. Always having something to pot up is also a great way to feel the garden live on a daily basis. Otherwise watching palm grows can take a long time. today was Coccothrinax macroglossa azul. Lot of perlite for lot of drainage. But for those one you have to be patient. 8 months old and still a single small leaflet.

Happy cycads as well as palms 😁
  6. Today
  7. Hi ! I’m in the Caribbean and Coccothrinax are quiet common. I almost sure about the Id of those three : Barbadensis : common here, growing like weed on the limestone part of the island. Argentata : think it’s a pure one, long an thin petiole with clearly silver leaves Crinita : you can’t mistake it for an other one but this one I got it as a seedling “Coccothrinax palm” lingula is not yellow bright so clearly not barbadensis. Seems to grow a little slower, and the leaves are not doing a full circle. If anyone recognize it, or maybe a hybrid.

    Feeler - CIDP

Bump. It just doesn't fit the vibe of what I'm building here. I'm not feeling it.

    Feeler - Brahea Edulis

Bump before I need to waste taller pots on them. 3 in 1 gallon one in a liner, I will bundle all, all 4 are on their 3rd blade of grass strap leaf and growing surprisingly fast.

    Cycad cones and flushes

A nice male dioon spinolosum in cone, he will be a bit lonely as there are no female cones in the garden yet, give it time and there will be, so it takes about 27 years in my climate for spinolosum to cone.

    Cycad cones and flushes

I took your advice, gave a little tap and yes he’s ready to collect. I was surprised at how much pollen there was. The female come is not open yet so put the pollen in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Thanks for the tips. Just have wait on the female cone now!

Dypsis procera 3 out of 5, 2 more to plant Dypsis ambositrae grown by Lyn Crehan a quality grower of exotic plants. Schippia concolor chamearops humillis
  15. With a nice autumn feel about the garden theres a change in the weather, autumn is the best time of the season in my climate just perfect weather, the garden has warmed up all summer and you can see the plant activity. Now is the perfect time to plant in the garden, so the next few months a lot will be planted!

    Buying from the Canary Islands.

It is a tree that grows extremely fast. I grew one from a seed and it was 2,5m tall in 2 years (in a pot). Seeds sprout very fast and easily. So, you could look into that option too. I must say though that they have zero cold tolerance. Mine died when left outside in the winter even though the lowest temperature was 4C and it was covered with a thin fleece. Even in Indonesia where I used to live, you'd only see those trees in lowland areas. It grows so fast that it will be very hard to protect it beyond the first two years or so.

    San Diego Coconut Trees

Thank you man! I hope me haha. I know dwarf coconuts can fruit earlier on and these maypan coconuts are mixed so maybe I’ll get lucky these next few years. Are the ones in Brawley from Florida as well?

    Trachycarpus princeps hybrids

Hey Drew! Just saw this post, do you still have any of the Waggie x Princeps palms? I would love to get a couple if possible! Thanks, Gerry

    Christmas palms in California?

Yeah, here in El Centro, CA, it was as if winter never came. I didn't turn on my heater once, which has never happened before.

    Christmas palms in California?

Funny you bring this up because, for whatever reason, ..These have been giving me an itch lately, lol I thought there was a fleeting mention of someone growing one ..somewhere.. in San Diego in a thread years ago. Don't recall whether or not any pictures were posted to back up what was claimed though. Not just Ensenada.. observed numerous ..really nice.. looking specimens in Todos Santos when streetviewing down there, and just came across several in La Paz. Seeing decent looking ones there ( ..in La Paz ) isn't helping with that itch after this " winter " either 😂..

    Christmas palms in California?

What's even worse is that they are planted at my work (I live in an apartment) and it's a public area, so most of the palms I have planted have been killed by lawn mowers, weed whackers, kids stepping on them, and water getting cut off in the middle of summer for construction projects, so these palms are not only growing in an unforgiving climate, but also in an unforgiving setting! I had two beautiful christmas palms that were killed last year when kids were swinging on their trunks (they only had a couple of woody rings at this point) and knocked them over

    Christmas palms in California?

Hopefully the growth will continue for you. It’s a tough one in the desert . Harry
  27. This one has defoliated every time I get ~27-30F and frost, but has grown back several times. They are a zone 10 palm, with variable damage in zone 9b. They might be hardier out West without the frost. Most of the Dypsis/Chrysalidocarpus here outright died at 22.5F. I am probably giving up on the whole species group. None are hardy below 30F + frost, and have a tendency to die from bud rots. Likewise I won't be replanting any Bottles or Spindles. I lose a couple every time it gets to ~27F, and probably all 9 that I have left are toast.
