  5. I have a pembana in my small cold frame that took 30F for 5+ hours with no damage at all, while a mayotte next to it was worthy of the green waste can. It's an odd palm which seems to tease us with cold hardiness, but there are still only a handful mature ones after being tried 15-20 years in SoCal.

  7. Your secret recipe is still rocking.

  8. Mike, That looks a lot more like the palm I got as Dypsis 'honkona'. My 'betafaka' has finer, droopier leaflets and is growing more or less distichously. They're both good growers and hardy, and both may end up being forms of decipiens, so not a big difference. Burt, I would put it into full sun. Matt

  9. In this photo you can see the betefaka through the freezer burnt fronds of my D. leptocheilos but the betefaka is still green.

  10. I have one that I planted as a one gallon. It has been in the ground for almost two years and has been slow so far. It is in full sun and exposed to the weather. I had frost twice this year and it went unscathed. It just opened a new frond and the next spear is already pushing. It showing some nice color too. This photo was taken in February after a good rain. I'll try and post an updated photo this weekend.

  11. It almost never exceeds 85, maybe a few days a year.Does it clump? I have very little info on this palm. It's not listed in POM. The roots are shooting out of the bottom, it seems to want more.

  12. Do you have any E. bubalinus pups left? If so, can you post any pics?

  13. Thanks Mikey! Any guesses on the last palm in post #2.

  14. Just having fun Bill. I need to get by your place soon. I haven't seen your yard since most of the planting began.

  19. Thanks everyone! I'll try to answer a few questions: quaman58- Mine has been pretty green since planting it but I have seen a few around that tend to yellow. I must have been lucky. Tassie_Troy1971- No Rhopalostylis planted out but I have a "chesmannii" in a pot waiting to be planted. Kim- I bought the onilahensis in 07 as a 5g then planted it in 08 as a 5g. Here is a pic when I bought it and a pic on the day it was planted. The onilahensis is the "white" palm furthest in the back. And just for giggles the front is the ambositrae and the middle is the ambo clumper. Happ I use apex palm plus around march/april then again around July. I think more importantly I compost annually and randomly throw worm castings and kelp on stuff.

  21. Nick, your palms look great unlike the yellow fronds on my trees this time of the year. Do you fertilize all winter?

  22. Absolutely outstanding collection, and they all look like winter must have been like summer. I am in awe... I must be doing something wrong in my garden, whoa. The onilahensis in post #7 is a jewel, one of my favorite palms. Can you tell us more about it? -- size when planted, how long in the ground now, etc.

  23. Steroids? Amazing, makes my place look like a nursing home rather than a nursery. I'm inspired to do better. I do have a Kerriodoxa larger than yours that I've never planted for fear it would die. I'm gonna find a spot and plant it.

  24. Randy, Do you have one with my name on it? Thanks, Aaron

  28. Nice Nick, love the Bentinickia. The Dypsis clumper is still a mystery. Jessie at JM even thought it might be a hybrid; possibly baronii x onilihensis. Sure is fast, though. Any problems keeping yours greened up? Bret

  36. I bought one from Matt 2 weeks ago, and planted it the same day. I pot-planted it with the bottom cut out. Except for right after planting it, I haven't had to water with all this rain. Looking forward to seeing it take off.
