A nice butia at Sea World San Antonio:

There were several around the park, but there is only one that I liked better than this one. I should have gotten a picture of it, but between the coasters and the water rides I left my phone in a locker most of the day.

I like butias that are greener, with less recurved friends though. So, others may disagree with my idea of "nice butias."

Yesterday took a nice all along the riverwalk and found a few new palms I hadn’t seen before. Nice big Brahea armata (there was another about half as tall to its right as well), a few very tall thin-trunked robusta, and the beautiful Tobin Center for the performing arts. Some nice palms in this area.  Also saw several newly planted queen palms tucked in, as well as Rhapis excelsa which may have survived 2021 (after freezing to the ground) Looks like from 5-10 gallon size that were just planted this year.

I recently visited the Dallas World Aquarium and saw these palm trees. Could anyone tell me what varieties they are and how they manage to keep them alive in this area? I’m really curious!

They look like Chrysalidocarpus cabadae but more likely lutescens.  They likely replace them with new plants or dig them out and replant every year.  I don't think they survive temps much below freezing.

That makes sense, lol. When I first saw it, I thought it had been there for a while since it’s so tall in person and looks like it has some secret way of staying protected. Either way, it must take a lot of work!

Nursery update. The Rainbow Gardens on Thousand Oaks has silver Chamaerops humilis for sale, I would have bought one, but I have been going over my palm/cycad budget lately. They also had a mystery Cycas debaoensis hybrid, but that wasn't for sale(NFS).

Galveston has royals again 👀 

 

Royal palm trees at the waterfront apartments- Galveston Tx today @Xenon  they where protected last freeze peep the freeze damaged old fronds .

They grow Foxtails in Maryland lol. There's a Coconut pall growing in a pot outside in Corpus Christi.

What does Galveston have to do with Maryland lol. There were huge royals on Galveston Island over 20 years old unprotected. Foxtails and king palm too 🤩 

Coconut has been grown unprotected in the ground in Corpus Christi too. There was a trunking one over a decade old right on Ocean Dr.

I wonder if the guy who had the massive one on tikki island next to Galveston ever replanted one ? He had a foxtail with fruit and a nice Bismarck right up till the 2021 event 🥲

This person is a palm enthusiast.  Bismarckia included.  Lots of mature queens left in the neighborhood too.

Looks pretty standard for Tiki Island imo. You should've seen it before 2021, that place probably had the highest density of queens per square foot anywhere north of RGV. The whole community was really going for that tiki bar look. That street view is from 2020 unfortunately. The Bismarckia are still around though, they aren't really that rare...there are dozens of them in that area here and there.

Hey Jonathan,  do you always feel the need to make a smart comment about whenever I say something about palms that might not agree with your opinions ? It gets old,  seriously.  Nobody including myself is trying to take your palms away. I think he was just pointing out the ones in Maryland last one year. Royals in Galveston lasted decades.

Good to see. The McAllen ones are pre 2021 and are absolutely huge. I even saw pre freeze royals in the northern fringes of the valley like Edinburg.

Yes, huge ones along the waterfront/Ocean Dr and scattered elsewhere. North Padre had many too. I saw big ones in Port Aransas that survived 2011, so I assume they made it to the next decade too.

Here are some pre-21 Corpus Royals, I believe I took these in 2019,  and a decent Ravenea to boot. These particular ones aren’t even on the island or on the immediate waterfront, I think all these were taken in the Flour Bluff.

I don't think so, I knew of some others that were as big as that, but they didn't make it past '21

Yes, I did.  I just couldn’t help myself.  $20 at Home Depot? Ok! I think I have it planted too close to my grove of Washingtonia as it is likely being shaded too much.  I’m considering removing one Washy to give it a better growing situation.  But I think I’ll wait to decide that until next year.  I’m planning on letting the queen tough it out this winter, if it dies, then the Washy stays and I’ll put another Queen elsewhere.

I notice large rocks near the base(thermal mass), a heck of a wind break, and possible south side structure planting.

There are more in that surrounding area. They just seem to magically start appearing around there.

Tip .. Lowe’s and depot have a one year guarantee for plants 😁 so return that dead queen forbid it happens lol

Yes! Once these get some size on them they’ll help to shade the pool for the entire afternoon! That should help keep the water a bit cooler during the summer.
