Something Positive 1 2
by PALM MOD- 77 replies

Let's salvage something positive out of this disastrous California weather. While the effects of the recent cold snap are still fresh in everyone's mind, let's try to document some info about the cold tolerence of various palms. Especially some of the newer introductions that may not have much of a track record. This will be far from scientific. However, it may be useful. Let's try and keep it data oriented, as there are many threads already describing the grief and horror of this devastating weather. Feel free to post pics to help document, or mention if you are referring to a small or mature specimen, or other relevant info. Add other palm species, or post your expe…

What to do with this info? 1 2
by PALM MOD- 47 replies

Now that we are getting all this great info, what do we do with it? Should we allow it to stay open, and let those in Texas or Florida contribute, if/when they get zapped? Should we try to condense it, and try to create our own Hardiness Guide to Palms? What do you all think?

Matt and Everyone, FYI --- I have switched the default sorting in this forum to sort topics alphabetically per Matty's suggestion. Please be aware that the options for sorting are always available on all the forums at the bottom of the page. You can sort topics in any number of ways. Alphabetically by topic, topic starter, last poster, etc. Or chronologically by last post, topic start date, etc. Check it out. So if you prefer checking for the most recent additions, just sort that way, by last post, from the botton menu.

Bad news related to my Sabal Palmetto: Today, about 2 months after the Texas freeze, palmageddon, I noticed some tiny flies around palm's crown. I spread old fronds stems wider and pulled on the spear harder... and here it happened: I pulled the spear. The spear was light brown in the middle and white soft at the bottom. I poured copper Python 27 solution with a little of neem oil and insecticide inside. The palm was healthy and thriving before the freeze... I don't know how much hope I should have. S.

It's been 3 weeks since the cold event and we've had periods of high rainfall and a week in the 80s. Even today I had new damage appear since we had heavy rain yesterday and today. All of my palms have been planted between Feb 2024 and June 2024, with a few outliers. So none of my palms were truly established. The coldest night was 19F and temps were below freezing 13-14 hours total. 35 palms in ground 17 remain undamaged as of today 18 damaged with 2 spear pulls and 2 confirmed kills Undamaged list 2 small Trachycarpus fortunei 4 small Chamadorea radicalis 4 Rhapidophyllum hystrix 1 Serenoa repens "silver" 2 …

Snow made Sylvester’s turn brown
by Chris J- 3 followers

Hello everyone. A couple of weeks ago here in south Georgia. We got about 3 to 4 inches of snow and freezing temperatures at night as low as 20°. About a week later after the snow was gone my two Sylvester trees were completely brown. I’ve noticed a couple of miles from me someone has Sylvester’s and theirs only have a little browning versus mine. My Sylvester’s are completely brown. I have a picture attached. By the looks of my picture, can anyone tell me if my Palms are still alive? Or is there anything I need to do? I would appreciate advice from anyone that can help. Thank you.

First post here! Here are these 4 species after a low of -4.9°C (23.2F) with no protection. Only Caryota has a Tipuana canopy (whose leaves fried but did just fine except for that). I really thought all of them would fry at those temps but did pretty well after all. Any thoughts on this? I'm about to try some 1-year-old Ravenea rivularis seedlings that I will keep in pots right next to my house under a fleece until they grow to see how they do. Low temps here can get that cold but this last winter was the coldest ever, where we had two consecutive nights getting down to 23.2F and 24F. Max temperatures those days were over 54F which I gue…

Mobile (AL) damage report

Here are a few photos of the palms and cycads that were affected by the cold wave January 21&22 in Mobile. I recorded 13°F and my next door neighbor recorded 11° so maybe we'll just split the difference and call it 12°. I'm on the northern fringe of the city, so I'm sure waterfront properties and Dauphin Island fared a bit better. All plants pictured were in the ground and unprotected. Chamaedorea microspadix looks a bit put out but I think it'll bounce back. Livistona chinensis. Taller specimens downtown are completely brown. Mule palm (from Mule Palms of Mississippi), shot from upstairs window. It's been ugly for two years now beca…

