I think brother @DoomsDave sent me these seeds about 2 years ago. At least I'm pretty sure they came from him because there's an absolute *expletive deleted* ton of them, and that's his style. If you've ever received seeds from Dave, you know when he sends seeds HE SENDS SEEDS. I'll be honest, I let them sit in a box for a while, then I did what I normally do and soaked them, put them in coir on a mat. And they languished and did nothing. Eventually, I pulled them out, soaked them again, and put them in another baggie about 6 months ago and put them back on a heat mat, this time with a thermostat (set to 87.5 if it matters). So this morning I start cleaning stuff out and finding stuff I'm giving up on - there's some seeds I KNOW have dried out, there's some stuff in pots I KNOW isn't going to sprout, and I lift up this baggie and I see green! I pulled these 2 out, there's another one that I'm gonna let marinate for another week or so, and a few more showing eyes. So that's cool! If I had known I was gonna find these, I would have recorded the video of me squealing profanities. I'm guessing these are gonna be in pots here and should be fun since the Google machine says they don't like constant humidity and don't like anything below 20°F but any care tips are appreciated and I'll be digging around the interwebs later.4 points

There magical little palms and I have been told they will set seeds one day, iam choosing certain varieties of palms to plant for both ornamental affect and seed! Richard3 points

My Parajubaea torallyi var microcarpa was purchased as a small 1gl and planted straight away in late 2006. It was my first non big box store purchase and survived the great freeze of 2007 months after panting. It is huge and hard tp photograph. I tried to get scale of the base with a 15gl bucket but the picture doesn't show how big it is because of the surrounding plants.3 points

A beautiful palm the lanceolata, the colour of the leaves and petioles are beautiful. I have a few in the ground and there actually quite tough with a little tolerance to dry conditions but definitely prefer water and any amount given to them. Iam sure these juvenile palms will look good in the years to come.2 points

Ok. For those of you that have been keeping up with my progress either here or on YouTube - https://youtube.com/@dbljzzl?si=emSKwA_UgMn_5vPm I just got my inspection from the MS Dept of Agriculture. So that's fun. The only concern he had was with the hibiscus - they're apparently related to cotton and there's a type of bug that'll get into them but since mine is indoors it's not a concern unless I propagate it to sell and ship it, and then they'd have to come check it before it went out. But other than that, he didn't see anything funky. Anyway - just wanted to throw that out there and humble brag.2 points

Brahea Edulis are fairly easy palms . I’m glad you got a couple . They can take sun at an early stage , mine was planted in full sun , after buying it in a 10” pot , down in gopherville . Nothing bothers it ! It is really big now , after 25+ years . Much faster than Brahea Armata. Harry ‘I’ve posted this pic a few times before , it shows how it adapted to the hillside. The only one down there that did this.2 points

It doesn’t worry me i have gotten my slice of pie in the world that’s for sharing around. You tell people you don’t have children and they look at you weird like are you not human no kids, well I have my garden and my palms and my happiness and if it makes me happy buying plants then I will buy plants!2 points
-
and with you Mr Ugo,And there are already six people I know on this forum who don't have children! We can certainly all agree that there's a lot of ignorance! Just married and just back from their honeymoon, many people were asking to my wife "Are you already pregnant?" And it had only been about ten days since the wedding. These people made me think about how much ignorance and immorality there is.2 points
-
I was asked a few years ago by someone who just met me, do you have any children? My answer was no I don’t have children his reply was, well you have money if you have no kids. I never looked at them as repetitive I was just sharing my plants and the joy of such great plants, I had no idea you could put them all together or even know how to do such a thing, but iam glad @kinzyjr has put them all together, iam totally amazed at how many plants I have purchased for one and it’s a great diary to have in the format they are in!2 points

Well you got one meso that’s in better condition than mine, as John Cleese would say it’s dead! Cold picked it off season by season until it no longer existed! Richard2 points

