The worst case of scale on my Palmetto
by WSimpson- 1 follower

I had the worst case of scale on this Palmetto that I have ever seen on a Palmetto , which transformed it into a relatively ugly palm . My next-door neighbour is from Southern California so I try to grow pretty palms so he doesn't think I can't grow palms here . He probably thinks my Palmetto is ugly because of cold but in reality it is from the worst case of scale I have ever seen , and I googled " scale on Palmettos " , and there are no pictures of scale on Palmettos that looks as bad as the scale on my Palmetto . Anyway , I used a systemic and it cured the problem , but it will still take time for this Palmetto to look really nice again . It is growing really …

I’m curious if anyone on here has experience with ripening chamaerops seeds. I think these require male and female? They made seeds so I assumed maybe both parts were on one plant? Anyways it seemed like they were darkening up but then they stalled out so maybe they aren’t viable? I was excited about these because I planted this one last May and the first winter it saw 12 F and 3 days below freezing with no damage and only frost cloth protection. The other one I have had about 50% frond loss and is recovering. So I’m thinking the seeding one has good genes. Pictures below.

Hey planted my second palm today in ground (I planted sabal minor a couple weeks ago) it is a Mediterranean fan palm. I know it probably won’t grow here especially at that age without protection so I will protect it with those special Christmas lights and a frost cloth or a small homemade insulation box. how do you think it will do? I do have two windmill palms but not big enough to plant they probably will be planted next spring or fall. This is my first of many experiments I plan on trying a queen palm, sabal palmettos and fruiting edible bananas here in 7b Fairfax Va. if your in my area I would love to see your collection too!

Big box store finds 2025 1 2

I know it's a little early but some of the stores by me are starting to get some stuff in. I've seen these Trachys at two different Lowe's now ( League City and Livingston TX) but it looks like each store is only getting 2 because they both had the same Monrovia pallets with the same plants on them. I know Trachys aren't rare but these are the biggest I've seen at a big box. 6g, no price posted and sku doesn't pull anything up online. The Chamaedorea were also at the Livingston Lowe's on clearance. I'm almost positive they're Seifrizii and I've never seen Seifrizii sold in anything other than the big 7g that they have intermittently in the summer. These rang up …

Worried about my windmill!!!!
by MIKE82397- 18 replies

Just noticed my biggest windmill is looking kinda puny. The fronds are all closed up and just overall not looking like it’s usual self. I can only attribute it to the wet weather we’ve had recently although there’s been a fair share of sun as well. Not like days straight of rain but some rain every day and a few downpours. Not blistering hot yet although It was 98 here today and will get hotter as the week progresses. No others palms seem to exhibit this condition. Newer spears seem ok. Gave it a dose of h202. Any other suggestions or thoughts on what has happened? Thanks

I started my “palm garden” in 2024 after moving to a new home. I wanted to make a thread to share some pics and posts as I go. first, my hurricane cut palmetto. Fully unprotected. Showing hurricane cut pics after install, and 1 year out. Home weather station read 12.9F this year as the low. Maybe 5 times total sub 20F. Honestly, most the brown on it was there at end of summer. Very little damage noticed. second group - 1 year of growth on my L. Nitida. Now in-ground as of March. will show my other nitida later. I love these things, and want them to work so bad. Fingers crossed. Then, some windmills. Palmettos are my love. so the windmills fee…

HELP! My Bismarks are dying

I purchased these 2 Bismarks from the greenhouse (originally from Florida) on June 8th, 2025 and they were gorgeous. 10 days later they look like this. The temperatures have been 15 degrees and warmer. Not a lot of rain but I lightly watered them 3 times in 10 days. Can anyone suggest what happened? I think they have died. How do I rehab them? I'm sure most people who view the forums have probably seen this palm pop up before and I'll be heading out to see the palm in person sometime soon but the building was torn down and thankfully they didn't remove the palms, but the filibusta/filifera will be really taking the test of winter this year without that extra heat from the side wall! It's free standing now and I'm nervous for it but I hope it makes it! Just thought I'd give an update on it since I think it's the biggest I think in Fayetteville unless somebody is hiding more somewhere else I'm also glad they didn't remove any of the sabals because that would be a such a crime because of how slow they grow a…

Sabal minor “clump??”
by MIKE82397- 1 follower

Just purchased a couple 7g minors. Nice looking plants but it looks to me that they are 3 or 4 individual plants in the pot as there are multiple spears. Is this normal for a plant this size? Don’t think trying to seperate would be advisable but what would be the result if planted? A huge entanglement of massive minor or a couple nice specimens to add to the collection.

I noticed this palm at the Columbia airport years ago , and forgot about it until recently when I was coming back from a trip. I have heard that the hooks can be the result of boron deficiency… maybe, I don’t know, however the butia 10’ away doesn’t display these hooks. This butia looks pure butia to my untrained eyes , however it has displayed these hooks for nearly the 10 years since I first noticed this palm. Im not sure that hooks can definitively rule in Jubaea blood in a cross. Interested to hear others thoughts on this.

Sabal Mexicana sprouts

Ok ok ok. After a lesson from Master Palm Jedi @happypalms I think these are ready to be taken out of the baggie. I'll leave the rest in there, but these are gonna get Solo cups just like the Bermudana. Anyway, my question - How soon can these handle bright light? Now would be an ideal answer, but it is what it is and I obvs want them to live. I'd prefer to put them in the Palm Condo™(a wire rack with bright LED bulbs) just because I have more space there and I need to move taller stuff out, but I can make room for them in the Future Spider Mite Factory©, which gets much lower light. I originally had some Bermudana in a window and some in the Spider Mite Fact…

East Mississippi Bucket List

Ok, we're just spitballing here until life improves, but after watching a few YouTube videos and reading posts on here, I'm throwing together a bucket list of stuff for the yard that won't melt in winter. Trachys! Fortuneis are cheap enough, but I want a Waggy too. And some Princeps. Acoelorrhaphe wrightii - full sun? Swamp lover? Marginally cold hardy? Thorns to keep cats away? I'll take a dozen. Sabals Sabals Sabals. I've got sprouts, I've got seeds, I've got seedlings, I'll have plenty of Sabals in like 10 years. A Butia would be a gamble but they look so nice. I've got 2 different Brahea seeds and some Thrinax Anthocoma on the mats, I don…

As we start the countdown to the summer solstice here in Maine, every year I trim the windmill of its flowers before they make a mess and help promote frond growth. Mulch the gardens and even though it never ends I give the lawn a good trim to welcome the summer months (hopefully no drought). figured I’d share the progress and here’s a few pictures of this years landscapes windmill before trim, and after,

Sabal Louisiana inflorescences vs Sabal minor :
by WSimpson- 4 replies
I always said that the inflorescences on my Sabal Louisiana was shorter than on my Sabal minor , and an indicator of the differences , but I'm thinking differently now . Now that I have fertilized my Louisiana last April , for the first time in a number of years , it seems that the Louisiana inflorescences are a lot taller this year , and similar in height to Sabal minor . What do you think ? I wonder if they stay stiffer and don't fall over like Minors do ? Will
