The seed is viable as Jason mentioned above. Germinated a few seeds and it looks like they’re gonna make it.

I just discovered that the dripper on my Lafazamanga came off who knows how long ago. If it was a while ago then it’s safe to say this palm is fine with lots of water. 🤣

26 months from bare root seedlings planted in red solo cups.   Some laggards, some in the middle, and a new king emerges.  Most have split or are splitting.  They are now pretty overgrown 1 gallons.

I’ve got them stuck randomly in a part sun spot, kept very wet.

June 2023…. Dypsis/Chrysalidocarpus Laffazamanga update at about 2 years old….

This guy is the biggest, reddest, and slowest to split….

It's interesting to note how different the forms are on these. I bought two large ones originally (one of which was given to my sister). Mine was a very wide "V" - originally two stalks which have split to four. In contrast, my sisters was a very tight "V" with the stalks very close to each other. Makes me wonder whether the one that is currently single trunk will have a very tight "V".

As for the seedlings, I've had the same experience as others of some being much more robust than others.

Yeah.  I’ve noticed a lot of size variably in these as they grow, and one seems more upright.   But whenever I get a batch of six babies of anything, I can almost always count on there being 1 superstar, 1 super-weakling, and 4 in the middle.

I also learned I’ll never cut off an inflorescence early in baby palm again.   That murdered the original “king of the seedlings”, who wanted to flower after just one year in the solo cup.  I still wonder what he/she would have become had I not amputated its wiener/ovaries, sending it into a death spiral.  I always thought it was a hybrid of some kind.

I purchased a 5 gallon one from Josh Allen.  It is struggling to adapt;   from a greenhouse in Vista to outdoors here in SF.   Not clear yet if it will improve, or eventually be relocated to a warmer microclimate.

How’s it doing Darold? Looking to acquire this one as well. Gonna have to be protected up here though.

scratch that… saw your response. Bummer! Maybe too heat starved?

Floribunda carries these.  Right now they have 4-inchers.   You could get a handful, and grow them up if they cooperate.  You could also get a few other treats to fill up the shipping box, at the same time.  …Win-win.   It takes a little longer, but sometimes you end up with a stronger plant when you hand-raise it and plant it young.  Plant the strongest and give some to your buddies if all goes well.

Justin, it died out entirely.  Many of my palms under-perform due to the always cool, humid condition here,  My Archontophoenix cunninghamiana has about 18 feet of trunk and has only produced seeds once.  Trunked Howea palms have just a very sparse seed set.   :(

Wise words. Thank you.

That is a bummer Darold, but your Ceroxylon and Geonoma give any grower a run for their money.

2 years and 7 months since these were little sprouts.  I thinned the herd a bit, of the weaklings.  These guys continue to grow despite me basically ignoring them, so I uppotted from 1g to 3g today.   Pretty happy in South Florida with no fuss.

At 3 years out from bare root strap seedlings, these Lafazamanga continue to do well under South Florida heat, sun and rain.  I can’t say the color is exceptional here.   They look a lot like Lutescens to me here.   Pretty decent growth rate without excessive clumping.   I tossed a few weaklings along the way.  They mostly just split into triples now.  I haven’t been babying them at all.  Sitting in 3g in full sun but soon ready to move up again.

Thats nice to hear! I just picked up a couple from Floribunda and was thinking they would be super difficult. I was wondering where I was going to find more full shade to hide them in. You think the heat effects the color?

I do.  But that’s just me.  I think our harsher environment doesn’t bring out the best color and powder, but they still seem to like it here.   Early on, they got part day direct sun, and late day shade.   I put them in dappled sun year #2.  Year 3 I tossed them to the wolves…. All day full sun.   Color wasn’t deep green, but no burning.   They have decent sun tolerance for Florida.  Good performers here.  I think half day sun, with a break might be the sweet spot.   Keeping the water flowing helps too I bet.

Just purchased one of these last month from Jeff Searle. Pushing spears lightning fast in half day sun. This spot gets a lot of water

These grow pretty easy with much neglect in South Florida. In these parts, they look to be sort of like a more attractive Lutescens, like without the super dense clumping and overgrown mess. Might be nice for a small center area near a walkway, or a corner spot. Mine are more of a lime green in the sun, than a deep green. Probably would be much happier in the ground than splitting that pot.

Of note, this was the only palm that took damage at my place this winter, with the cold snap and brief lows of 34F. Probably 30% bronzing of leaves, mostly on the wind exposed side.
