@Xenon loving that Sabal causiarum. I have some serious Sabal envy going on. I’ve got a couple that are getting planted in Feb or March, they’re split leaf but have a ways to go.

Some stuff from the shade garden

Lytocaryum hoehnei continues to prove its resilience against transplant shock, the 2023 hottest summer ever, and sub-20F freezes. Only covered with a cardboard box. I think it's finally going to look good in another 8 months or so 😆

PXL_20241013_174143674.thumb.jpg.686c1ba0e54176d80053b714b1dfc17e.jpg

Chamaedorea cataractum is back from being frozen to the ground. A direct seeded Acoelorraphe wrightii behind it showed no apparent damaged (covered with a cardboard box).

I'm ready to declare Chuniophoenix nana as zone 9a hardy. It's frozen back to the ground twice (sub 20F) and returned despite being in a very shaded suboptimal spot

I found some more Mules here on the Island 3 different locations in total, there is a single ribbon palm, a Nanorrhops ritchiana, 2 Cocos nucifera, Rhapis excelsa, a massive Bizmarkia as well as my growing collection just on the Island in addition to the usual common palms Washys, Canarys, Sabal palmetto & mexicana, Phoenix silvestris & dactylifera & roebelinii, Butia, Chamaerops, Bottle palm, Foxtails & Queens.

Mainland Corpus I found a pair of Brahea armata and a very old massive Trachycarpus fortunei.

I will give you an tour of everything on the Island if you have time while here (and give you addresses on the armata and fortunei) and I still need to PM you pics of the S. repens I have just been busy and haven’t had a chance yet.

Yea needs more pinnate species but most cold hardy palms are palmate. That is why I have refocused my plantings to be heavily pinnate to emulate more of a tropical environment in my garden.

Spotted on the Island the other day I figured Palm Talkers would appreciate so I snapped a quick pic:

Lastly, there was a nice butia duo with a recovering CIDP:PXL_20241017_210009097.thumb.jpg.ad86991ef7b91ac7c17973960a903025.jpg

And a lone dactylifera that looks like it is recovering also:

PXL_20241017_212531190.thumb.jpg.c5cf17664e5dd01433e50592c6e91cc9.jpg

I think it may actually look nicer than the CIDP though. It's new fronds aren't short and stunted.

There were several around the park, but there is only one that I liked better than this one. I should have gotten a picture of it, but between the coasters and the water rides I left my phone in a locker most of the day.

I like butias that are greener, with less recurved friends though. So, others may disagree with my idea of "nice butias."

Definitely. I don't think it has rained at my house in about 5 or 6 weeks now. I've kind of lost track.

I was at Hobby the other day and they have a couple of mass plantings of big trunking Chamaerops including a weeping one. Today I visited Galveston and saw a weeping Chamaerops for sale but the main trunk was having some issues. I’m still tempted to go back and get it.  However I did leave with a nice Lady Palm. This weekend I’m hitting Corpus.

I think I found a second coconut palm survivor of the Valentines Day Massacre of 2021 (otherwise known a Palmageddon). I recently moved from SPI across the bay to Port Isabel.  Am now farther south (closer to the rocket launch pad) and on the mainland (Still Z10b according to Xenon's old map).  Was exploring my new neighborhood and came across this. I am very happy to learn that my new neighborhood stayed warm enough to allow this guy to survive as I plan on planting a few more myself.

You never know, the wacky tropical christmas tree may start to turn heads in Houston again. Some of them were getting quite big by the late 2000s after over a decade of no/minimal kill temps.

They should plant Araucaria bidwilii again though, the one at Mercer was ginormous up to the 2021 freeze.

Got a handful of Robustas growing in this spot in Austin. The defoliated one is an installment after the 2021 freeze. All of these Robusta have survived the recent brutal winters of Austin surprisingly. There was a tall Filifera but it may have succumbed to Fusarium Wilt or lightning. Unlikely it died to a freeze.

I’ve been all over today and am spending the night in Corpus Christi. I’m playing tour guide and am the driver so sadly I haven’t been able to snap any good pics. I was on Padre island and was shocked to see a yard full of coconut palms. They were all planted post 2021 as they weren’t huge. One might’ve been 8 feet or so. I think it was Caravel drive if anyone is in the area.  I saw a few Bismarkia at a hotel but they were recently planted. In general the CIDP down here are huge and are the best I’ve seen in Texas.

Ocean drive is very reminiscent of California to me with the abundance of robusta. Stopped in at Neuces Brewery and their beer was pretty tasty.
