Three New Sabals

I have an interest in mutant and/or dwarf Sabals. Yesterday I received three new Sabals I ordered from Plant Delights in NC: Sabal minors High Springs & Welfare & Sabal palmetto Mocksville. I was asked to post photos of my new acquisitions. Right now they all look like typical Sabal seedlings but I hope they will distinguish themselves in the future. Photo #1: Sabal palmetto Mocksville, left; Sabal minor High Springs, middle; Sabal minor Welfare, right 1) Sabal palmetto Mocksville from Mocksville NC. This plant is descended from a palm still living in Fayetteville, NC, that survived the brutal winter of 1984/85. My interest is not so much it…

Hi, I collected some Jubaea seeds recently and just right next to it there are several Butia and Syagrus. Can you tell from seeds if they are hybrids or not? The seeds kind of have this not perfectly round shape other Jubaea seeds had which I am growing.

Lipstick palm growth rate?
by RJ888- 3 replies
Being naive newbie, planted lots of redstick palms. About 2 meters (6.5 feet ) high. After 2 months of not seeing much, started looking for a growth rate and the only piece of info I found is 1 feet a year! It's quite shockingly slow! I wish I have looked up before planting. I have seen many tall mature plants around and did not think it's going to be an issue. What's the actual growth rate people see in humid tropics?? Rigth after planting and later on during first few years?

I just bought an 8' trunk height foxtail. It's a little too cold in the winter here and the fronds may burn in the summer. I have a nice shady place to put it but the fronds are already taller than the edge of the roof, they will be exposed to the sun while the trunk will be shaded. I know it's a gamble here but what the heck, if it lives it may be beautiful and the only thing like it for miles around.

I have 100s of 2 leaf seedlings that are growing under my saribus. I want to pot up a few to give them a chance. How will they do planting 3 or more in a pot, or am I asking for trouble when they grow larger ? I have seen Livistona chinensis grown in this fashion many times.

Queen seed question
by war_eagle- 3 replies
I ran by a local church today to grab some of their Sabal seeds when I noticed they also had a queen that was holding seeds. This tree made it through the cold last year so I figured it was worth a try. The seeds were still green, but I went ahead and picked a couple. Will these germinate or did I pick them too early? I plan to go back and grab some more when they turn orange later on, but was wondering if it was worth trying with these.

Trachycarpus princeps stone gate
by garrytsen- 3 replies
- 1.8k views
These princeps are grown from the seeds which we collected in the habitat of Stone Gate. People used to say blindly the they were green, but our results and some other growers' show they are even more beautiful than people have ever seen or thought. These T.princeps-stone gate as the only officially recognized source now seem to be the most bluish trachycaprus in its genus with white powder even on top as opposed to the green style of T.princeps merely with white coloration to the undersides of leaves. Don't confuse T.Nova formerly known as green princeps with the green style of T.princeps with green uppersides and white undersides of leaves.

Twins - Nature or Nurture?
by O'o Bar Master- 3 replies

Ive seen this phenomenon in a number of gardens . . . palms initially planted as virtual twins which then develop on a completely different time schedule. Both of the pictures below are of palms that were the same size when planted in our garden but which are developing very differently. Soil, water, sunlight and fertilizer were all the same for the two Calyptrocalyx but the palm on the right is easily twice the size of the palm on the left. In the case of the Latania the palm on the right was getting more shade until recently. Could the difference in sunlight be enough to cause the extreme difference in growth rates? Mike

Hello all:) My first post in a while, had a very busy summer and I just didn't have time to be online much...Anyway, I will be traveling to San Antonio from September 19-21, and I'm wondering if Washingtonia seeds will be ready by then...how do I know when they're "ripe?" I'm hoping to collect a ton and sow them this winter, so they'll be ready to sprout next spring...

? ID of this Areca?
by doranakandawatta- 3 replies

Two three years ago we were used to buy seedlings at the Peradeniya Botanic Garden shop (before we knew Palmtalk). and we got this: It would be funny if it is Areca concinna which is very spontaneous in the Morning garden. I hope it can be Areca triandra. (for those who know hoy to see the difference!) What do you think?

Driving down a familiar street in your own immediate town/neighbourhood, that you have lived in like forever, and suddenly notice a towering/healthy specimen a of palm you thought was very marginal in your local neck of the woods and there were not any mature ones around. So you think how the heck did I not notice that until now? That was the case for me with this Bangalow (assuming it's not a King). It's even taller and healthier now than this May 2018 streetview, I'll get a photo some time. Here it is a few months after the winter of 2009 which was coldest in 30 years. Saw -5C ( 23F) or close to it right in town and there was ice in shaded plac…

Dypsis id

Heard there were a few old names lurking around PT again and thought I might join in. I have this petite little Dypsis, still in a pot growing in filtered light, and now stands roughly 6 foot tall with a very slender trunk. As you can see it has grouped leaflets and does have some minor colouration to the new leaf. An interesting and perhaps defining characteristic are the small corky growths that form at the base of leaflets. A trait I have not seen present in any other species in the genus. Eager to hear your thoughts.

A neighbor here in southern CA didn't want these Caryota mitis so I dug them up hoping to revive them. What is causing the brown tips? Not enough water or too much salt in the water or? Here's some photos: http://img.photobucket.com/albums....010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums....011.jpg Thanks!

I got these two a couple years back and have been in the ground since... They're really healthy, green but I bet they wish they had some more sun... I picked up another C.elegans from MikeEvans in StPete, and have it out back in more sun... HurricaneMatthew didn't really help it....

Headed down south

I am leaving the panhandle in about two weeks to head to a family reunion in Jensen Beach, Huthinson Island area. Im interested in visiting a few tree farms while Im there. After doing some research the closest I can find is the Wholesale Tree Farm in Melbourne which according to Google Maps is about an hour and a half north of where Im going. Any closer locations would be appreciated. Im driving an f-150 down so im pretty excited about hopefully finding a few decent sized plants for less than they are trucked in here for. Im primarily interested in field grown plants as they will be cheaper. Thanks for any help. James
