Dr. Dransfield, an honorary research fellow and former head of palm research at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdon, is on a three week visit to the Hawaiian Islands to help identify and catalog palms at several major Hawaiian garden locations. Jim is one of the many people that originally contributed to building/planting, the Palm & Cycad Garden at FCCJ South Campus, in 1988. To all PSSC members: The Palm Society of Southern California has been the victim of a financial crime, which we first learned about after our meeting on September 20, 2014. Our investigation as to the full extent of losses is continuing and we will keep members updated as details become known. We are working with law enforcement to effect the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. We will not allow this to stop our publication of the Palm Journal or other work we do. We intend to move forward, however much the losses turn out to be. As always, we are and remain grateful for your support. David Bleistein, President

For those who don't know, Dent Smith was the founder of the International Palm Society and was the first to plant a large number of tropical palms that far north. And since this is the 50th anniversary of the IPS many chapters are visiting. While Dent was successful in growing palms Doris tells me that since his death hurricanes and hard freezes have reduced the numbers quite a bit. The South Florida Palm Society will be holding a general membership meeting on Monday evening, April 4, 7:30 pm at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables. Larry Noblick, Ph.D., Palm Biologist at Montgomery Botanical Center, will give a presentation on the genus Syagrus. This will be an updated and expanded version of his program on Syagrus which was well received at the 2010 Biennial Meeting of the International Palm Society.
