Brahea calcarea
IPS Newsletter Editor replied to ExperimentalGrower's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Marius, it is supposed by many that Brahea 'Super Silver' is a more silvery morph of Brahea calcarea. Here are two photos of Brahea calcarea green form in two locations in the San Francisco Bay Area: the two plants in shade are at the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park; the close-up shows a plant in Edith Bergstrom's garden near Stanford University in a sunnier location. Both keep the glossy green adaxial surface of the leaf and droopier leaf segments. Pietro Pucci, Brahea clara was once described and published legitimately by L.H. Bailey, only to be subsumed into synonymy with B. armata later. Its horticultural performance (faster, more tolerant of humid and cooler conditions) and characteristics (leaf form, inflorescence, even trunk thickness), as well as its geographical separation, set it apart from Brahea armata. Its population is completely disjunct from that of Brahea armata, as is its climate, in which summer rainfall is dependable, if spotty. -
Neighborhood palms/some are identifiable (?) and others are unknown
Palmarum replied to bubba's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
That is a Dwarf Betel Nut and I believe I have seen him in person before. The corner of that house looks familiar. He was significantly shorter then. The dwarfism applies to the leaves and crown, not to the overall height of the trunk. The skinny mystery, I am not sure. I would need to clean off those old leaf bases and see what the green leaf bases and/or crownshaft looks like along with the upper trunk. The stepped-ringed trunk looks familiar as do the keeled leaves. I have an idea but... it's too skinny... even though I know it could be stretched in the shade. If there are green upper trunk rings... that could be something. Ryan -

Bauhinias in bloom!
Hillizard replied to Hillizard's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
I think at maturity it looks more like a big shrub, not really a tree. Here's more info: https://gardenoracle.com/images/bauhinia-lunarioides.html -
How would you call this beast?
Palmarum replied to Alberto's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I would call it beefy. It claims the palm descriptor 'robust' all to itself. I like rich's name Wooly Wine Wonder Palm along with any binomial or abbreviation.... Butia eriospatha × Jubaea chilensis 'Alberto' ×Butiajubaea 'Alberto' Alberto's Jubutia or BuJube Alberto's Brazilian Giant The Thing that Ate Alberto's Yard... Ryan -
Bauhinias in bloom!

Has anyone tried B. lunarioides in Florida? I'm intrigued by a US native Bauhinia and it looks like a pretty little tree. I might have to order some seeds. -
Jubea the Hutt? 😜 or Jubea the But (pronounced like the first syllable of Butia)?

How would you call this beast?
Alberto replied to Alberto's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Yes, I planted some shade loving plants like 5 groups of Clivia's of different collors, an Anthurium pedatum, all seed grown plants. Also a Rhapidophillum hystrix and a Lanonia dasiantha alongside. -
Fernandoa magnifica

Or lack of it, ...during the Dec/ Jan/ Feb period within N/H winter at least ..combined with just how warm things were / lack of any prolonged, really cool or cold spells locally at the same time. Be interesting to see how this winters' pattern effects Royal Poinciana both locally and across S.Cal. Suspect it will be a big year in both areas. Quick look over " general " - climate-related conditions during the winter season where it grows in East Africa = the greatest clues regarding what factors would encourage and enhance or inhibit flowering during a given year. ..That is after removing any natural variability between individual specimens that might exist. -

Why not grow orchids?
Tracy replied to Matt in SD's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
I don't recall the name but it is an easy outside growing orchid here as well. Mine started in a pot and I removed some pseudobulbs which I mounted on sticks several years ago. -
Sabal Causarium inflorescence
sonoranfans replied to Walden D's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Here is the monster today, still has some leaves from pre milton, but all above the horizontal are post milton growth, one growing season, plus two winters. My estimate is 35'-38' tall overall you can see the fruits extending past the leaves, first thing it did after milton was send out inflorescences. These are tough palms, the do lose plenty of leaves in 110 mph winds, all post hurricane leaves were bent down and damaged and some continue to hang on for now. I have a couple small ones in pots if anyone wants to defy florida weather with one. No charge if you can pick it up, I don't ship or sell palms. I am expecting all the hanging leaves to fall off this growing season as another 12-13 leaves are pushed. -

Hi, I'm trying to identify what I'm fairly sure is a Brahea of unknown species. It's about 12 feet (3 metres) to the crown, and has a trunk which is only partly clean (not to the ground) is patchy and somewhat ragged looking. It holds on to its flowers pretty tightly long after they are past. Drought tolerant, growing in Santa Barbara, CA. Thanks in advance!

Sabal Causarium inflorescence
sonoranfans replied to Walden D's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Once it trunks it will speed up! Sounds like it will happen soon! Best wishes for a trunking breakout this summer! Fastest growing palm I have grown. My royals are taller but started out 15-18' taller with 4' + trunk. Today they are within 10' overall of the royals, the sabal has responded better to hurricane milton damage. -
Spherical. What’s odd is I have three seeding onilahensis in the yard and all have different seed shapes and sizes and all look different as adults. This specific plant is so what in the middle of weepy and stiff leaf look but has spherical seeds.
