SoCal overnight lows

Hard to believe that one week ago my daytime high temp was 100f. Overnight lows the last two nights have been 38f and 39f. Double checked at my buddy's place a few miles away. And his temp at the top of the canyon was also 38f. Just wondering what others in the area are seeing for low temps now.

Florida is in a drought!

Almost all of the state of Florida is in a drought now. The drought is only getting worse as burn bans are put in place not long ago. My queens are doing fairly well but i have noticed a bit of yellowing lately on the tips. Likely from being so dry, i have tried to water it everyday but sometimes i cant. They are still trucking along though after a warmish winter for this area. How is your area doing? I do know that digging a hole is worthless here in the panhandle at this point. We need a good washout!

Cold Damage to Lipstick Palms
by Gregg L. Friedman MD- 2 replies

Does anyone have any ideas for helping a Lipstick Palm that has suffered from cold damage? My outdoor heater broke and my Lipstick Palm was exposed to a temperature of 41 Degrees Fahrenheit for several hours. It now shows some brown areas on the palm fronds which resemble burns. I appreciate any suggestions. By Gregg L. Friedman MD

Just walked out on the front porch. Its moving past chilly to cold. Its 48 on the way to a low of 44 degrees tonight. But the garden looks great, breathing a sigh of relief from the heat of summer. Too bad the cold won't stop here. First frost will change everything, and its only weeks away. Are you feeling the winds of change?

January 2014 is by far a record warm month in Modesto

As of today, our average Jan daily high has been 66f with a low a chilly 35f due to all the dry air. Some fun facts, Modesto's average high temp for Jan is normally only 54f.... so our high temp this year will be a record twelve degrees warmer than normal and a full 6 degrees above the next record warmest Jan. going back 100 years Then, going into Feb, Feb is always at least a quite a bit warmer than the month before, and our average Feb high temps are 62f Which is 4 degrees lower than the previous jan.... if the theory works We could see a first ever 70f average high for the month of Feb.... or at least 68f and warm over night. Crazy winter! Jefff

Well it looks like we've turned the corner again and had a very brief Spring. I have a chance of some rain tonight but after that it looks like warm to hot and no precipitation. I'm going to have to get the irrigation repaired this weekend.

Well I guess it's time to update the rain chart. We are still doing better than last year, but not by much. Nine months show more rain that last year. But...... I kind of like it like this. The weeds in the undeveloped areas are still under control. I can still afford my $175 a month water bill. Rain in Wai`anae Valley

Monsoon trough powering up
by Tyrone- 3 replies

The monsoon trough across the top end of OZ has reformed and gaining strength. With El Nino officially ended wetter conditions and more cyclones are favoured now. A tropical low is likely to form into a cyclone by tomorrow or Thursday off the Nth coast of QLD. Another low worth watching is in the Gulf of Carpentaria and another tropical low is expected to form and move off the coast of the Kimberley in North West WA by about Tuesday Wednesday next week. Hold on, this could get bumpy. Tyrone

La Nina Autumn 2020
by Tracy- 1 reply
La Nina patterns or cooler equatorial sea surface temps from the Central Pacific through to the Easter Tropical Pacific are occurring right now. These patterns often lead to dry and clear Autumn and Winter weather patterns here in Southern California where I live. The west coast just experienced a typical La Nina weather pattern last weekend with an inside slider storm coming down the coast with strong winds and leaving us now with cool dry nights and no marine layer. I hope that this isn't a sign of what is to come as we get deeper into Autumn and enter Winter. With clear skies, I bottomed out at 39 degrees last night, and even the weather station at Moonlight Beach …

Southern Europe, Autumn winds..
by John in Andalucia- 4 replies
After a warm start to Autumn, and a close return in recent weeks to Summer temperatures, the weather is about to turn much cooler next week for southern Europe. In our region at this time of year, we get an unsettling wind bringing intermittent gale and storm force gusts, for just brief moments, as cool air from the Atlantic collides with a permanent, warm air mass over North Africa, causing an updraft know as a "Leveche". To give you an idea of how erratic the consequences are, last night I was checking on the greenhouse, to see if my home-made heater was having any effect. The air temperature in the garden at 10.15pm was 14 Celsius and 16 Celsius inside the greenhou…

Lately I have been watching overnight lows that have consistently been at or near 70f start to move closer to 60f. It's bummed me out and I've been about to complain...then I remember what January was like. I suppose I will simply be thankful and enjoy the summer. It's amazing what a healthy dose of perspective can do to one's outlook. Happy summer all! ...in the North.

Global Climate Change & Palm Selection
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 4 replies

OK, I'm not wishing anything bad to happen to anyone, but IF I had the power to adjust my climate just a little, I'd put an end to those nights that drop just a smidgen below freezing. It seems that, except for the lows that occur about 2-10 nights per year, I could grow a Coconut palm in my yard (without protection). I just can't see how those 2-10 nights would have much of an impact on the Polar Bears (& I really want them to be around forever ). Of course my satisfaction would be short-lived because once I had that Coconut then I'd want the sligtly less cold tolerant Veitchias, then the much less cold tolerant Cyrtostachys & Piggies. Goodness, can a palm a…
