The movie For A Few Dollars More was made in 1965 (49 years ago), one of my all-time favorites. I saw the movie for the first time in while serving in the US Navy during the late 1960s. I had no idea then that the movie was made in Spain (outdoor scenes) and not the American Southwest. When various scenes came up showing date palms, I remember thinking I had no idea such palms were growing in outlying desert locations near El Paso, Texas (during the civil war period, the time period that the movie was set in), and was intrigued by these palms. It was only about 10 years or so ago I learned these palms were actually growing in a desert region of Spain and were planted there for the movie Lawrence of Arabia (made in 1962).
At the link below, there are some then and now photos showing what the palms and the area around them look like. I'm sure many posters here have seen this classic movie and have noted these Phoenix dactilifera palms.
I was surprised to see that the palms really haven't grown all that much, nor does there appear to be any more (volunteers) around them. I guess they were not cross-pollenated and/or the environmental conditions there aren't conducive to propogation.
In any event, check out the photos if interested:
