For fert, see if you can find "Palm Plus" by NitroPhos in Houston.  Grant Stephenson at Horticultural Consultants claims to have helped them develop this formula for palms.  I think it's 13:5:13.  It also has lots of Fe, Mn, Mg and other minors and is timed released.  I fertilize around three times per year with this stuff.  I also feed everything in the yard with Epsom Salts (Mg) in the spring and Muriate of Potash (0-0-60) just before it gets really cold for the "antifreeze" effect.

She's fiberglass.  She came from our local version of CowParade, all the proceeds of which went to Texas Childrens: http://www.cowparade.com/WorldwideGallery.php?id=1011  BTW, don't read the artist's explanation.  The cow is better on her own without the narrative.

Steve,

Do you really think 0-0-60 helps with the cold? Just 2 degrees of added cold protection would help me greatly in the winter.

I can only tell you anecdotally whether 0-0-60 works as promised.  I've never done a controlled experiment.  My yard is small, so I tend to broadcast it everywhere, in the lawn as well as the beds the palms are in.  For my StAugustinegrass, you can plainly see the difference after a cold snap.  My grass stays much greener than the neighbors'.

With palms, it's hard to tell.  I think I've gotten to 29F once since I've owned palms and haven't had many marginal species.  What I've heard, though, is that if you give a palm a few weeks to take up the K it acts like any other solution.  It lowers the freezing point of the solution such that the tissues do not freeze and consequently damage as easily in the first few degrees below freezing.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info.  If I can find the stuff, I'll try it this fall.  I sure could have used a couple of degrees help this past winter. Only 2 degrees probably would have made a big difference.
