I don’t remember seeing a bottle palm set seed in California before. This gal is very happy.

How long has that Bottle been in the ground? It looks fantastic and is taking on the “Seus” look that we viewed in the older Bottles at Fairchild more than a few years back.

I have no doubt that you play a paramount role in extending the boundaries of Tropical palms that can be grown in Southern California. I would imagine that you have many more specimens of other varieties that are outside normal parameters!

Sweet Matty.  Love the ring spacing on that specimen, it shows it's happy with that vigorous growth.  I have a neighbor up the hill from me with a Hyophorbe verschaffeltii that sets seed regularly the last few years, but I can't recall seeing his Hyophorbe lagenicaulis set seed.  Are you sure you didn't take that photo somewhere else and just claim it's in your garden????:floor:

My 20 + year old sets fruit like crazy.  Not so sure they mature.  Here's a pic from 2019.  Loaded again now.  Will take a pic tomorrow.

Wow!  That’s very impressive MattyB.

How old is your bottle palm?

I see quite a few around San Diego now.  Some have been in ground more than 20 years.
I noticed these four bottle palms growing close to UCSD Hospital in Hillcrest today.  Photo taken November 13, 2024.IMG_5634.thumb.jpeg.fcf59c9b8b798268539e1b35fa7426c8.jpeg

These bottle palms were planted in the late 1990’s.  Unfortunately, they don’t look as beautiful as they used to once, when they were given regular fertilizer and water.  The larger tree in the front is loaded with seed, though.  Photo taken November 30, 2024.

I remember those from way back. They seemed a little iffy even back then, but I’m glad they’re still hanging in.

To reiterate Kyle's inquiry, which hospital is that?  The color and panel pattern reminds me of Scripps Green.

I'm having to go back here in memory. I think I actually posted a picture on the forum in the mid 2000's, which brought some humorous comments from forum members in places that can really grow these well. Not a hospital, but an industrial building in the SE part of San Diego I passed by on my way to a customers.

The sign on the door triggered the confusion in that it said Hospital Services.  Thanks for clarifying.   Perhaps it isn't too far from Matty 's home then.
