On July 20, 2024, the PSSC is having its July meeting at two gardens in Orange County: the gardens of Steven Velez in Westminster and Larry and Sue Black, in Fountain Valley. Both gardens are noteworthy for being great palm gardens on 1/6-acre suburban lots, yet each has been done with an opposite approach. And both are spectacular. If you have a small yard and want to see some serious possibilities, or even go wild with a larger yard, do come join us. Garden No. 1, the Steve Velez garden, is located at 15461 Devonshire Circle, Westminster, CA 92683. It’s a couple streets north of Mile Square Park. Steve inherited the house and garden from his father the late …

Hello Palm Friends! The Northern California Palm Society is planning on resuming activities and garden visits this summer. As COVID restrictions continue to decline, we are so looking forward to seeing our palm tree enthusiast friends. Our long-time Oakland Palmetum volunteers Darold Petty and Richard Quiroz are no longer involved with the palmetum. Richard has also stepped down from his role as the NCPS President. Their contributions to both the NCPS and the palmetum can not be measured. The palm collection itself exists largely due to their contributions. We have recently welcomed Will Abel to our NCPS team as Vice President. He has b…

by DoomsDave- 0 replies
Everyone, we are pleased to announce that the PSSC's meeting on May 17, 2025 will be in Seal Beach, Orange County, in two gardens, by the sea. One is older, the other is relatively new. The last time the older garden (Snyder's) hosted a PSSC meeting was in the 1990s, about 30 years ago. Garden No. 1: Home and garden of Kenny Lam, 4741 Ironwood Ave, Seal Beach, CA 90740. Mr. Lam has been growing palms at his current location for 13 years. Several of his beauties were planted in his early years there, after he replaced much of the native clay soil with a more grow-friendly mixture. On approach to his property, a blue Bismarckia nobilis and a "Silver Sword" …
