This topic is not only for me - it is for my Brazilian friend, for Alberto. Well, after a dark winter, the little hybrid that find it´s way from Brazil to Germany seems to get more and more sick. No idea how to describe this better, but there was no growth, brown leaf apex etc. Okay, changing the mixture of the soil seems to be the only way to keep it alive. And what shall I say - IT WORKED. No sand anymore, just a lot of SERAMIS (special product here in Germany, mini form of foamed clay, normally used for hydro plants), mixture relation 50:50. Alberto, my friend - this is for you. And for all those who like the Lytos. ;-) Feel hugged.

another thing to think about is how government is always saying how they're looking out for the little guy and the lower class. well if they hinder the cheapest most efficient source of fuel how can the lower middle class drive to there jobs? when the president says "i want to see gas prices reach 4$ a gallon" (and now they have) how is that helping the middle and lower class? I know the reason behind it is to make hybrid cars and electric cars more apealing but lets face it, a person making a low income wage or a person who must drive a fare ways to get to work will be the ones who suffer the most.

So, I agree, this is similar to the cigarette hypocrisy. The government finds proof that something destroys you if you smoke it. The government finds proof that something destroys the world if you burn it. But it's OK to continue with both as long as there is a steady stream of tax money from both activities keeping the politicians fat and happy.

As much as man thinks it has dominion over this planet, nature always has the last word. It will correct this little human population explosion at some point, utilizing one means or another. At least that is my insignificant opinion on the matter.

and again no viable or realistic alternative to oil is offered up by Greenpeace etc.........I wonder if Greenpeace is using electric boat motors to go after those dastardly whaling ships? "Do as I say, not as I do" ...........comes to mind everytime one of these threads is started. Smacks of Socialism

Archonto purpurea I sprouted around 2004 in CA. (It currently has its first inflorescence!)

Here is my oldest palm that I grew from seed, and that's an honest truth. Took 19 years!

IHB, that is a great pic with all those coconut trees. My first thought was I'd like to live there. Ironically, the largest palm I've grown from seed is not a trunking palm. Sabal minor, from back when rarepalmseeds.com used to have a "cold hardy sample pack". So I have no idea which ecotype it is. It has done well for me. Chunk of concrete rubble is still there for scale. No current pic but it hasn't gotten much taller, just larger leaves. Fall 2010 Fall 2012

For pure size, my last washy before I installed it by the nursery entrance. These were not even fertilized the last few years as I tried to stunt their growth so they would not shade the nearby pindos otherwise they would be much larger. I think those are 5-6 years old (including the runts to the left of it) and the empty holes are some I sold around the same height as the large one- approx 14ft overall. I am very surprised they look that good after our last winter. I do have some windmills and pindos much older and close to the same height but few pics of them. I grow all my palms from seed and am dang proud of it.

What's with this rant? Why don't you just admit that you've got nothin' to show? What sets apart botanical artists from regular homeowner-landscapers is growing palms from seed. Phoenix reclinata, seed collected at LA Arboretum. No nursery has any reclinata with fronds that long and elegant, only available via seed propagation. Future bismarckia, silver and green types. Gene activation from local environmental conditions are only available to those that grow from seed.

Here's a couple coconuts I collected from Islamorada, Florida in 2010 and germinated in 2011. Starting to put some size on.
