What tool do professional tree pruners use to clean the boots off the trunk of Washingtonias? I have a bunch of W. robustas in my yard that I want to prune myself, but don't know what tool gets the best results. Anyone ever watch a professional clean a trunk?

I have begun the build out of a DREAM GARDEN for a client. I was given total creative freedom w/ the incorporation of a few preferences listed below based on the owner's lifestyle. I have not documented every step as there are far too many details. Property Description: Approx. 14K sq ft flat lot in the hills with city views. Owner Preferences: Formal Walkway. Incorporate his & hers sheds, & playground. No swimming pool or outdoor bbq/kitchen setups. Minimize lawn. Low maintenance garden. Deter gophers, ground squirrels and other small pests. Aesthetics | Contemporary Elegance. Philosophy | "You only live once."

I have a few W. filiferas (my robustas are still tiny) that are getting tall and I´ve cleaned them with a sharp machete, or a saw with a serrated edge. BUT...aren´t we supposed to leave the skirt on them? The old dead fronds covering the trunk is what makes them unique. I´ve trimmed them to get a better view of the garden and, at the height they are, about 5 or 6 meters (18 feet)a cleaner trunk adds to the visibility. Unless you live in Palm Springs, where it´s the law because of a fire hazard, why not leave the fronds in place? Peter

I am too, considering it was only 100 yards from the original find. Perhaps the PalmTalk members in SoCal could get in touch with the Ag Dept. and set up a hot line to report suspicious trees. Since you guys are always looking at the palms anyway, you may be able to spot trouble before their limited staff can.

Concrete finishing. Footings for pillars The house is not straight w/ the curb so I had to do some tweaks to the pillars to get them to look proper.

Another couple hundred ft of trench for running gas, electrical and rerouting water mains. All to code and at appropriate heights of course. It is only laid out this way while we do the plumbing. Trenches and footings dug for walls and pillars Demo guy chipped a foot of the driveway skirt so I had to replace the whole thing..

Here is a pic before the trenching. Ripped it.

This is the only way I'm going to remove lawn from now on. Regrading... now if I could only figure out how to do that back when I was in school. Trenching for slippers, water mains, irrigation and drains.

There were also 3 self seeded washingtonias beyond the property wall which was leaning because of the bougies... It felt really good to take them out. REALLY GOOD. AHHHHHH A clean slate/ fresh start.. couldn't we all use one? Here is a 106' trench that is being dug 2' deep for the new wall that separates this property from two neighbors below.

I really hate ficus trees. Beautiful but I've had too many issues removing them which is never a simple task. Owner wants to keep work shed on the left. Off to the left is some 20yr old bougianvillas and more fruit trees.

Front of the house w/ a hedge of rose bushes. The start of a 120' planter Entering the back yard. Here you can see various 20yr old trees.

The original tree WAS removed in late September. However, the discovery of another tree yesterday has not been removed yet. It also is infested with RPB. The tree is on private property and although it is essentially dead, the homeowner has not removed it yet. State officials cannot force the tree to be removed currently, but are suggesting it to the homeowner and they indicate that it might be removed by next week. Ron The new tree is about 100 yards from the other.
