Hi all,

I have a rhopalostylis sapida in ground & I didn't realize how yellow green the leaves are (shown in photos are the newest frond) compared to the pinanga coronata.

The rhopalostylis hasn't been in ground very long (less than 6 months), & wasn't in the best condition when I got it (older fronds were showing potassium deficiency spotting). When planted I ammended the soil with green sand but no fertilizer.

Is the yellow green leaves a normal color for the palm ? Or do I need to add in palm gain ? Answers would be appreciated.

I think it's normal, good for contrasting your palms, so that's a good way to think about it!

good 😃 thank you !!

In very bright light they tend to be lighter green. In full shade they should be very deep green. So, not knowing the lighting conditions where your sapida is planted, makes the pale green leaves hard to diagnose.

I planted a Rhopalostylus Bauri ( Cheesemania) a little over a year ago . It is a very healthy palm and is growing well . I noticed it was a lighter color than some other palms but still looked very healthy . It seems as though it is getting darker green , growing in mostly shade . Here , we have warm summers and these like cooler temps , more so for Sapida. Harry

Yes it's bright light. Receives only morning sun. Bright shade rest of the day.

I would give it more time to adapt before feeding it . Especially as we are going into winter. I am assuming you are in Long Beach , California  you have the perfect climate for Sapida . I am inland about 20 miles from the beach , in a valley so we are about 8 degrees f. warmer than Ventura on sunny summer days. Harryimage.thumb.jpg.5288007d0b02a5ac1f2866b6d1cb6232.jpg

This was taken today . The spear that is about to open will be the third frond since I planted it . It is definitely getting darker as it acclimates to its shady position in the garden . The palm came from @DoomsDave , the first time I visited him . He has very similar climate to me so as soon as I planted it , it took off . From what I have observed , this will be a fast growing palm.IMG_0340.thumb.jpeg.66940e4e35933007ec277d244d730a57.jpeg

‘This is how it looked just over a year ago . Hard to tell from the photo , but it was much lighter in color . Harry

A side note : I gave this one some E B Stone organic fertilizer during spring and summer due to the mottled look to the fronds .

I have a number of Rhopalostylis in the garden and all are in shade to partial sun. All were planted as very tiny seedlings. Leaves have always been fairly deep green. I do have volunteer seedlings in afternoon sun that are very bright green however.

I love these palms, as the florida people can't grow them there mwahahaa...

Yes I'm in Long Beach,  CA ! I'm not right on the coast though - to be exact I am 9.2 miles from the ocean.

Reading your response made me remember that I also added in Sulpomag when planting the palm. I was waiting to fertilize as the growing season is over plus whenever I plant something in the ground I like to give the plant a bit to acclimate before feeding. So glad I waited on the fertilizer !

Your palm looks great Harry.  My sapida also has that yellow mottling on the older fronds.  The newest frond doesn't have the mottling so happy about that.  My palm I planted already seems to be a lot happier than when I got it lol !

I think the cheesemanii is the more faster growing rhopalostylis out of the others.

Toni, I have sapida, baueri, and ‘cheesmanii.’ All were purchased as tiny one leaf seedlings and planted directly into the ground. I don’t purposely grow from seed but I have potted up several volunteers as well as planted some seeds in the ground of which many have sprouted and continued growing.
