sat aug.11 mattyb & i journeyed to dypsis deans leucadia garden.the purpose of our trek was twofold:first to give a garden tour to justin(itinerant carny & one-time jmusic employee) & his alleged brother jusitn(if that is his REAL name),& second to rip from the fecund earth one of deans prized palms,a licuala spinosa.god only knows the deep, dark secrets mattyb uncovered & threatened to unleash that led to deans surrender of this cherished specimen.lets watch the drama unfold... matts wife uses ALOT of bleach in the laundry, thats why he has to wear sunglasses all the time.NOT to look cool. cool patterns in the emergent spear.it could've be…

Well O.K., as a seedling they grow about as fast as Continental Drift; You'd be lucky to progress one into a 15 Gallon container in the 1st five years of life. Once they get going in the ground though, they can grow very quickly. I thought I'd post some progression photos of mine, which is planted as the centerpiece of my front yard. Here are the photos of planting day- 1-31-03----

To each your own on taste and preference in particular palm species used in the landscape. Triangle Palms (Dypsis Decaryi) is hideous. It looks like it came off the side of a dirt road covered in dust suffering from a fungal disease on it’s mutated/bludgeoned crownshaft. I prefer my Bismarckias and Archontophoenix thank you opinions anyone?

Red colored bismarckia 1 2 3 4

I have an orange-red leafed bizzie. Not purple, but red. In order to get a sense of the spectrum of genes in bismarckia and find some clones that might like our Tasmanian-style mild but coolish climate that features Summer lows as chilly as 42F, I planted a half dozen of them from distinct sources and age groups. If they all get huge I've got a big problem, but the idea is that nature would do some selection (with some of my help - ugly ones would get the ax.) When I shopped around last Spring, I came across one 15 gallon specimen that had orange-red leaves, not purple ones. For kicks, I went ahead and bought it because I was curious. During the Summer, it put out…

Yesterday completely saturated with super bowl hype, Bubba and I set out to explore a local garden. We had heard rumors about the garden and actually drive by it on a daily basis but never stopped in to explore. After spending more than 2 hours there, we realized there was more there than we could appreciate in one visit. The garden is a little under 2 acres and has over 300 species of palms. Here are few photos... kentiopsis oliviformis livisonia chinensis veitchia arecina bismarkia noblis

The 12th Annual Spring Searle Brothers' Plant Extravaganza! 1 2 3 4

I had my eyes glued to the weather forecast all week long leading up to the first day of the Extravaganza, and it was slowly painting a cold picture. We knew it was going to be cold, almost a record cold for my area of Broward county. As I sat freezing and shaking on my way to the nursery, the radio sputtered weather info and stated that as of the high 30's we had received this morning; it was officially the worst winter in S. Florida in over 40 years. As if we didn't know that already. My mind wandered to how many people would be waiting at the gate this morning as I drove up to the entrance, noticing that the canals appeared to be smoking... - Friday, 6:56AM: A year …

Melbourne Heat/Drought Damage 2009 1 2 3 4

Hi All, We are now into the 12th year of this drought and with water restriction - still. We had a heatwave lasting four days. The temperatures peaked at 45.1C (113.2F) with our first ever occurrence of three consecutive days over 43C (109.4F). This, combined with the fact that we are severely restricted in our ability to water, humidity down to 5% and there's been no rain in about a month has led to some damage and loss. I have lost about 10 palms completely with others showing browning off. I took some pics of palms around my neighbourhood. Here we go: Toasted Howea forsteriana:

This fungi is native to most Florida soils. Unfortunately it attacks the roots and lower 4' - 5' of Palm trunks. Also called butt rot, it essentially kills off the cells which carry water and essential nutrients to the crown of the palm. I inadvertently sparked this cancerous pathogen when I trimmed a thicket of Dypsis lutescens down to a neat and tidy 12 heads. This opened pores of cut trunks allowing the airborn spores to get in. Now, all but three heads are gone. After numerous storms, other clustering palms had broken trunks which had to be cut and removed. Ptychosperma is prime. Many of my clustering Ptychosperma are gone. For those of you unfamiliar …

An Update on a Few of My Palms 1 2 3 4

Due to a login issue, I haven't been on in a couple months but fortunately that issue is now resolved and I am glad to be back. I am sending these three coconuts (two of which are my favorites) down to live at my parent's house on the water in Port Charlotte. My mom wants leaning, full-crowned coconut palms and the two on the left are Jamaican tall apparently from seed brought from Jamaica in the 1930s. The one on the right is, I am guessing, a Maypan hybrid and hopefully will have robust characteristics more like the tall varieties. It grew quickly and kept tipping over so it has suffered a lot from dryness in the past few months. These three should take off…

Posting 6 palms growing in Puerto Rico daily? 1 2 3 4

So the governor of Puerto Rico has a very strict 24/7 curfew which leaves most of us confined with our plants until March 30 at least. I have not posted much recently so this is a good time to change that! I am starting near my house and I have the extra incentives to pull some weeds around each palm and use the photos also for a long overdue inventory. Remember that that almost everything was planted less than 2 years ago. Here's the first, one of my half dozen Cyrtostachys renda. These are easy and fast here and cheap when small. Not sure why the photos only look sharp when I click on them-sorry! Hat in the last photo gives scale.

Well it’s now been 4 years since I’ve planted out my new garden. Many palms are now photo-worthy, so I thought it is time to create a topic to document the growth. Firstly, a bit of an introduction to Melbourne’s climate: We have an odd temperate climate full of contradictions; we have the least sunshine hours of any Australian capital city, yet our summer sun can be brutal on a hot day. We have the highest recorded temperature 46.4C/115.5F (even hotter at my location nearly 20km south east of the city centre) of any Australian capital yet also the lowest (-2.8C/27F). Just a few of kms down the road from me (a couple of miles) is where the lowest temperature eve…

Frankston Palm Garden Victoria Australia 1 2 3

Hi, This is my first post on PalmTalk. I am a palm nut from southern Australia in the Melbourne suburb of Frankston. Frankston is next to a bay and I am about 1.5 km (1 mile) from the water. We have hot summers- at least a couple of days around 40 degrees C (104 F) but averaging high twenties (around 80 F). Coldest temperatures in winter is between 0 and 4 degrees C (32F-39F) but averaging around 8 degrees C (46F). The main limiting factor to growing tropical palms here is the low winter maximum daytime temperatures with average July maximums of 13degrees C (55F). My current residence is my first house (I am 28). Wanted to start early so that I might see my palm…
