April Fools Day episode of NAME THAT PALM!!!

It's not a Green Malayan Dwarf, or a Hawaiian tall, or a Yellow Panama, or any common Cocos nucifera. Today's grand prize winner will receive a Green malayan dwarf coconut ( choice of sprouted or not) OR some free seed (USA shipping only) from something else I've got seed of unless they want to wait for this years seed. If the winner doesn't want a coconut or some seed I'll send some to anyone they choose who can be shipped to in the USA. I've been self quarantined over a month along with everything I use for shipping because I'm a very high risk person so no need to worry about disinfecting everything inside my package, just wipe off the outside of the package and you'r…

Cleaning Crinata seeds
by bdaalex- 1 reply

Hi, have some cocothrinax crinata seeds that I’m not really sure how to prep for germination. I believe they are still in the “fruit”, which is very tough and difficult to remove. I tried with one and damaged it. Pic of a fresh and the damaged seed below. They don’t seem like they need more but an old post in the potted forum indicated they would. Any tips? Both cleaning and general best practice for germination of this type.

Burretiokentia hapala inflorescence
by Tracy- 1 reply

Whenever I look up photos of Burretiokentia hapala inflorescence they all look pretty much the same in structure; that they branch near the base stick out and have varying degrees of wiggles much like what the one below. I've seen plenty in person that look the same. But not one of mine. I posted photos of the other one in a different thread I had started but due to the subject matter being different I didn't hear responses from others if it fell with the "normal" or typical spectrum. This is what I expect from a Burretiokentia below:

palm weevil borer spray ?
by doranakandawatta- 4 replies
in "Palms" march 2016, "Carpoxxylon palm in the Townville Palmetum, Australia" , I can read that the Carpoxylon avenue receives an annual application of palm weevil borer spray. After we lost two beautiful Bismarckia in Doranakanda gardens within 2 months, and if it is an annual application, I would like to be able to do this application. Can some one give more information? is this spray available for private gardens too? Many thanks. Philippe

After collecting cleaning these, now ready to germinate, I'm using community pots for these babies. If you have experience in germinating these, like to hear your thoughts.

value of a 9 foot tall beautifully vareigated Caryota mitis?
by cycadjungle- 2 replies
I was thinking about putting this in the for sale forum, but I'm not trying to sell this now. I have this 9 foot tall palm that next year, will be too tall for my 12 foot tall greenhouse. Any ideas on how much something like this should go for? I will probably put it outside next spring to get it even taller, but then, at the end of next year, it won't fit in the greenhouse and I'm not going to build a taller greenhouse just for this plant, even though it is my favorite palm right now. Just curious, Tom

Help me ID my mislabeled palm

I ordered a Syagrus cearensis about 3 years ago on Ebay. It came as a double strap-leafed seedling and the 2 looked very much the same. Until a year later I noticed it didn't quite look right. One of the palms was starting to go palmate. I removed the one that was obviously a syagrus and so this one remained as a mystery. I'm thinking Sabal? I'm from Arizona so I'm used to seeing Sabals of this size so I could be way off base. I have a S. urseana about the same age and it doesn't look anything like this. It's hard to tell from the picture, but when it's in the shade the tops of the leaves are a dark blue-green which is something I'm also not accustomed to seeing in palms …

New Palm Fronds Browning (potted)
by romeyjdogg- 13 replies

Hello all, I just received a very nice Butia Jubaea x Queen from Patrick and I planted it in a large pot until I figure out where I want to put it in the ground. I used bagged soil from the Ground Up called The Seasons Bed Mix. Says it's compost and angular sand, so I assume well draining. When potting, I also added a few handfuls of Microlife 8-4-6 slow release fertilizer. I've been watering every 2nd or 3rd day and the pot is located in a spot that gets some direct sun and some filtered sun, but not full sun. Temps are low-mid 90s. Any ideas on why the fronds are starting to brown up? I just got a soil monitor and it's showing 10/10 for…

On a post Christmas trip to the local grocery store we spotted this great bargain and snapped it up. At first I wasn't sure if it was a Cocos fibrosa or Cocos crinata, but on further study, I'm pretty sure that it is a Cocos St. Nicholas. Any way, we clearly have our Christmas tree for next year... gmp

Largest Phoenix canariensis in Dublin
by IrishPalm22- 0 replies

Are there any larger CIDP in Dublin that anyone knows of? I know Dublin isn’t Tresco, but I was very impressed to find a story and a half tall CIDP on Kenilworth Road in Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6/6W (attached). I also spotted a very robust little one on Lombard St west in City Centre (smaller one here attached). I note that compared to last year, two small Canaries right outside Saint Patrick’s Cathedral have nearly doubled in size. I think this winter was a colder 9B in Dublin, but who knows with urban microclimates. If anyone knows of any larger around, do let me know. The amount of smallish but fast growing Canaries around Dublin astonishes me. Thanks for looking 😎.

Hello I’m wondering if I can successfully plant in the area pictured below...these ficus have destroyed other areas of my soil. All the green is creeping fig but it’s planted on the other side of a hidden wall... Behind the gate - 8 feet away are 3 x ficus nitida, will these strangle anything I try to plant in this area? Thanks!

Such an elegant palm especially when it discards an old leaf sheath. Had a bit of cover when it was young, but now gets much more sun. B. vieillardii, hapala, and grandiflora all seem to have similar growth rates in the garden. Tim
