My dp baronii black petiole have arrived now I'm soaking them for 24 hours in a solution of 5ml of nitrozyme.

Keep posted as tomorrow I'll sow.

If anyone else has just received a batch, feel free to share ideas, ect,ect

Ingredients: coco coir seed mix, perlite, propagation sand.

2 inch deep tray, community.

Placed into heat box ,28 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Dypsis baronii/ black petiole.

OK, 3 months in of dp black stem

Germination and I'd say all exhausted.

215 seed's= 145 germinated

Thank you RPS for fresh seed

Of the 10 Dypsis baronii 'black stem' seeds I got from RPS, only 3 germinated to date.  My propagation method is far more haphazard than the arrangements I see posted on this forum. Regardless, these appear to be very slow-growing seedlings, at least under my conditions here. :winkie:

Hillizard,  mine are just as slow, 6 months from first emergence until full expansion of the eophyll.  :(

I finished up with 5 seedlings out of nine seeds sprouted. I can't remember what happened to the four that didn't make it, but I think they were undersized and browned-off shortly after germinating. I was probably a little ruthless too, and threw out a couple of runts! I'm not sure if I'm keeping these too wet, as you can see - leaf die-back appears premature on one of them. This has claimed a whole leaf on one of the five. Do they prefer only lightly moist?

I got 200 seeds July 2018, around 165 germinated. One year on pulling out 5th set of leafs. Germinated in coco coir community pots with bottom heat. These have been left in my greenhouse, in bright defused light.

my experience with these is the same as yours. roughly 6 or 7 months from germination until expansion of the eophyll.

Thanks Darold and Josue for that information! It's good to know my results are basically the same as yours, despite probably different germination methods. I hope growth of this species picks up after it puts out a few more leaves and develops more roots... and end up looking like John in Andalucia's and palmad Merc's!

Hilliard, what is your soil mix? 

In a freeable mix the roots will develop alot quicker resulting in faster development. 

I've got these in equal parts 

Coco coir for pots, composted pine bark fines, course perlite, and hydrocorn (expanded clay pebbles).

This is an interesting palm. It grows and acts differently in absence of heat and humidity. Gains color and speed in summer, loses color and grows slow in winter. I doubt it will ever look like the plants in habitat or Vakona Lodge here in SoCal.,

So far I have had 50% germination .

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Dave , I germinated mine in fine gravel with about 10% coco peat mixed in . The medium was just very slightly on the dry side of moist. A mere suggestion of moisture.