2025 freeze south mississippi
by OutpostPalms- 2 replies

Just wanted to share how my palms made out. I have 2 Bismarkias, 2 jelly palm, 4 medium sized Washington robusta, and 8 young robustas. In January 2025 we set an all time record low temperature of 15 degrees F (-9C) here along the Mississippi coast. It was also accompanied by the first significant snow in a generation as 7 inches fell on us. This was preceded and followed by a couple nights of 20-25F temps. In a pinch I realized I need to try and protect some of the trees. For the bismarkias I took 2 stakes and put them in the ground and then double trash bagged them with Christmas lights going inside. For the larger robustas they were fully expos…

So far not much frost. Only thing noticeable is a decent size bottle palm with frosty spotted lower fronds. Anybody else have issues? Arecas, Christmas, bananas, coconuts, royals all look good so far.

Palm Damage Report

Now that it’s early March, and the temperatures are starting to get warmer, I can finally document all the damage on the palms I protected that saw -5°F. 1. Needle Palm: Only thing that I saw wrong with it is the oldest frond dying off, which probably doesn’t even count as cold damage on the main plant. One of the suckers, who were a bit unprotected, had minor tip burn, and that’s it. (pic from 3-05) 2. Sago Palm: the Cycad had only been defoliated. I can’t tell if there is any other damage besides that, since the base is still fine and not mushy, and the growing point isnt rotten or anything. (pic from 3-5) 3. Sabal Louisiana: Definitely the wo…

The one in my backyard was protected for both freezes, but it was protected differently for each one. The first one, which saw a low of 18.1F, it was fully protected. The second, which saw a low of 23F, had only the trunk and spear area protected. The fronds were left out in the open. The fronds have shown no sign of cold damage, not even spotting. Will continue to monitor and provide updates as needed. I protected it in some way for both freezes as the cold hardiness with these is not widely known. As it gets bigger ill allow it to be exposed to deeper freezes to experiment.

Do you have any plants (palms or not) that have surprised you with their resilience to the cold so far this winter? Any plants that you accidentally left outside unprotected maybe, or perhaps you just decided they will be left on their own this winter and yet they've made it just fine? For me it's Albizia moluccana. I have some tiny seedlings, no more than an inch tall, which have been left outside. Despite their age and the fact that they are tropical trees from the equator, they look fine and even keep growing. True, they haven't seen anything lower than 3 C (37 F), but it's still a surprise for me. A new cold wave has just started here and it will last for few d…

Sabal Domingenisis in Clarksburg, Maryland

Sabal Domingenisis faces west, growing inbetween two Sabal minors (North Carolina ecotype.) They grow in between two homes and garages, wind from north west creates a wind tunnel but it’s usually slightly sheltered in general. We had the snow and it stayed below freezing for many days at a time. The lowest we got during the cold snap was 17f in the day, 3f that night. Coldest, it was, recorded: 7f, 3f 5f 9f nighttime lows I’d guess the daytimes were in between 17-26f It seems to be rougher than other years but remember the snow cover insulated the roots for a few weeks. Here are 2 early fall pictures Now here’s two photos I took 15 minutes ago: Thanks for reading !

Floridians have theirs, South Cal have theirs (aka Palmpedia), time for those of us who live in North California (or in similar climates across the globe, like the northern Mediterranean coast) to make a freeze damage record. I guess most of this region belongs to the zones 9a to 10a with rainy winters. It would be useful to see how different species react to the freezes we get. So, if you have had frosts/freezes in your garden, please let us know how your plants have fared. Palms or not. Later I will combine everything in a spreadsheet. Please write temperatures, species of plants and observed damage. Personally, I cannot contribute anything yet as our winter h…

No damage noted on trunking specimens. Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. No overhead canopy.

Although there is some data already compiled here, I think it is simpler to look up each species or hybrid separately. 27.7°F - no damage after 3 weeks. One in the ground (2 gal.) and a 1 gal. still in the pot. Both without any canopy or other protection. Tom Birt - Casas Adobes, AZ Hi 63°, Lo 32°
