Rodent eradication worked! Rats took over and ate plants and native animals nearly to extinction. This might offer hope in other places, too.

by Silas_Sancona- 3 replies

It took a few years but finally made my return to what i consider to be the biggest signal of spring, - in the desert at least - Each year, as January ends, and February arrives, thousands of Rock, Gem, and Fossil geeks from across the country and world converge upon dozens of venues spread out across Tucson to admire, learn about, and purchase tens of thousands of pieces of rock mined from across the globe.. Some quite simple and inexpensive ..others costing as much as a new car -or more- Adding to this, various vendors from across the globe attend some of the different shows to sell other art - related items, so, you not only get a mental education in eve…

A great story discussing how populations of Sceloporus occidentalis, the ubiquitous and always charming Western Fence Lizard, which reside in human altered environments are demonstrating rapid evolution- driven changes in response to the unique range of challenges they face in such places.. https://californiacurated.com/2024/10/08/the-western-fence-lizard-the-world-of-scaly-sunbathing-acrobats/ An interesting side note: the real time adaptive strategies noted in " urban " Western Fence Lizard populations, may also be occurring within city dwelling populations of both Ornate Tree Lizard, Urosaurus ornatus and Desert Spiny Lizard, Sceloporus magister here in AZ…

What a beautiful place to live
by happypalms- 1 reply

The town I grew up in Coffs Harbour is beautiful town. When growing up it only had a population of 12000 people. A town known for fishing timber and farming and tourism back in the day. Now it’s become to crowded and busy for me to live there I have a property about 50 kilometres north living halfway between Coffs and Grafton so the best of both worlds as they say. A place well known for some of our fabulous beaches.

A killer of a wasp in the garden
by happypalms- 2 replies
When working in the garden there are certain hidden little dangers that lurk either biting or stinging. And if these guys get you you’re in trouble they hurt. I did get stung the other day three times on the face two on the lips and the other near the eye let’s just say Botox treatment was not required that day that’s for sure (not that I do Botox) but omg it hurt for hours right into the next day. The problem is they love nesting under palm leaves and cycads two of my favourite plants in the garden and there’s quite a few places to nest. As soon as you disturb the nest and by the time you have worked out what’s going on it’s to late and you run and there after you. Bees …

The property where Dick Douglas created one of the most significant hardy palm gardens in California is for sale. It's in Walnut Creek, just down the road from the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Dick and Ruth were friendly and exchanged plants. Many of the older palms in the public Ruth Bancroft Garden originated with Dick. The current owner renovated the house to great effect, and did an excellent job maintaining and improving the garden. Let's hope whoever buys it appreciates the garden. Collard kingfisher bird at work near the dam
by happypalms- 0 replies

While not quite a David parish photograph of a kingfisher considering an I phone without a zoom lens. It’s still a picture of baby kingfisher who was being taught to fish by one of its parents. It was amazing to watch (yes I was working at the pump today) the parent darting in and out of the water. A smaller relative of the kookaburra bird a true fisherman (or woman) of a bird and such a beautiful to see as well when fishing for bass I have seen them flying along the creek and sitting perched watching for fish darting into the creek catching fish.

The goog old potting bench
by happypalms- 0 replies
Pretty well much if grow plants you need an area you can work your plants in for repotting or just general plant maintenance. You end up with hundreds of pots and trays of al, sorts of sizes to suit your cultivation needs. Space is the utmost importance with the bench itself having everything on hand with easy access to various size containers. You also need to get your soil there (in bulk in my case) along with access to water. Plus you need it close to where you intend on growing the plants. You need it be dry so your soil will pour into the containers well and it’s handy to work on a rainy day when the plants won’t get stressed in the heat. But without it you pretty w…

Landscaping with the tractor
by happypalms- 0 replies

Putting the tractor to good use with what materials I have on hand. Doing a bit of landscaping with the rocks from property and the 30 cubic meters of topsoil my neighbour kindly supplied with his truck and excavater. It’s amazing what you can do with machinery given a good operater and time. The raised bed in question will get planted out with Kerriodoxa and Johannesteijsmannia and perhaps a few cerotazamia subroseophylla or a few other Zamias I have been purchasing. A fun day ahead soon planting it out.

Found these old pictures in the vault omg it’s amazing what a bit of work can do. Over time it has been a project and a half that’s for sure. It’s been close to five years since I started my palm nursery and it’s a growing affair that’s for sure. Most of my stock has been started from seeds, slowly iam starting to see a bit my labour grow into something that I can either sell or plant out. I also have purchased palm sprouts and seedlings as well sent mostly bare rooted. My personal collection of palms some I had from years ago and recently with online plants for sale, I have increased my personal collection along with seed purchased to propagate for my collection. It all …

A visit to the beach the other I could see the corindi range where my property is The first picture of the mountain on the far left of screen closets to the edge is where my property is located. I get the ocean influence that helps create my unique microclimate that lets me get away with growing so many varieties of palms in my collection. Combined with black sandy soil and sandstone rocks in my soil it’s a unique spot with a great microclimate for a subtropical garden to be situated in. It’s amazing what you can create living in the mountains. You can have suburbia on your own for me I prefer the peace and quiet of bush living in the mountains beyond the sea in a …

RE-doing the greenhouse
by DoomsDave- 1 follower

My greenhouse, actually a giant cold frame, was erected circa 2012, and now it's rotting. The basic structure was made of pressure treated lumber; the parts that didn't get or stay too wet have held up well, while those that got and stayed wet have rotted, in some cases almost to nothing. So, I'm going, if I can, to replace the horizontal shelves with stainless steel. Mesh is available from a local metals dealer for 6 dollars a pound, which will get expensive. Some have suggested shelves from old refrigerators, which I'll look into. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences? Thanks!
