Almost that time again. A few very clear and calm nights coming up, no frost risk but if this was in 3 weeks time.... Palms had a great growing season, really getting sizeable now. Got less protection to do this winter as most palms are getting too big to protect now. Oldest current stalk of banana has just popped out the flower head now - not the best time, see what happens. Last year I was able to leave the bunch on right through winter, brief dips to -2C burnt leaves but didn't affect the bunch.

I discovered recently, for the first time in my life, that most of the Australian continent - despite being dry and arid - actually features neutral / acidic soils. As far as I knew, dry climates were nearly always alkaline and wet climates were almost always acid. Even in the <15" rainfall areas of Australia, there is limited alkalinity or salinity in the soil. Can someone explain this phenomenon to me like I am five?

I wrapped the base of my palms with blankets before the snow started. Temperatures might be as low as 13 degrees tonight for 2-3 hours. Does anyone have any tips or knowledge as to whether they will be okay? posting pics from last night when I wrapped versus today in the snow. We have gotten about 10 inches so far. love these palms and really hope they’ll be okay!!

I'm in East Mississippi now, about 10 miles or so from the Alabama line. Anyway, is it just me or are we getting a lot more rain, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes than normal this spring? I've been away from here for about 20 years, and I remember afternoon showers were common, but I don't remember getting so many severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings.

Hello everyone! Its been a long time since my last posts here and given that we now have more than 7 years of meteorological data from the area of Lindos in SE Rhodes in Greece, we can see some very interesting things according to the National Observatory of Athens fan aspirated meteorological station in Lindos. It appears that it is by far the warmest area annually in geographical Europe beating even the warmest areas of the Canaries islands (which are not located in Europe anyways). Below Lindos data the past 7 years that the station is operating. By achieving an amazing 21.89C mean annual temperature it beats even Tenerife South AP station in the Canari…

The first half of March is done and it has been VERY dry here. I have registered 0.8mm / 0.03 inches of rain so far this month, but many places have been even drier. Some places as little as 0.1mm / 0.003 inches. Temperatures have been a bit below average with some rather chilly nights due to all the clear skies, hence all the sunny dry weather this month... On the Environmental Agency network, there are multiple stations in Devon and Somerset that have only recorded 0.1mm / 0.003 inches of rain this month so far. Presumably that is the driest first half of a March on record for these places, since this area isn't even generally renowned as being a 'dry'…

Well it’s the southern spring equinox today, so the days are getting longer than the nights, overall temps are rising and things start to get growing again. It’s a time of weeding, watering and planting. There’s always much to do in a palm garden. For my area winter was a warm and dry event. Not anywhere near enough rain fell during winter and in a basically summer dry, winter wet climate, that’s an issue. However winter had no frost, and I had no cold damage whatsoever. Following up from a previous topic where we hypothesized than areas further inland and North of Sparta would have higher summer average maxes Well it appears that the National Observatory of Athens has been running a secondary Hydrometeorological station in the depths of the Evrotas Valley around 10 km North of Sparta the past 4 years. Well Kasos HNMS station reigns as its expected. Closely followed of course by Kastellorizo, Psari Forada, Rhodes Port and Gavdos (even though the mean abs. min in Gavdos should be considerably lower than the 6.33C presented on the table below since we don't have data from the epic 2022 and 2021 cold snaps). The data below come from official public stations in Greece and for their entire time series, with the exceptions of Kasos and Karpathos HNMS stations for which I used a full 30 year POR (data for Kasos HNMS available from 1989 and for Karpathos HNMS from 1990). I've been curious to look back at history to see how zones have changed in San Antonio going back to the beginning of consistent weather records (1886), using a 30-years of data to form an average lowest temperature for that period of time. The data indicates that San Antonio is not new to a barely 9A zone designation, but has waffled on one side of the 20F mark during that period of time. So 9A is not new, nor, as many people have stated numerous times on this forum, is it indicative of the ability to grow anything more tender in this area than it has been able to support in the past 135 years. A hard to believe temperature of 4 degrees F was reached at the Airport location this Wednesday morning. It dropped to 6 degrees in the city of Lafayette during the historic Arctic outbreak of 1899. An absolute minimum temperature record that stood for over 125 years was shattered today.

Models are appearing to converge on something like another extreme winter for even the southern states like Texas. As if we didn't have enough the past couple of years! 😭 If current models are correct, the worst should be around the 11th of January (at least for Texas). Although I hope it will all blow over or that it won't get as bad as '21, I am not taking chances. I'll slowly start preparing (I have a large yard with many precious young-ish palms so I can't have the "Oh I'll see what happens 2-days out" - attitude.