This year I sent thousands of Decipiens seeds out . I only charge for the shipping and cost of bubble envelopes but quite a few folks threw in a bit extra . It was still below any kind of financial red flag . My wife was concerned about it as she does the books for my small tool grinding shop ( day job!) . I could easily claim a loss if I included cost of transport to and from Ventura ( and the post office ) to gather seeds so I told her not to worry about it . So far , so good . I am out of seeds , other than personal use here . I don’t plan on selling plants or seedlings but trade? Who knows! I know nothing about the ag business , here in Southern California , but I’ve been in business with my shop for almost 40 years and it costs quite a bit to be “ legal “. I do work for major companies so I prefer to be above board with it . The money is substantial and I would hate to have to worry about it so I pay my taxes and have a business license . The insurance is expensive even without employees . I keep my door locked when I’m working but I still have to have liability insurance for the few “ walk ins “ I get. They bang on my warehouse door to be let in . I guess it depends on what you’re doing as to whether you want it as a hobby , like collecting palms , or selling through outlets like Etsy . My cold microclimate has shown its teeth this morning. I had 4.5 C in my garden before sunrise and very high humidity, around 90%; much colder than the temperature on the coast, few km away, where it was ~10 C. We've had clear skies for 3 days now and every night seems to get colder than the previous ones. Clear skies will continue for another few days at least. I wasn't expecting such lows so early in the season, as our real winter usually starts around Christmas, and now I am more pessimistic about many of my plants. 😒2 points

So you guys or girls have to register as a business to sell plants even as a hobby. How absurd I can just grow plants and sell them, we do have quarantine states within Australia that I can’t sell and ship plants to basically I need a phytosanitary certificate or something like that to sell and ship them to those states, but apart from that nothing else. We do a have a registered nursery industry though for commercial nursery owners!2 points

I ordered large quantities of seeds (several species 100+ each), so that probably raised an eyebrow. It was already inspected by the USDA, so I wasn't concerned about it passing.2 points

Matt I absolutely 100% full chest unequivocally blame my love/obsession with bananas on you. I think it's the first 2 that were in the grow bag - they're at the point where I need to raise the grow lights up already. And the ones that didn't have any roots are doing pretty good too. So thank you for turning me on to the entire genus there.2 points

Wow Jim . That is nice , a very large frond on that. It looks like a Chambeyronia is trying to steal the show !🙂 . I have a Cocothrinax Barbadensis that gets a bit of scale now and then . I have always wondered why just that palm . I have had minor outbreaks on other palms that have resolved with intervention but the Cocothrinax is reoccurring. Harry2 points

I understand iam going into unknown palm territory and pushing the palm boundaries with what’s new and getting around Australia, and zone pushing with new plants and seeds one can only try!2 points

Sure Jon, it's yours! And you can feel free to take some of those banana plants from behind it, too.2 points

And this morning I got a visit from the MS Dept of Agriculture, and all is well. Plus he got to meet Sancho. He said he wondered about the name of the nursery, but it makes sense now. Next up is grant applications.2 points

Those are pleasant temperatures, Than. We had 16 degrees Celsius with a warm wind on Monday afternoon. Today it's foggy and 2.3 degrees Celsius, with temperatures possibly rising to 11 degrees Celsius. The next 7 days will be similar, with a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 11 degrees Celsius... The fog has a somewhat mystical effect...2 points

Yes. Most of my palms continue growth during the winter and being well fed during the cooler time of the year is much healthier than being undernourished. A well fed palm will endure cold periods much better than one starved of nutrients. In my climate, there’s really no good reason to hold off feeding a slow release fertilizer going into winter.2 points

Of course, my friend Giuseppe. We are a human civilization, not beasts. I believe that other worlds inhabited by humans with different cultures and civilizations are closer to what God intends us to be, with strong morals and respect for others.1 point

Kerriodoxas and joeys are my favourite ones, I first learned on Bismarck palms about remote germination palms.1 point

Even in San Diego young papaya plants like very small pots with very good drainage and very little water during winter or they can die. Small, young plants (5 to 8 inches tall) have no issues in the ground here during winter, though. In fact, they prefer to be in the ground.1 point

Not a sun lover just bright light, but it is a beautiful little flower, I even have my one now with a couple of seeds on it, it will be interesting to see how they go.1 point

My favorite Sabal as well. Unfortunately the gophers liked “Marty” enough to make a meal of it. 🙁 Harry1 point

I'm no expert either. Literally saw a $25 pot with a mom and 6 pups and thought "I'll bet I could sell the pups for what I pay for the whole pot in a few months," I just didn't know that "a few months" would turn into "2 weeks." I guess we can confirm conditions in my grow room are awesome for tropicals. It's literally like Florida in there.1 point

90 today ( a record if we hit it ) Upper to mid 80s to start the week / lows 55 - 65. Low 80s and 70s later on ..and perhaps some rain returning to the forecast ( maybe a lot too ) as the region enters a cooler and more unsettled pattern around mid month. Otherwise, all is great / nothin to whine about in state 48.1 point

Here are some photos/video I took of it on December 27th. It looks stunning and is doing super well! Such an incredible palm, it's really gorgeous and has that awesome curving trunk, I love seeing coconuts thriving like this in SoCal, it just goes to show that coconuts really can do well in Southern California, more people definitely need to try them there!1 point
