Tiny white worms coming out of old palm seeds (that were in soil for a couple of years) in water while the seeds are still sinking to the bottom that were in the soil for a couple years and did not germinate yet. Are those seeds bad? If so why do they sink?

Tipping King or is it termites?
by happ- 4 replies

Subterranean termites are active in this area. Also have erosion problems when it rains heavily [quite irregular this winter]. Should I begin termite treatment around these archontophoenix alexandrae? One is leaning within 8 inches of the house. It seems well rooted and has gone through several high wind events [65-85mph]. So I don't think I am in danger, right? The 3rd photo is root of a dead ficus tree destroyed in 2009 windstorm.

TIPS & TRICKS WITH NEW UPGRADE
by PALM MOD- 1 reply

Here is a place to list any new features, tricks, or things of interest you may discover pertaining to the new upgrade. 1) As previously noted elsewhere - email address can be changed from "Account Settings" in the Profile Area drop down menu. (Appears to be a bug - if you click on "change" and then decide not to, you have to re-enter old address, save and then reconfirm (a hassle) - or better to just leave PalmTalk and start over. 2) Also previously noted: Topic and Post options (like edit) are now located top right corner in post - click on the "three dots" for options.

Tips for a noobie palmer

Hi folks, I've lurked a bit on here and enjoyed the conversation and photos - I have learned a lot! I was hoping for some advice with respect to growing my Dypsis pembana seeds. I started by filling a tray with perlite, spreading the seeds out and then used a layer of spagnum moss. I then misted it with water, and put the lid on (see photo). Fast forward a few days, and the moss is starting to look a little moldy... so I replaced the moss with a small layer of palm/cactus soil. Fast forward a couple of days, and that's starting to get moldy! So I simply took the lid off, but I'm worried about whether I've killed the seeds now. Getting all my newbie mis…

Tips for cutting off suckers

Can anyone provide tips for cutting off suckers? The species I have are Chamaerops, Acoelorrhaphe, and Trithrinax campestris. With the Chamaerops every time I cut off the suckers they just grow back. Is there a way to cut off the sucker so it does not keep growing back? With Acoelorrhaphe, when I cut off a sucker it sometimes makes the other large head nearby die. Is there a way to cut off the suckers without affecting the health of the other heads? I.e. can I apply some anti-fungus or antiseptic of some sort to the wound? With Trithrinax both of the above seem to happen, the whole palm seems to go into poor health but when it finally recovers the head…

Tips for Dypsis leptocheilos x decaryi seedlings?
by Cocoa Beach Jason- 0 replies

I just received some Dypsis leptocheilos x decaryi "tribear" seedlings and would appreciate any advice you would give to a novice on how to get these little guys growing best. I want their survival odds to be maximized. The seedlings are just off the seed and they have two little leaves. I am in a 10a Florida barrier island climate about five blocks from the ocean (extremely hot and wet summer/ dry and mild winter with occasional random cold snaps into the low 30's a few times a year). I have been told to keep them dry and in the shade for the best chance. I was told that dypsis like to dry out. Alternatively I have also been told that the teddybear palm loves water so…

Tips for Leucothrinax morrisii
by Phoenikakias- 2 replies

I need any tips that would probably cause seedlings of this sp grow faster, beside of course warmth and sun shine. How about (for example) deep pots, special soil requirements, increased air humidity etc? For the time being seedlings are still with only the eophyll and I am glad that I am not long sighted, otherwise it would be difficult for me to observe them growing, so tiny are they!

Hello! My CIDP finally sprouted yesterday, 8 weeks after seed put to soil. What to do next? I replaced it from the bathroom to the kitchen under a led light hanging 15cm above. Any tips for keeping the conditions optimal? Fertilizer, moisture, general tips etc Thanks!

