For you Agave freaks out there, here's a few pictures of one of my Agave geminiflora that started to flower about a week ago. The flower is now 5 feet tall and is a nice shade of purple. It most likely signals the end for this plant, but only time will tell. I'm told that some A. geminiflora will divide after flowering and continue on, we'll see.

The rains arrived in force Sunday. Monday was non-stop rain until a break after dinner. We got 6"+ and much of it went into the canal system. So the Isabelle Canal flooded our dock and toyed with the lip of the seawall. I thought our back yard seemed quite photogenic despite dreary skies. From the east side of the shade garden looking west. Kentiopsis oliviformis beside path. What a great palm. I have 2. Middle of garden. Dypsis catechu dwarf on right center. Northwest corner. Dictyosperma album rubrum on right. View across walk at garden-in-process. Large palm is Dypsis pembana On seawall looking east at shade garden Another view to northeast. Queens against brooding sky. I know they are almost universally detested but these guys make my shade garden possible & we work hard to keep them healthy and lovely.

Looks just like your house! And yes, that would have to be a costume!

Hi Leo, I really love this Agave as well, very unique in the Agave world. I was really happy to see this, as it's my first to flower on this type of plant. It's interesting to see this small plant pump out such a huge flower stalk, at such a rapid pace. Matt

Stimulating action for a Superhero duo. Really.
  12. leomx
nice flower stalk but believe the plant itself it´s a beautie and seems like there are several around. I´ve also heard it´ll only divide after flowering and that´s a good thing I believe. leo.

I've never heard about this thing until today and I've already received several emails from all different sorts of people making these movies. So I bet the site is overloaded.

Nice dialogue flow, Matt. You could cut yours with Luke's and have a Hanna-Barbera winner! Also, agree with Kim, you can't say "activate" as a super-hero and then say, "where are you going in your green spandex pants?" Looking forward to more..

When my South Coast Palms nursery was young I would take out one or two of every palm I grew and plant it somewhere in the garden. After 10 years my mind started to fade. so I looked into signs for my garden. One day I was visiting Mardy Darian and noticed his nice signs (engraved laminated plastic plates attached to stakes). I asked where he had gotten them and was told he had traded some plants with the San Diego Zoo for them, and he was bummed because they didn't want to do that any more. I liked his signs, so I started my own sign business and have since made many signs for his garden, as well as 563 other gardens all over the US. See plantsigns.com if interested.

I suppose I should begin labeling the palms now, while I can still remember them... Nothing in the ground is labeled, only the potted stuff. Like Rafael, I had a map and a list, both woefully out of date at the moment. The metal tags seem by far the best, both durable and inobtrusive. In a really large garden that gets busloads of visitors, a more visible signage is useful.

Bill......you STILL have way toooooo much time on your hands. Get your house BUILT!!!! At least the guest bedroom for my next visit.
  23. Phil
Those metal tags shown below are probably the longest lasting of any tag. They are very good. If you write the name on a plastic plant stake, use a pencil, not a magic market or permanent pen. The pencil will far outlive the pen. But, with our doing many thousands of labels monthly, we just cannot hand write labels. Imagine potting up #250 labels of the same thing all day long. Staff gets really burnt out doing this. So, at least 15 years ago I bought a thermal printer. It prints about 100 labels in ten seconds. But, it is costly. Labels are shown below. They last at best 5 years. Phil
  24. Tassie_Troy1971
Wal i agree but when you are growing 3 different types of seedling Rhopalostylis labels are essential .
  25. Tassie_Troy1971
WOW = that Chatham island Rhopy is LOADED ! i can defiantely vouch that they have a very high germination rate we have around 200 baby seedlings down in Tasmania now from this palm .

Bob has all choice palms in his garden. No turds. Vince, you are well on your way to truly joining the dysfunctional palm family. I think most of us have but in many miles to get the palms we love.

Today I stopped by Pogos to get his expertise on transplanting a Cyphophoenix elegans. Brought the wifey so she can see one in person and not think I'm crazy for doing the deed. While there I snapped a few shots. Here are the two of them in the luscious, famed backyard. Here is the C.elegans up closer. Can't believe I'm gonna get one of these...so stoked Compare this with post 26. Here is the one in front of his home.

Not anything sophisticated. Though, we have killed 5 goldfish in the span of 2 weeks. At first, 2, then 1 more, then 2 more. It was a blood bath. Our family sucks with fish (unless they're the eating kind, of course).

The tank has one, but with this method the fish waste is meant to be absorbed into the soil, so an undergravel filter isn't needed. Diana Walstad recommends using no CO2 set up with her method, as that causes plants to take nutrients out of the soil faster than they can be replenished. An air bubbler can be used, but isn't needed, as if there are enough plants the fish will get enough oxygen. I'll get some pics up later today, as I'm still setting everything up. There are some wonderful pictures I've seen online of tanks set up like this though. Keith I had a salt water reef tank for many years. I keep telling my wife I want one again. We have collected shells and coral from beaches all over in anticipation of another reef tank, but have not got around to it yet. Someday... I have seen some really cool freshwater discuss tanks with lots of live plants. Dave
