In addition to the bent palm fronds here's the damage the winds did to my Cascabela thevetia the other day.
-
Very unique palm and one of my favorite Dypsis/Chrysalidocarpus out there. I love the contrasting leaflet and trunk colors on yours. Also, that’s excellent growth!
-
Really a magnificent palm. Stout, but not overly large, moderate grower, and good color especially after losing a leaf sheath. Prominent basal leaves on extraordinary long fronds add to the picture. Planted early 2012 from a 1 gallon. Tim

Best method for palm tree removal.
Harry’s Palms replied to JLM's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
For removal , I would hire a tree service to take them down . Get quotes from different ones . After my huge Caryota fell down , I was quoted $1700 to remove and dispose of the tree by my regular trimmers. It was laying across my neighbors driveway so I didn’t have time to source it out . I had two friends with chainsaws ready to help but a landscape company was working across the street and offered to do it for $250! They had it cut up in less than an hour. After the work was complete , they hauled it off. Then I got a text from my regular trimmers saying they would do it for $700 …..as a favor. “ No thank you “ was my response. Harry -
@happypalms generally one or two nights at 27-30F with frost per year. Some years are only 30-35F and vrost. And in the last 10 years I've had two cold fronts at 24.4F = -4.2C and a few weeks ago at 22.5F = -5.3C.

Good point. He may need to find another space. But, the increased cold tolerance would allow him to choose another spot. I suspect her chose that spot because of the protection it offered. If the Cocos had grown, it too would have eventually outgrown that spot... -
Climate of Extreme South Florida Truly Tropical?
80s Kid replied to palmsOrl's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
I apologize if this was already addressed but what is the definition of "truly tropical?" If it's just a subjective term, everyone is going to have their own opinion and everyone would be correct in their own mind. If there's a specific test or set of rules that must be met, that's a different story but we would need to establish what that is first. -
So glad you decided to take the plunge Barry!

Truly tropical areas NEVER get this kind of weather. Very warm subtropical? Absolutely. Truly tropical? Hell no. -
Documenting Freeze Damage In South Brevard
SubTropicRay replied to Jimbean's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
Lots of the Coconuts will perish. There were larger ones in the Tampa area that had been growing well for 20 years or more. The 2010 freeze took care of 75% of those. Hope it turns out better there. -
For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

C. decipiens May Be “Pregnant”
Harry’s Palms replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Could be that it will flower , which would be great . The first few spathes that my Chambeyronia had just fell off but this year actually flowered . I’m not sure fruit will materialize but so cool. Now the crownshaft looks pregnant even after flowering , more on the way ? Who knows. The ultimate would be to have seeds from your Decipiens , as @happypalms says , they are sought after . Harry i posted this on an other thread . You can see the swelling crown shaft even after flowering. -
I've actually got a pretty solid plan and the land to do it, and my plan is to show it can be fully off grid automated and self sustaining for ppl with disabilities.

Very nice! I’m growing two of these in San Marcos, TX. They’re still in pots.

Those are some astounding roots. What was the rooting media, when you say 'neutral soil so you mean a mineral soil with neutral pH or? Also - as someone with a background in soil science, I really appreciate your interest in how soil interacts with Washingtonia growth. I'm working an an experiment with Trachycarpus (often from limestone-based soil areas) and raising pH and adding Calcium to see what differences might occur.

Start work at 6.30, up at the crack of dawn with the kookaburras, 25 years at the same job I don’t even set the alarm clock anymore. And the kookaburras eat a few small snakes apart from that they a close to top of the food chain around here! And I don’t think there are many mongoose getting around to get as pets unfortunately! -
There's grants available but unfortunately I'm not much help walking through the process. I do know that if it's related to food and food deserts they're typically more interested than wanting to grow palms, so my broadened horizons fingers crossed help me out whenever I remember to get off my ass and do this.

Nothing prettier than fronds moving in the breeze! 35 mpg sustained winds would be considered very high here too but are pretty “gentle” compared to Hurricane/Cyclone winds!

I planted an areca hedge in the fall. It's all under canopy and received very little damage. They are maybe 5 to 7ft tall each one has a few damaged fronds but you can't even tell looking at it. I saw 13 nights below freezingbthis winter 26 and 24 on the bad nights. Out in the open I have another areca and it is pretty much gone. I have another inde canopy talents just 2 cane's about 12 to 14ft tall almost untouched and then another clump tahts about 10ft tall by my lanai that got burnt on the fronds higher and away from lanai I guess my point is canopy seemed to help wind or no wind to some degree. They where getting the full brunt of the wind to
