Not to mention hurricane force winds ! Last year we had too many Santa Ana events. It seemed like every week they were howling . I live on a south facing hill and I’ve had 90mph winds before up here. Keeping the gardens safe is a chore. Every gust I hear at night gives me pause. The palms get shredded sometimes if not burned to a crisp. Harry

Wow! 90 mph winds are extremely strong! That would shread, dissicate and probably kill many of my plants. Yikes!

luckily, where I live the winds are very rarely over 40 mph. I know in eastern San Diego County they have Santa Ana winds that are that strong and sometimes stronger.

That’s a beautiful palm! I hear they grow fast to very fast. My friend has an 8 or 9 year old Ravenea gluaca and it’s about 15 ft tall. I have a 29 year old Ravenea madagascariensis ‘Monticola’ which looks very similar to R. glauca.

A reasonable growth rate, not a rocket ship but definitely a good paced growing palm, considering how slow some palms can be. Ten years time you will have a nice solid palm to look at with a bit of trunk if growing under good conditions.

Not yet unfortunately, male and female plants needed. It is a female, and I do have a male plant, but I as m still trying to work them out. Plus still trying to work out when the male pollen is ready. I will work it out and when I do, seeds will be available to you!

So, Richard, let's hope and pray that the good Lord grants us a long life.

I had this species and I really liked it.

(many of your seeds have germinated, again thanks)

Even if we are far away, I always thank you

We moved on to this property 5 years ago and lucky for us one of the previous owners was a palm collector, there are a lot of really interesting palms. One of my favorites is this clumper, there are 9 coming of the base. I noticed today that it is fruiting. Any ideas what it is?

Thanks Happypalms, I've been trying to narrow it down and was just looking at Arenga micrantha, maybe that's it? It's the closest I've found but I'm not totally sure yet?

The flowers are really the only way you truly identify a palm. But a quick search and a bit picture googling is usually helpful enough.

I have been trying for years to id this one and only recently realized you can put photos into a google search, infinitely helpful. Arenga put me on the right track and after reading threads on here and Palmpedia I'm almost certain it's an Agrenga micrantha.

Interesting that a palm can grow in the Himalayan Highlands and absolutely thrive here on Hawaii at 600'. This palm is probably around 25-30'? Has 3 main trunks and 6 smaller ones. I've read that fruiting is a sign that that particular trunk will die off, which makes sense now because on that one there are no more fronds and it hasn't put out any new growth. Which makes me sad because this is one of my favorite palms here but it also sound like it will fruit a few more times before it is done and there are more trunks coming up, so it's not gone for good.

Three nice palms for any subtropical garden. IMG_6237.jpegCarpoxylon macrospermum IMG_6236.jpegbentnickia condapanna IMG_6238.jpegdypsis procera

So my friends Wodyetia is fruiting again . The seeds ended up at my door step . I moved them to the side of the house where they will be cleaned . Harry80901530081__32DDC592-25DD-40BD-87F8-80A68C8E9617.jpeg

Seeds Gromet! It amazes me the size of these. He said it was raining apples in his front yard. I told him to wear a helmet. Not like coconuts but would seriously be a bonk on the head. 😂
