Record Cold blankets entire U. S. Tues Jan 27, '26

Check out this bizarre map of the Continental U.S. This was surprising to see so much of it in really cold conditions, and interesting that Corpus Christi Texas will be colder than Galveston and even Southeastern Colorado the next week! Lots of shivering palms coast to coast!🌴🥶🌴 -
So What Caught Your Eye Today?

I figured this would happen. Models don't do well in florida at all for cold it is always colder than the models show. 20 tonight in spring hill and its always under the forecast so looks like high teens for parts of central florida. Global warming is fake.
-
I forgot i visited the big Butias along "palm avenue"(old Gaston Av) that has some huge old Butia species that have made it so far this brutal decade! prob also will have many dead leaves again. Tony's unprotected Mex blue palms give me hope my beauties will be ok as they have a lightbulb protective the center bud! Brahea armata in winter coat & bulb the Sabal bermudana only mulched. Here is a couple others in the white ness of this cold Jan!

Very possible with wind direction but who knows tonight is forecast to be 20 in spring hill now so after tonight what happens this weekend doesn't even matter anymore

I think the models are getting this one wrong. They show Orlando getting to around 24f, Miami close to freezing, while Tampa stays around 36f. I’ve never seen it play out to where the east coast gets so much colder than the west coast.
-
Exactly. I was gonna let it go unprotected if the winter was mild but Then I notice how long this cold was gonna be and I knew the best thing to do was to protect it. It was planted In end of August

Thank you Allen…I was considering putting the patio heater to work. Your tenting idea makes good sense. I’ll take a look into that.

Impossible for me to make an assessment. I just remember that small bags!I buy by the tens, large bags definitely more than one -
Yes…I’d say a later 2025 planting would have to be protected, especially in this kind of extended freeze. Establishment is everything with these palms and that takes a few years for sure. All the best this winter.

Howea forsteriana…Common But Not Common Looking
Harry’s Palms replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I remember cycling through Isla Vista and seeing the large Kentia Palms planted near the apartment buildings. Even back then( 70’s) , long before my obsession with palms , I knew they were special! Harry -

K here are some pics of the damage. We were under a hard freeze for about ten hours last night and for about sixteen the night before. Didnt get ice but temps went to 23.5 F on my thermometer here at West Houston/Westchase area. First pics are of three queens I have, small. Then strelitzia nicolais (giant bird of paradise), then areca palms (they are alive at the growth points) and last but not least a cat palm. Not sure how that one is doing. Leaves look a bit darker than before and they have that smell of rot... time will tell. I will update.

Howea forsteriana…Common But Not Common Looking
Darold Petty replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Where I grew up there were only Washingtonia and Phoenix canariensis palms. When I attended UCSB in Santa Barbara, CA I was stunned and intrigued to see Howea forsteriana ground planted outdoors as a landscape plant. Now, all these years later, I have about 15 plants on a garden 8 meters wide ! -
In a month or two, we will read about the "warmest winter on record". Guaranteed

How much soil do you buy for one palm in the garden? I wanna make a raised bed for a new Syagrus. -
You should give my 9B a try here in Houston. 23F last night and the last two years lows of 19F. I wouldn't even dream of a foxtail or king palm.
-
Boy, I'm sure glad the NWS predicted a warm, La Niña winter.
-
Yep the angle the winds are coming from determines most of how bad the freeze is in the peninsula.
-
First night of palmageddon and I hit 31.2. Pretty much hovered around 32 till sun up when it dipped quick. 12z gfs still showing the winds coming onshore for west coast of fl with the cold this weekend.

22 this morning here for my first 9A night. 22 forecasted again Sunday morning. Hopefully we are home free for the season after this.
