I've been growing this little puppie for a few years now and it's really starting to show some size (for a macroglossa in CA). That's a 15 gallon pot next to it for scale.

looks great. I imagine like other Copernicia out here it's slow growing and greatly prefers summer heat and its warmer evenings....

Not sure about C. macroglossa, but my C. crinita hybrid, in an unirrigated spot that gets afternoon heat (west side of the house) was a very slow grower until it suddenly speeded up; now it's got a booming crown and a bit of trunk.  The mattyglossa is looking fine.

Be patient Matty as the journey to maturity is a long and enjoyable road.

This palm was grown from a small five on a south facing exposure and planted almost nineteen years ago.image.thumb.jpg.a355d175bc823fb6b2701b79

Nice palm!  Like most Copernicia, slow, but worth the wait.

this is one of those palms that looks very cool in their juvenile stage. It's just the juvenile stage can last 20 years here in California

Here's one in Palm Desert, Holly Clow of the Palm Society of Southern California provides scale. I think that palm is about the same age as Jeff's.

These do well in Sarasota (central Florida) near the coast.  I was told they wouldn't survive our cold.  Ours is ten or eleven years in ground from a 3-gallon pot.  Just took a photo a week or two ago.  It is now 8-10 feet across and about the same in height.

Are these supposed to be trimmed or no? I see them referred to as petticoat palms but if they get trimmed they don't look like they have the petticoat right?

Trimming either a macroglossa or borhidiana is grounds for termination of IPS membership

They should not be trimmed. But....as they get bigger like mine in the yard, it did drop it's lower leaves and now exposes some wood trunk. There's no getting around this.

Thanks, Cindy and Josh!  Being a neat freak, it was very difficult for me to leave the brown, persistent leaves on, but I was told that it's a big no-no to trim them, so I did, and now I love the cool petticoat.

Zeeth, that one is incredible!  I wonder how old that is.  Where is that?

That's at Fairchild near the Royal Palm Lake. I'll check to see if it has a date on it the next time I'm there (which should be sometime next week).
