Palm trunk hole

I was transporting my majesty palm to another location when my finger sunk into a soft spot on the trunk, I scraped away all the loose stuff and left it to dry out, the hole was around the size and depth of a thumb. I’m not sure exactly what caused it, but my guess was because of the constant pooling of water due to having no air circulation and sunlight to evaporate the water left after watering it, as it was in the corner of my porch. Should I leave it the way it is or fill it in? Thanks!!

Hi everyone, Long time reader, first time poster here. I have some unhappy young queen palms, and I really hope someone can help me to save them. Twelve months ago, I planted four young queen palms in pots. They were a nice, rich green colour to start with, but they have steadily yellowed and now they all look quite sad. Although they have grown quite a bit, some of their branches are more yellow than green, and even the healthiest-looking ones are an uneven, mottled yellow-green colour. They also have brown spots and dead tips, which I have been trimming off. I have uploaded some pics. The pots are very exposed to sun in summer (December to March…

Hello, I have brown threads under the leaves of my Howea, grown indoors. The brown threads do not appear to be insects as there is no movement, nor any defined shape. Are these brown threads normal? The plant looks healthy otherwise. Thanks for your inputs. Best, Luka

Hi everyone, I inherited a palm that belonged to my grandparents and was wondering if someone could help me identify it. It's been in the same soil for over twenty years and was waterlogged, so it is hardy. The leaves may look different once it gets healthier. Thank you

We have had this flamethrower palm potted for about six months. It sits inside our lanai with filtered sunlight. It gets watered maybe three times a week. Not sure why the leaves are turning brown. Even the new growth is starting to turn brown may be too much water? Or sick?

I have about 6 Sabal Lisa seedlings that have split into two plants. I'm sure one will eventually die but was wondering if this is a normal thing for Sabal Lisa seedlings? They are also on track with the growth rate of being actual lisas. Got about 12 out of 50 seedlings with the Lisa growth rate right now. Thanks for any input.

Dypsis decaryi problem

I hope someone could help. I ordered this palm from the same place I got the last palm which was in good condition. Unfortunately, this time I was not happy. I received this palm 1 week ago. It traveled 5 days. It had slightly dried spots on the leaves. I watered and washed it because it was soil on the leaves. Since then, these brown spots have spread. I suspected a fungus (The other palm, which also came, has brown spots on the end leaves, picture of that on the bottom), so I just did a fungal treatment. I notice that it has a large potassium deficit and I already carefully gave a little potassium (I quess something 0,75-1 ml/l) in the first watering. I wonder if…

Outdoor Care tips for an archontophoenix
by amalou24- 2 replies

Hey I recently bought a beautiful palm tree from a nursery (labeled as Archontophoenix, though I’m unsure of the exact species), but I'm not very experienced with palm tree care. I live in Morocco, where the climate is quite dry, with humidity around 40-50%. However, the temperatures seem favorable for this type of plant: it never drops below 10°C/50°F, and in summer, it typically reaches around 30°C/86°F. I planted it in a pot that might be slightly oversized, but I wanted to give it room to grow. The soil is a mix of sand, potting mix, and compost (I plan to fertilize it regularly). IIt’s positioned in a spot that gets full sun almost all day. I also heard that i…

Areca potting soil mistake, Root Shock! Can I Re- Re- Pot this poor plant, in order to change the soil?

Ok, so I messed up. Transplanted my Areca today, in the correct size pot, big drainage holes, but put it in straight dry potting soil, Miracle Grow that had sat and dried for a year. Now, Fernando - my palms name- is in Root Shock?!? Browning tips, getting droopier..it was quite root bound when I transferred it to new pot, I did barely anything to the roots, pulled off a couple dead root tips... thinking the less I mess with it the less can be messed up. I retained the original growth medium, it was WET, put Fernando in dry potting soil, and only slightly watered, because the roots and the medium they came with were so damp already. Things are not good. Tips of leaves B…

Hello! I am a first time queen palm haver and they are not doing too well. I live in TN and keep these two queen palms indoors. When we got them, the root balls were like rocks and I had to use a saw to get them loose. They have been inside for maybe 3 months now and they are browning at the tips. I also trimmed a couple of their wings. I water once a week (not really sure how to explain how much I water them. Please help!

Variegated Washingtonia Needs help!!

Hiiii, I have quite a large variegated washingtonia palm, 2 in fact. Both were repotted into 30 gal containers from 15 gal late last year with a soil mix that I put together myself. If i can recall correctly it was a blend of Pine Bark Nuggets, perlite, sand, fox farm ocean forest... 2:1:2:4 One of the palms seems to be doing okay but could be doing better has only pushed about 4 leafs since winter and the other one has no longer put any new fronds out. It looks to be dead as there is no longer any green left anywhere. They both receive full sun and get watered atleast once a week. I am located in Houston zone 9a. I am a renter so planting into the ground is N…

Can you split a kentia palm?
by Vicky-W- 1 follower

Hello! 🙂 I’m UK-based and have a few indoor palms that I love. My favourite is my large kentia palm, which I picked up for free (yay!) after a wedding - they were shipped in as decor and then not wanted so it came home with me. It was repotted about 5 years ago, and has sat in the same spot for the past 3-years which it seems to like. However, the palm is starting to look a bit sad - lots of regular new growth but brown ends on the frond's of each palm. It’s watered every 2-weeks and given palm feed too. Any advice on why it’s going brown? I’m also looking to repot it and, for the first time, have noticed that it could actually be four palms that have been…

Growing tall Areca Palms in pots?
by FloridaKeysGrower- 6 replies
- 1.7k views
I want tall arecas with thick bamboo looking stalks. Am I on the right track here? I inherited these older Areca palms (7 years?) but they were neglected and extremely root bound. I started fertilizing them and got some green shoots. I repotted them, and cut 1/3 of it’s roots off and repotted in slightly larger container. I’ve started removing the smaller shoots. The idea is to help the palm focus on its larger shoots so that it can grow taller. I’m trying to form a canopy with these. Any other tips to grow tall areca palms in pots? I can’t seem to find any nice examples online. Definitely willing to increase pot size when the time comes, but is it a losing battle?

Advice on starting a Pygmy Date from seed
by Mike Palm Enthusiast- 1 follower

I decided to try to grow a few different date palms from seeds. I've been doing this on and off for years, but mostly with just seeds from dates from the supermarket. I had moderate success this summer with Canary Island Dates and Silver Dates, but really failed with Pygmy Dates. All had problems with fungus. The Pygmy Dates didn't show much fungus, but were obviously overwhelmed by it. Numerous Pygmy Dates seeds sent out a cotyledonary petiole only to die shortly afterwards. I used a different method of germination this year that obviously doesn't work for me. I used perlite in styrofoam with a cover and temperature 75-95 F. OMG, fungus! I transferred midway to…

Planting multiple seeds in one pot

One often sees Bamboo Palms ,Chinese Fan Palms etc planted in multiples of 5,10,20 and even more, and accepting that a little more watering and fertilizing for the first two years, they look attractive with all the extra foliage, but once they get to three years and more ,do you have to split them and risk losing some or do they happily contine growing albeit in a stunted fashion ?

To drain or not to drain
by BeyondTheGarden- 2 replies
I've had this P roebelinii for 4 years and repotted a handful of times. It currently has no drainage, as I know they are riparian palms that are virtually impossible to overwater. The lower fronds die off every time a new flush of spears open. But they also often exhibit this condition where half of the lowest frond(s) brown out. Never on the upper fronds. I originally thought it was sunburn, but may it be from having no drainage? Other than that it is very healthy and grows very well. Especially in the east coast heat and humidity.
