I took a one day roadtrip to the Living Desert reserve in Palm Desert California. It is a two hour drive from San Diego which I like to visit every couple of years. It is a collection of plants and animals from all the deserts around the world, a fantastic place if you are in So Cal and have not been there. They also have a nature trail for five miles up a canyon where you can see lots of native wildlife. Here are a few photos from my trip, wish I could post many more but this is a taste. Desert

Jason: will you plant it outside? Kris: I am not in a dry climate, just near the sea, plenty of humidity (and besides that, there is the grass irrigation ), but everything is doing fine, even the dry climate palms (brahea armata, jubaea chilensis, sabal palmeto) Wow, your filifera is amazingly healthy.

And the holy grail, the largest and one of the only Livistona carinensis growing in the U.S. or outside of their habitat. This one is 20 years old.

Ravenea rivularis in the Madagascar garden. Can't believe they look this good in the desert.