I'm planting out 3 gallon specimens of both species this weekend. Will they be fine in full sun? I will be planting them right by sprinklers, so they'll get watered daily. Can I hear about cold tolerance too? I know they can be affected by the cold, but I also know there are plenty of blue latans in my town (maybe not as far inland as I am though). Please dump your knowledge and experience here, FL Latania growers! I'm a zone pusher - I have Eucalyptus deglupta, Corypha utans, Elaeis guineensis, Dypsis cabadae, Dypsis leptocheilos, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, and several other Zone 10 plants fully established in my yard and surviving light to moderate frosts with littl…

I've got 3 different Adonidia palms of various maturity levels and I noticed just today that the tips are turning yellow on all 3 of them? It's not on all fronds and not necessarily just the oldest fronds. Some of the oldest fronds don't have any yellowing. Any ideas? I fertilize a light dose of PalmGain once a month and water 1 or 2 times a week depending on heat. I'm in Georgia. It's been cooling down to the 70s at night and humidity has been lower. Could this be the cause? Thanks, Tim

tips to germinate Phoenix rupicola
by palmhort- 1 follower
I just sowed some Phoenix rupicola seeds and REALLY want them all to germinate. I read that you should not soak them for more than 24 which I followed. I have them all together in a pot with a thin layer of well draining soil and a piece of Saranwrap on top with some vent holes. This is placed on a warming mat in a greenhouse which has heat and set on 70 degrees with a humidifier. I'm concerned that I should not have the Saranwrap on top and thinking it will cause them to rot...am I right? Any other advice would be great appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

The new forum doesn't yet have any pics of one of my favorite genera. New leaf on Calytrocalyx albertsiana. Edit: Please note, I blew it. This is really C. archboldiana. Edit-Take two: I continue to blow it. If you read on you'll learn C. archboldiana is now C. lauterbachianus. How does one delete an entire thread?

Tis a sad day for my coconut. (My baby)
by GottmitAlex- 19 replies

Well, I woke up this morning to a sad sight: The rodents which tried to make a nest in the base of my baby (my first coconut. 6 and a half years old) late last fall (autumn), killed it. Fronds collapsed as if the beetle got the best of it. But this wasn't the beetle. Rodents (I believe mice, coming from the neighbors yard) munched on the side of the base of the palm. They didn't get to the heart of the palm but almost. 5 months later, well, here are the pics. I still have 3 coconuts left (one green Malayan dwarf and two pacific golden talls. One of which is still a baby). One Alfie and a D. Plumosa. You may ask yourselves: "why wa…

Tissue culture

Has anyone been succesfull using tissue culture to propagate cycads or palms when seed is unavailable? I have just started researching this as a possible way to obtain the rare encephalartos and other cycads that I can not buy seed for. It would be helpfull to hear of anyones experience with tissue culture of palms or cycads. Here are a few links I have found so far. Sterilization and the correct media seems to be the key. http://litzlab.ifas.ufl.edu/cycprot.htm http://www.kitchenculturekit.com/index.htm Andy

Tissue Culture of Palms & Cycads

Howdy! I know this had been brought up before. But is it correct that Date palms have successfully been tissue cultured? Also, I was under the assumption that you had to use the meristem? Basically killing the palm. Regardless, I am interested in working with a tissue culture company, if it’s possible. I have some things in mind. Also, what about cycads?

Hello Jack, Jeff, whomever else has recently travelled palm observation wise to Madagascar recently. To you too Bruno I pose these simple questions. I think I tried to ask under the previous site. Do people grow palms on their own properties/yards within the towns and/or farms etc. ? If so, what species do they grow ? Is there any foreign palms growing around the place, town or country, such as Syagrus, Archontophoenix etc etc. ? Just curious as others may be.

Hi all Kmart has 3 Linospadix monostachyos (walking stick palms) for sale. Never expected Kmart to offer anything outside of the standard range of palms. But was surprised to see these. The tag describes one of the plants requirements as needing a warm and humid environment. This is not Adelaide's environment type. So asking the question here if anybody is sucsecfully growing this palm in a similar environment to ours? Or should I just buy it and treat it the same as my Rhapis excelsa? Hopper
