I actually occasionally remove inflorescence on my Rhopies because I have so many volunteers coming up when I allow the fruit to develop and drop. I’m allowing some of the volunteers to grow where they’ve sprouted in different parts of the garden and I’ve potted up some too but I otherwise don’t need them fruiting all the time. I wish I could tell you what caused yours to break away. I’ve not seen that happen before but you will most assuredly have many more spathes opening in the future. The leaflets are highly variable on the entire leaf and seem to mutate with each new flush. This one’s been in the ground for a few years and is getting ready to push out a nice flush.

Yikes, ECMWF winter foreacast is showing a VERY strong blocking signal is expected over Canada, which would lead to the polar vortex being displaced southwards into the mid-west USA and deep south of the USA. It might not start until January, but that is one of the strongest blocking signals over Canada and one of the strongest cold signals I have ever seen. The most anomalous cold signal globally for this coming winter is showing in the area between Texas and Georgia. Louisiana and Mississippi look like they would get absolutely blasted on this, as would the states above them. The extreme El Nino could be a factor in that, but there is also another climatic shift at play I think with more regular vortex displacements like in 21/22, 23/24, 25/26 winters etc. Something is definitely changing in North America. Increased heights/blocking over Canada seems to be the main issue. Not entirely sure what is causing that, but it seems to be the main theme for this upcoming winter.

How often do you water the royal in Phoenix? It hit 102 today and tomorrow 104 🥵 We’re in a massive heat wave, probably childs play to you.

How will this do in more inland areas of so cal? Palmpedia says full to partial coastal sun. Im about 27 miles as the crow flies from the coast.

At least your gardening and giving it a go. What you should be trying is some home propagation, get a few plants for free with only a little time as cost basically.

Definitely go chunky ( = Pumice / Turface / small Lava or wash grit / no Peat ) in the soil mix next time. Can't speak about the roots ( aggressiveness ) but have seen them planted in commercial landscapes here. Height - wise? 20 -30ft seems a common average of the ones i've seen locally. While they do take heat / drought pretty well, they are messy ..Like both willow and Shoestring Acacia... ..and seem to have weak wood. See these ...and the before - mentioned Aus. Acacia sps... thrashed or completely blown down almost as much as hybrid Palo Verde and South American Mesquite after good storms.

I had really good luck germinating seeds, only to have them dampen off. Will try in a mix other than Peat/Perlite, next time. I’ve had some trouble finding much of the way of info on growing these, locally. I’m mostly wondering about how aggressive the roots are and how big they get. The biggest ones I’ve seen are around 30’ tall. Who’s growing these?

Thanks, Steve Good memory! The ones in my truck that I tried growing like 15 years ago were B. Aethiopum as well, from a different tree, in Florida. These ones came from Jbril Enterprises, out of Ghana. I never had much success until I planted the seeds n the ground.

Ice is my main concern next to frost and center growth death, I don't have the money to replace dead plants so readily, I'm gonna try and plan to get them in the ground soon as I can if I can find the will power to go out and do it. the grass is so tall in my "beds"

And thus an industry was born! A lot of clumping bamboo species will root pretty well from two or three node cuttings. It's an easy way to get a lot of plants quickly. I've been looking out for some of the new world bamboos, Otatea or Chusquea species, but they seem to be pretty rare in Aus, unlike the Asian species, which are in every nursery these days. Might need to find some seed...

Surely not? I hope not anyway! It's irrelevant what the production costs are if there's no market at the break even price point. There might not be 50 people in the whole of Australia willing to pay $250 for a small Sabinaria, but there might be hundreds willing to put 5 Chambeyronia for $25 in their shopping basket along with 5 Chamaedoreas for $25 and one Sabinaria for $100. The profit made on the cheaper species buffers the loss on the Sabinaria, but the Sabinaria draws the customers into your shop. It's called a loss leader in retail. Our local shop used to do the same with fuel; they always had the lowest price for miles around, so people stopped to fill up, then went into the shop to pay and bought a bunch of other stuff, which was where the actual profit was made. The new owners banged the fuel price right up, and yep, no one goes into that shop anymore. The market dictates the price.

Moisture meters for home use are pretty much garbage and can't be trusted. The old farmers trick to measure soil water content is to just push a dowel rod into the ground, it will go down fairly easily as long as the soil is moist, so if it becomes hard to keep pushing before you're at least 12" deep, you need to water more.

My pair of Encephalartos horriwood x horriwood are both flushing right now. My in ground specimen is pushing out another late flush after pushing earlier flushes, including a couple of pups. The potted one is pushing its first flush this year, and finally pushing two leaves instead of one.

Royals grow great in Phoenix!! You might also consider a mule!! first picture is a mule the next is a royal both in my jungle in Phoenix

Potentially, I'll be visiting @DoomsDave tomorrow. I'm leaning more towards the king. I got mixed opinions here before, but I think a Royal would grow well.

Thanks guys for the reply. I’ll manually check the soil with a moisture meter and water manually if needed between the dripper schedule. I agree about the white rock. Unfortunately when the pool was installed and I was landscaping in early summer the palms weren’t available then for planting. In order to “finish” the backyard for 4th of July, I spread the white rock. Now that the big palms are in, a lot of that white rock will be removed and under canopy palms and gingers will be planted as well as ground cover like mimosa strigillosa.

Just plant a royal and be done with it!!!

At this rate I might finish august off above average. Multiple downpours yesterday and today. It keeps adding up!

How old is that palm? I noticed you are in Hawaii so it’s probably only a couple years old!!
